Furniture materials Acacia The Acacia tree, also known as the Mimosa tree, is a fast-growing and hardy tree. This wood has the same properties as teak wood. During acclimatisation, small hairline cracks can emerge. This type of wood is also used to manufacture outdoor furniture items. Maintenance indoor: Damp cloth. Maintenance outdoor: Mild soapy water. High-pressure cleaning is not recommended. Alder wood Alder wood is used in furniture manufacturing, and the wood chips of this North-American timber are used to smoke salmon. This timber is extremely stable and is therefore mainly used in the manufacture of side cabinets and cupboards. Maintenance: Damp cloth. Aluminium All aluminium parts and furniture items are made from recycled aluminium sourced from aircrafts, cars, cans of food and a range of other everyday objects. Aluminium can be reprocessed and reformed endlessly. Maintenance: Dry cloth. Ash wood Ash is a hard, heavy, ring porous hardwood and belongs to the Olive family. It has a prominent grain that resembles oak, and a white to light brown color. When finished with natural varnish the texture of the grains will be more visible. Maintenance: Damp cloth. Beech wood This European specie has mostly a pale cream colour and has very fine grains. This wood is mainly used in frames, a variety of bent and turned parts in Club chairs and Sofa’s. Maintenance: No, as it is used inside furniture. Cotton Cotton is a natural fibre that originates from the cotton plant and is the most commonly used fibre. This material is strong and long-wearing, and is not subject to piling. Colour variations are nearly invisible. Glass Single-paned glass is used in cabinets, and is also referred to as ‘float’ glass because of the continuous nature of the production process. Float glass is produced by melting the raw materials sand, lime and sodium carbonate at high temperatures. Toughened glass is used in tables and other furniture, and is also known as tempered or safety glass. The glass obtains these properties after being heated until the glass becomes liquid, after which it is immediately rapidly cooled (‘supercooling’). When tempered glass breaks, it does not produce the large glass shards one sees with normal glass, but instead, it falls apart into small granular chunks that cannot cause injuries as easily. Maintenance: Mild soapy water. Linen This fabric is made from flax, which is obtained from plant fibres which undergo a special treatment process. The flax is first bleached before being mixed with other threads. The use of natural materials will result in a visible colour nuance, and less wrinkling of the fabric. Linen fabrics may pile in time. Maintenance: Dry clean. Mahogany This extremely durable and hardy wood type has an even reddishbrown colour. This is used in the frames of rattan chairs. Maintenance: Dry cloth. Mango wood This hardwood is extracted from the mango fruit tree in plantations in India. Once the tree stops producing fruit, it is cut down and the wood is incorporated in furniture as table tops. The application of a translucent finish brings out the fine qualities of the wood structure and colours. Maintenance: Damp cloth. Oak wood The White Oak variant is extremely strong and is used in the manufacture of table tops and cupboard doors. It is light in colour and has a striking grain. Maintenance: Dry cloth.
