“I wouldn’t mind a few more hours in Hurricane,” Charlie answered. To her<br />

surprise, she realized it was true.<br />

John flashed her a quick, almost nervous smile.<br />

“Okay, then,” he said.<br />

“Let’s get out of there. Let’s go somewhere; anywhere,” Charlie said.<br />

When they were alone in the car John gave her a sideways glance.<br />

“So,” he said, “are we ever going to see each other after this?” He tried to say<br />

it lightly, but there was no way to lighten it. Charlie stared straight ahead.<br />

“Maybe,” she said. She could not look <strong>at</strong> him. It wasn’t the answer he wanted,<br />

she knew th<strong>at</strong>, but she could not give him wh<strong>at</strong> he wanted. Wh<strong>at</strong> could she say by way of<br />

explan<strong>at</strong>ion? It’s not you, it’s the weight we both bear, it’s too much. When you are<br />

here, I can’t ignore it. She did not look <strong>at</strong> him.<br />

But something in her thoughts felt off, not quite right, as if she were speaking by<br />

rote, thinking off a script. It was like flinching instinctively to protect an injury, before<br />

remembering it has healed. She looked <strong>at</strong> John beside her. He was staring through the<br />

windshield, his jaw set.<br />

“I have somewhere I need to go,” she said abruptly, and made a slow U-turn.<br />

She had never gone to visit the place, but now, without warning, her mind was<br />

consumed by it. Aunt Jen had never suggested it, Charlie had never asked. She knew<br />

where it was, though, and now she headed there with a singular sense of purpose: I need<br />

to see.<br />
