WATCHING BBC iPLAYER?
YOU NOW NEED A TV LICENCE
If you’re a fan of EastEnders or the Great British Bakeoff,
then watching an episode online is about to get a whole
load more costly. It’s now illegal to use the BBC iPlayer
catch-up service without paying for a TV licence – but are
you prepared?
Before September, it was perfectly legal to watch anything
on BBC iPlayer on your laptop or smartphone without a
license – in fact, you only needed a TV license to watch
live television.
Now, in a bid to generate additional income for the
BBC, the TV Licensing authority has closed the loophole,
meaning anybody who chooses to access content from
iPlayer demand will be expected to have a TV licence, which
currently costs £145.50 per year.
Anybody who uses the service without a license will be
breaking the law, and could risk prosecution and even a
fine of up to £1,000 – expensive for a single episode of
Top Gear!
Although the Government’s report suggested that the TV
Licensing authority adopted a verification method – such as
Classroom Strategies KS1/2/3
A group intervention - inference training
Professional development for staff
Improving reading comprehension
and enjoyment - a training resource
for primary and secondary schools.
issuing passwords or individual accounts for every licence
payer – TV Licensing says that it will continue to follow the
enforcement methods it used previously.
This means that you could receive a letter or even a visit
from an enquiry officer if you are believed to have been
watching television without a license.
Some people – such as the blind, the elderly and those
with black and white televisions - are eligible for a free or
discounted licence, but the vast majority are still expected
to pay.
Although the new enforcement is likely to raise further
questions, everything you already knew about the TV Licence
remains. You’ll still need to pay if you want to watch or
record any live TV on any channel, regardless of the device
you are using. If you want to find out more about what
the change means for you, visit tvlicensing.co.uk/iplayerinfo.
2016 edition
Inference training was evaluated by
Professor Greg Brooks in 2007, 2013 and
2016 and found it offered significant gains in
reading comprehension.
“The importance of based practice in education
is receiving increased recognition. Inference
Training has a firm grounding in both the
research into reading comprehension. The
programme provides sound and innovative
ways to support children’s reading
comprehension and teaches them strategies
that can be applied not only in literacy lessons,
but across the curriculum.”
