PRIMARY STAGES HAS BEEN SHARING THE ART
OF PLAYWRITING FOR OVER THREE DECADES
by producing over 130 critically acclaimed
productions. We further support the art of
playwriting by providing artistic and financial
resources to playwrights through commissions,
readings, and workshops. Over the course of our
history, Primary Stages has commissioned 20
new works, which have gone on to be produced
on our stage and by other theater companies
across the country.

For over 20 years, our FREE
STUDENT MATINEES PROGRAM
has provided NYC public high
schools with access to high-quality
professional theater. Following
each matinee, the cast returns to
the stage to participate in a talkback
session with the students.
Our playwrights often participate
in these talkbacks as well, giving
students the unique opportunity to
interact with the author of the play
As a continuation of the company’s
investment in the audiences of
the future, we created TIXTEEN, a
ticketing initiative enabling all NYC
middle and high-school students
attend Primary Stages production
free of charge.
The FORDHAM/PRIMARY STAGES MFA IN PLAYWRITING offers
writers the opportunity to develop and produce their work
in a rigorous university setting while fostering relationships
with Primary Stages. This two-year program provides two full
productions with professional directors, networking in the New
York industry, plus guidance from a broad range of professionals
in theater, television, and film.
