From haunted houses to fright hikes,
this issue is all about celebrating Halloween.
I have a tendency to skip Halloween and
just celebrate fall in
general. There are several
reasons for that.
#1: The seasons pass
too quickly for me to
decorate for both, so
I do pumpkins and
colorful leaves, not
jack-o-lanterns and
witches.
#2: Having candy in
the house is a temptation
I can do without.
My husband and I

were in the grocery store over the weekend
and paused for a moment in front of the
bags of Halloween candy. Looking at each
other and remembering that we get very few
trick-or-treaters, we passed on the candy. He
and I would have been the ones eating it,
not the little princesses and super heroes.
#3. I hate to be scared. I don’t like haunted
houses, and horror movies terrify me. I
naively went to the theatre for “Silence of
the Lambs” 20-plus years ago and I’ve never
recovered. I am also extremely easy to scare
— walk up behind me and if I don’t hear
you coming I will literally jump. My kids
and husband can all vouch for me on that
one.
There are lots of things I love about this
time of year, though. The brilliant colors
of the leaves. The crispness in the air. The
smell of harvest. The color of the moon.
Making soups, stew and chili. And pumpkins.
I came across a recipe last night that combines
them both — pumpkin soup with

Party featuring Farm Rock
Band is set for Saturday, Oct. 29,

help everyone get in the Halloween
mood.

Rolling Oaks to host Boo Bash
Halloween means many
things to many people.
Candy. Costumes. A few
good scares. The falling leaves
and changing colors of autumn.
And, of course, several
events to commemorate all of
the above.
The newly renovated Rolling
Oaks Barn is stepping into the
Halloween fun with its inaugural
Boo Bash at the Barn.
The children’s Halloween
party will be held Thursday,
Oct. 27, from 5-6:30 p.m. at
the barn on the hill in Spirit
Lake.
It’s a free family event and
area businesses are invited to
set up with activities, candy
and prizes for everyone who
attends.
“It should be really fun, we’re
encouraging everyone to come
in costumes and for the kids to
bring their trick-or-treat pails,”
said Jen Johnson-Ross, owner
of Farm Girl Social Media Management.
Of the businesses already
signed up to help provide some
Halloween fun, Johnson-Ross
mentioned Creative Spirits will
hold a painting class for $10
while Ingvall Real Estate Team,
Liberty National Bank, Good
Samaritan Society, Pizza Ranch
and Kurio Kastle are also ready
to host activities and hand out
candy.
Businesses still interested in
joining the fun need only contact
Johnson-Ross or Rolling
Oaks Barn to sign up.
Businesses with cars or trucks
decked out in their signage are
also encourage to set up for
trick-or-trunk if they want.
“I mean who doesn’t love
Halloween?” Johnson-Ross
said. “This will be a fun event
and in a barn that is a century
old. What they’ve done there
has been spectacular. People
have a lot of curiosity about it
and some area kids have probably
never been in a barn.”
What better place is there
for a Halloween event than a
century-old barn?
That’s what the folks at Rolling
Oaks thought and the Boo
Bash is something they hope
becomes an annual event for
everyone.
“It’s such a beautiful location
and perfect for Halloween, so
why not have a bash for the
kids?” Johnson-Ross said. F

Candy is a major part of Halloween.
In fact, Rock Valley has
named their Halloween celebration
in its honor. Once again this year,
they’ll be hosting their annual Candy
in the Valley event.
Downtown Rock Valley will become
a Halloween paradise for kids and
their families on Friday, Oct. 28, from
around 3:30-5:30 p.m.
Candy in the Valley is an event that
has been going on for a number of
years and is always a treat for both the
families who come to the event and
for the businesses who participate.
“All the downtown businesses will
have tables or booths set out where
kids can come and get their candy and
there will be sales going on so moms
and dads can do a little shopping,”
said Adam Rosman, the Rock Valley

Chamber Director. “We also have one
of the streets closed off and the chamber
will have pumpkins available for
painting.”
In addition to having the one street
closed off for painting pumpkins, the
main street running through downtown
is also closed off so that the kids
who come to collect candy don’t have
to worry about traffic.
The businesses that are downtown
will hand out candy, and, in addition,
other Rock Valley businesses will also
make their way to downtown to set up
more tables or booths.
That way they can be a part of trickor-treat
event.
This is Rosman’s first year with the
Rock Valley Chamber and he is very
excited about experiencing his inaugural
Candy in the Valley event.
“I’m excited that the community
can come out and see downtown and
the growth,” Rosman said.
“We’re going to celebrate the youth
and the energy that you see when
families come out together to enjoy
some cost-efficient fun.” F

