A Message from the President
Jonah Rice, Ph. D.
President
Southeastern Illinois College
We here at Southeastern Illinois College live our mission every day. SIC
enhances lifelong learning by providing an array of higher educational
opportunities. Plus, the College keeps students from going into debt
by providing hundreds of scholarships, both public and private, as well
as keeping our tuition low. We offer cultural enrichment opportunities
and support economic development. All of this is done with great pride and praise. Our nursing scores are
in the top flight in Illinois. Transfer students find a larger university curriculum much easier than native
students do—and at a fraction of the cost. The diesel program is nationally recognized. Our competitive
teams, like forensics and archery as well as Model Illinois Government, are the best of the best. Theatre
and musical productions and the many service projects that our clubs and organizations, like Phi Theta
Kappa and Phi Beta Lambda, engage are top flight. Southeastern makes a huge difference in the lives
of so many in our area, and has done so for over 50 years. As we move into the next semi-centennial of
service, we plan on even greater things to come. Please take time to review this community report on your
community college and learn about what we do for you.
SIC Distinguished Alumna 2016
Dana Keating, Ph. D.
Vice President for Academic Affairs
Southeastern Illinois College
Dr. Dana Keating has been selected by members of the
Southeastern Illinois College Mu Psi Chapter of the Phi
Theta Kappa Honor Society to join Southeastern’s
Distinguished Alumni roster. Keating is the retired Vice
President for Academic and Student Affairs at Southeastern
Illinois College. She dedicated 38 years to the betterment
of Southeastern by holding many positions and being
involved in numerous grants, projects and programs.
A Harrisburg native, Keating earned her associate degree
from Southeastern in 1974. From there, she continued on
to Eastern Illinois University, where she earned a Bachelor
of Science Degree in Education in 1976.
“Attending Southeastern right after high school graduation
made great sense for me,” said Keating. “It was affordable
and just a 15 minute drive from home and allowed me to
save a great deal of money that I was able to later use when I
went on to Eastern Illinois University. I gained confidence
in my ability to be successful in college at Southeastern and
it provided a good transitional step from high school to a
university.”
Keating later attended Southern Illinois University and
obtained a Master of Science in Vocational Education
Studies in 1983, and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Higher
Education in 1996. Early in her career, she taught home
economics at Flora Junior High School.
“As a student at Southeastern, the college provided a
great first step to higher level degrees,” said Keating. “SIC
gave me a great foundation to build upon. It was a small,
friendly place where instructors cared about the success of
every student. The College has grown so much since I was
a student here, but it is still that type of institution – caring
and committed to students.”
During her tenure, Keating has been involved in most
areas of the college. Some of her positions have included
instructor, counselor, director of admissions and records,
registrar, dean
of instruction
and even interim
president for a
few months on the
way to her position as Vice President. She served on and
led several committees, been involved with professional
affiliations and assisted in the ICCB Recognition process.
She also served as the Accreditation Liaison Officer for SIC
with the Higher Learning Commission, SIC’s accrediting
agency.
Keating’s passion for higher education is evident in the
millions of dollars in grants that have made their way to
Southeastern with her help. Most recently, she led the grant
writing team in the Student Support Services TRIO Grant
that has been renewed for approximately $1.4 million over
five years. These grants have brought educational programs
to Southeastern, assisted in funding the development
of college services, helped fund needed equipment for
programs, such as a pediatric simulator for the Nursing
program, as well as employ faculty and staff for grant
activities.
“Simply put, I strongly believe that education opens the door
to opportunity,” said Keating. “Even a short certificate can
make the difference in someone’s job opportunities and level
of income for all their working years. Understanding and
experiencing the value of education results in encouraging
others to do the same.”
SIC President Dr. Jonah Rice said, Dr. Keating is the epitome
of the heart of Southeastern. She considers the student
perspective in all that she does, and she cares, I mean really
cares, for the college. She knows how valuable SIC is to the
community it serves.
“Dana represents all that is good about Southeastern. She
is an admirable colleague, a good friend, and a wonderful
choice for our distinguished alumna of the year.”
Building for Tomorrow
Brick Fundraiser for Tornado Memorial & Fountain Project
On Wednesday, Feb. 24, Southeastern Illinois
College held a memorial honoring the victims
of the 2012 Leap Day Tornado.
