Flame Retardant | Class 2 Vests - Aware Wear
ANSI/ISEA 107-2010
Flame Resistant vs. Flame Retardant
Flame Resistant apparel are garments which are tested and meet various industry standards that require
self-extinguishment of the garment after exposure to flames, sparks and more. Garments labeled under the ANSI 107-2015
Standard shall state that flame retardant garments do not provide fire protection.
Flame Retardant is a chemical used to treat materials for self-extinguishment which may or may not meet any accepted
industry standards. Caution: Logos applied to Flame Retardant treated fabrics may decrease the effectiveness of the garment’s
flame retardant properties.
ANSI/ISEA 107-2010 uses the term Flame Resistance for high visibility garments which fully meet one or more of the following
standards:
-ASTM F-1506 -NFPA 1971
-ASTM F-1891 -NFPA 1977
-ASTM F-2302 -NFPA 2112
-ATSM F-2733
WARNING: Purchasing a vest requires careful selection to ascertain if the garment will protect a worker from sources of heat
or ignition that may be present in the work zone. Some commercially available garments listed as FR treated may not give
the level of protection called for by the ANSI/ISEA standard, and may not last for more than one wear/wash cycle, nor may all
components have flame resistant properties even if the label states that it meets ANSI/ISEA 107. The label must indicate one of
the foregoing ASTM or NFPA standards to be considered Flame Resistant under the ANSI/ISEA 107 standard.
ERB Safety ANSI 107 2015 Update – Labeling changes are underway on all Aware Wear Flame Resistant and Flame
Retardant vests. All flame resistant vests meet the performance criteria of ANSI/ISEA 107-2015 except for required labeling.