During the event, many representatives of SIC
spoke, including Brenna Butler, SIC Student
Government President, Dr. Pat York, SIC
Board of Trustees Chair and Dr. Jonah Rice,
SIC President, who also spoke on behalf of
the SIC Foundation. The SIC Concert Choir
performed Homeward Bound led by director,
Cory Garmane. The keynote speaker for the day was Patty Ferrell, mother of the youngest tornado victim, Jaylynn Ferrell,
a 2011 SIC nursing graduate and Registered Nurse at Harrisburg Medical Center.
Ferrell spoke of the strength of the community during and
after the devastation, as well as the remembrance of the
tornado and lives that were taken.
“We want to focus today and through the next week to
remember the lives that were lost, because although towns
and homes can be rebuilt, our lives have been forever
changed,” said Ferrell. “We need to keep living to honor
those we have lost, and ourselves. We need to treasure
every breath.”
This event also allowed SIC’s Student Government to kick
off a fundraising project, Building for Tomorrow to raise
money for a tornado memorial and fountain project.
“Since 2012, it has been Student Government’s desire
to have a permanent memorial on campus to honor the
victims,” said Butler. “We are honored to finally be able
to bring this memorial to fruition along with the fountain
project which has been in the works even longer.”
The memorial will include the names of the Leap Day
Tornado victims, while the existing fountain will be
resurfaced and given a fresh, new look.
This project is made possible by the fundraising efforts
of Student Government and support provided by the
SIC Foundation, and allows individuals to purchase
laser engraved bricks for installation on the fountain and
memorial. The project began in summer 2016 with hopes
of completion during the fall semester.
SIC’s Model Illinois Government Team
Wins Third Consecutive Championship
SIC clinched its record third consecutive MIG championship
in February 2016 marking its first three-peat in school
history when it was named Outstanding Small Delegation
at the simulation.
During competition, students have the opportunity to
debate bills in the actual House and Senate chambers in
Springfield. This year, more than 300 students competed
from 21 colleges and universities across the state.
Southeastern Illinois College led all small schools in total
points, leadership positions, and major awards. “What is
particularly impressive is that not only is SIC the smallest
school in terms of enrollment at the simulation, but the
team is the third smallest in number of competitors,” said
political science instructor and advisor Matt Lees. “To
score ten points with just six students is truly impressive.”
SIC Alumni Share Their
Experiences in Politics
SIC Alumni and former MIG award-winners Joe Debose (left)
and Jenny Pruitt (enter) came back to visit advisor Matt Lees
(right) and speak to students about their careers in political
science.
SIC students got an inside look into the world of politics
during the annual Constitution Week in Sept. 2015. SIC’s
Chair of Social Science Division, Matt Lees invited SIC
alumni Jenny Pruitt and Joe Debose, former Southeastern
Model Illinois Government award-winners, to speak to a
number of students of all different areas of study.
After SIC, Pruitt worked for Governor Rauner’s campaign
where she led all downstate staffers in voter contacts.
While working on the campaign, she impressed her peers
The SIC Model Illinois Government team won their division
at the state competition in Springfield for the third year in
a row. Pictured (l-r) are Stephanie Johns of Omaha, Tracy
Stokich of Galatia, Jenny Pruitt of Broughton, Advisor
Matt Lees, James Eversole of Norris City, Ryan Dennison of
so much that she earned a unanimous recommendation
to join Congressman John Shimkus’ staff. Pruitt currently
serves as a Congressional Aide where she deals with policy,
constituent service and runs Shimkus’ Harrisburg office.
After Debose left SIC, he started working as a political
consultant for The Eagle Forum. He has worked campaigns
across the country. He travelled to Nebraska to work on Ben
Sasse’s U.S. Senate race, then later went to South Carolina
where he worked on Governor Nikki Haley’s campaign and
worked for the South Carolina House caucus. Debose also
participated in Rick Snyder’s gubernatorial campaign in
Michigan and Terri Bryant’s primary campaign in Southern
Illinois. He currently works as a strategist and mid-west
director for political consulting firm, Trafalgar LLC.
Southeastern has a strong history of producing graduates
who continue on in the political science field.
“This small school has produced a senior member of
Speaker Madigan’s staff who later started her own lobbying
firm, three state representatives and a member of Congress,”
said Lees. “I am also proud to say this trend has continued
in recent years. SIC graduate Katie Pennell, is currently
working in Washington as a member of the Obama
administration, while another alumnus, Josh McClusky,
served as one of Governor Quinn’s field coordinators.”
Graves-Absher Scholarship
A new scholarship has been established with the
Southeastern Illinois College Foundation. This is an annual
gift valued at $40,000. The Graves-Absher Scholarship is
being given by Gordon and Linda (Absher) Graves who
both have strong feelings for the importance of a good
education.
“Gordon comes from a family of educators,” said Linda
Graves. “His grandparents, parents, two brothers, and his
four children have all taught. As for me, I retired after 30
years in education. I truly have a love for students and am
aware of the challenges they face today.”
A recipient will be chosen by an appointed committee at
Southeastern. Funds from this scholarship will pay for
tuition, fees, required course supplies, and books for a
Harrisburg High School or Carrier Mills-Stonefort High
School student with a minimum of a 3.0 grade point
average (GPA) who enrolls at SIC and upon graduation
then transfers to a regionally accredited senior institution
to complete a bachelor’s degree.
“We wanted to encourage local graduates to attend SIC,”
said Gordon Graves. “The community is fortunate to have
such a fine college.”
The recipient is required to maintain a 3.0 GPA and good
citizenship throughout the duration of the scholarship.
Upon graduation at SIC and acceptance into a senior
institution, the funds remaining after paid expenses at
Southeastern will then be distributed equally between
their junior and senior year paid directly to the senior
institution for tuition, fees, required course materials, and
books.
“Gordon and I want to help the community by offering an
opportunity to students who might not be able to go to
college or to students who would be saddled with a huge
Linda (Absher) and Gordon Graves established a new scholarship
with the Southeastern Illinois College Foundation to encourage
graduates to attend SIC.
debt after graduation,” said Linda Graves. “It is our hope
that the student who is awarded this scholarship realizes
that it takes hard work to achieve a dream, and hope the
winner is willing to put in the time and effort required to
complete their education.”
President of SIC, Dr. Jonah Rice said, “Southeastern
Illinois College is so very fortunate to have such a generous
gift as the Graves-Absher Scholarship. This type of giving
demonstrates a commitment from the donors to support
our local high school students at Harrisburg and Carrier
Mills-Stonefort High Schools, our local college, and
the region. This scholarship serves as an example that
beginning at Southeastern can lead to success at a four-year
institution with significant cost savings. It’s an investment
in the future for which we are forever grateful.”
SIC Nursing Programs Earn Top Rankings Again in 2015
Southeastern Illinois College’s nursing program has
exceeded expectations once again with superior pass rates
in both the Practical Nursing program (PN) and Associate
Degree in Nursing (ADN) program state pass rates for 2015.
SIC’s PN pass rate was tied for first place at 100 percent.
Average statewide pass rates for practical nursing was 88
percent. The national pass rate average was 82 percent.
The ADN pass rate was 92 percent, placing SIC in the top
quarter among all colleges in the State. The average state
pass rate was 86 percent. The national average was 85 percent.
SIC Foundation
The Southeastern Illinois College Foundation was formed
by the College’s Board of Trustees in November 1983 to
provide a means of raising and administering private funds
to support activities and programs at the College. The
Foundation promises strong stewardship of gifts and will
be prudent in the use of donations.
In 2015, the Foundation Audit reported more than $3
million in long-term investments alone that help many
students achieve their dreams.
Endowment Fund
The purpose of the
Endowment Fund is to
establish a guaranteed financial base from which interest
income can be drawn annually to help meet the evergrowing
educational needs of students, needs that cannot
be met with the traditional and limited financial resources
available to community colleges.
Foundation Increases Funding
for High Achiever Scholarship
The SIC Foundation has come together with Southeastern
to increase funding to the High Achiever Scholarship and
help ease the financial burden students face to receive higher
education.
The High Achiever Scholarship is an award for the top
academic performer at each of SIC’s in-district high schools.
Before, the High Achiever Scholarship was valued at $3,100
per year, divided equally between fall and spring semester.
Beginning with new recipients in the fall semester of 2016,
the scholarship will be increased to $3,600 per year, equaling
$1,800 per semester for tuition and fees.
This scholarship requires a 3.0 grade point average or higher
and is awarded by the high school guidance counselor. All
scholarship recipients must be continuously enrolled at SIC,
complete a minimum of 12 semester hours and maintain
excellent academic standing. The students also get to
participate in a service learning opportunity where they will
work to help others achieve their educational dreams.
Giving
Every gift makes a difference and enables us
to seize opportunities as they arise. There are
numerous types of gifts that can be made to the Southeastern
Illinois College Foundation and Alumni and Friends. Gifts
that are not restricted in use give SIC the flexibility to meet
current challenges and opportunities. Unrestricted gifts
can be the most valuable to the campus.
Possible gifts include:
• Cash
• Securities (stocks, bonds, and mutual fund shares)
• Personal Property or Equipment
• Real Property
• Insurance
students in attaining their
higher education goals. By
easing that financial burden
on our young people, we give
them that extra boost toward
finishing their degrees and becoming productive employees
and leaders of the community. We appreciate all those who
aid us in this endeavor.”
Alumni & Friends
The Southeastern Illinois College Alumni & Friends
Association was created to continue the relationship between
the College and its former students. There are three levels of
membership priced between $30 and $100, in addition to
a new lifetime membership priced at $1,000 ($200/year for
five years) that will be used to start building a new alumni
endowment. Benefits of membership in the Association vary
and range from discounts on events and bookstore items to
free season tickets for theatre productions, free athletic events
and free fitness center usage.
The SIC Alumni & Friends Association has established
a scholarship program that is open to all students with
preference given to children/legal wards of current
members of the Association.
“I chose SIC because it is close to home, and I just wasn’t ready to go away to
a big university yet. SIC has already done a lot for me – being able to take
college classes during high school was a big help to get a jump on college.”
“Scholarships allow me to focus on school without stressing about
the money … and that’s the important thing.”
Breakfast with Santa
Southeastern Illinois College held Breakfast with Santa on Saturday,
Dec. 5 in conjunction with SIC theatre’s musical production of A
Christmas Story.
Nearly 160 people enjoyed a pancake breakfast, story time, selfies
with a cute little Christmas dog (nicknamed Santa Paws for the day),
coloring time with “Santa’s helpers” and of course, pictures with the
jolly man himself.
Numerous clubs, sponsors and volunteers were involved with the success of Breakfast with Santa including Art, Math
and Science, Nursing, Phi Beta Lambda (business club), Phi Theta Kappa (honor society), Student Ambassadors, Student
Activities, Student Government, Theta Sigma Phi (theatre club) and Auxiliary Services. The nearly $800 raised will help
provide scholarships to area students.
“This event was fun for everyone involved,” said Melody Bryant, communications and relations specialist, and organizer
of the event. “I truly enjoyed watching SIC students, faculty and staff come together for the children of this area. It was an
absolute pleasure to see the joy on the children’s faces when it was their turn to see Santa. This event was a complete success.
What a wonderful way to get into the Christmas spirit!”
Plans are underway to offer this event to the community again next year.
Magician and Entertainer, Chris Egelston brought
children up as assistants during his magic show at Under
the Big Top children’s event at SIC.
Fun was had by all who attended Under the Big Top at Southeastern
Illinois College on Saturday, April 23 in conjunction with SIC theatre’s
production of Barnum: The Musical.
Over 100 people attended the event, which included entertainment by
magician Chris Egelston, a petting zoo by Joe Phillips, balloon animals,
face painting, games and prizes as well as cotton candy, popcorn and
many other tasty treats. Several volunteers even came dressed as clowns
lending even more of a circus feel to the event.
Numerous clubs, sponsors and volunteers were involved with the success
of Under the Big Top including Art, Circle K, Cosmetology, Math and
Science, Nursing, Phi Beta Lambda (business club), Student Ambassadors, Student Activities, Student Government, Theta
Sigma Phi (theatre club), SIC Auxiliary Services and SIC Environmental services. Carrier Mills United Methodist Church
allowed SIC to use their cotton candy machine, McKinley Avenue Baptist Church provided the elephant game, and Legence
Bank donated the popcorn.
“I was excited to see our SIC students enjoy making this a fun day for the children,” said Angie Wilson, marketing coordinator
and event co-coordinator. “The magician did a great job of getting the kids involved in the show, and Joe Philips brought out
some adorable baby animals that the kids just loved! He even brought out a tiny pony for the kids sit on, which was such a
great addition.”