Sheldon to
host annual
Halloween
event Oct. 29
Daylight is diminishing as darkness
slowly seizes control of the day.
There’s a touch of fall in
the air, a sense of the changing of
the seasons. Leafs briefly turn bright
before fading and meandering to the
ground in a spiral of death. Tree limbs
grow skeletal, casting bony shadows.
Halloween is approaching. Are you
in the spirit?
The second annual Prairie Arts Historical
Park Halloween Carnival can
help you find your inner spook. The
October fright and fun fest is set for
1-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29.
The spooktacular event will be held
at the park, located between Casey’s
General Store and Shopko Hometown
on Highway 18 (Park Street).
Admission is free. Popcorn and hot
chocolate will be sold at a concession
stand.
“Last year we had the honor and
pleasure of having 300-plus children
partake in our Halloween fun,” said
Prairie Arts Historical Park Board
member Karin Vanden Berg.
“Again we are asking for donations
to make this year even bigger and
better than last year,” she said. “We
would like to add a kids’ Ferris wheel
this year, and hopefully a petting zoo
for the kids.”
Donations are needed to purchase
prizes and cover other expenses. The
carnival raised $600 last year in just a
few weeks but has set its sights higher.
Volunteers are needed to set up, tear
down and help during the carnival.
Last year, Sheldon mayor Katricia
Meendering, who also is a park board
member as well as Vanden Berg’s
daughter, donned a costume and read
kids’ fortunes.
“Let us know you want to be a part
of making this another great event for
the kids,” Vanden Berg said. “The more
volunteers there are, the easier it is.” F

Rock Rapids to host Halloween Parade
At a Glance:
On Halloween Day in downtown
Rock Rapids there will be a sight
to see.
Ghosts and goblins, pumpkins and
princesses will be on parade.
Rock Rapids will once again be
hosting its annual Halloween Parade
on Monday, Oct. 31, at 4 p.m. Kids of
all ages from all over N’West Iowa are
invited to come to Rock Rapids and
participate in this fun tradition.
The fun starts in the Sunshine
Foods parking lot at 4 p.m. and then
the parade of costumed little kiddies
heads east down First Avenue and
then crosses to the other side of the
street and comes back to the parking
lot where it started.
Parents are invited to come along
for the parade to watch their kids,
help them cross streets and gather
candy.
Businesses will have people to hand
out candy outside their doors. And they
have to have a lot of candy on hand.
“We usually have about 600 kids
and we have kids of all ages. We don’t
have an age range,” said Angie Jager,
the director of the Rock Rapids Chamber
of Commerce.
She’s been doing this job since 2007
and the chamber has been putting

Jager’s not sure on how long exactly,
but she knows it’s a long-standing
tradition.
Jager has been watching kids get all
dressed up in their Halloween costumes
for the Halloween Parade every
year and every year she’s excited to see
all the different costumes.
“Seeing the kids in their costumes
is my favorite part. I love seeing what
the popular costume would be that
particular year,” Jager said. “The past
couple of years we’ve had a lot of ‘Frozen’
characters. Lots of Annas, Elsas,
and Olafs. I don’t know what we’ll
see this year, but I’m excited to see the
kids dressed up again.” F

Hike full of
Fright
Estherville to host hike through Fort Defiance State Park
Halloween is the one time of the
year when people are looking to
be scared just for the fun of it.
The Estherville Chamber of Commerce
has got you covered.
For the fourth year, they’ll be hosting
their Fright Hike through Fort
Defiance State Park on Saturday, Oct.
29, from 6-9:30 p.m.
“The Fright Hike is a half-mile
haunted hike through Fort Defiance
State Park, and it’s a little more special
than your average run-of-the-mill
haunted house,” said Lexie Ruter, the
executive director of the Estherville
Chamber of Commerce. “The setting
is in the woods so it’s already a little
scary and then we add even more
scary.”
According to Ruter, they add the
scary in a lot of different ways from
the scenes they set to the costumes the
volunteers wear and the sounds hikers
will hear.
“We do different little stations like
a cemetery and we built a tunnel that
you have to go through. We have characters
running around scaring people,
some of whom will be carrying chainsaws,”
Ruter said. “We don’t have to
build the surrounding, because we’re
in the woods and that’s a good base
there, but we add music, lights, people
and sets.”
They do all of this, build the scenes
and get all dressed up, for just one
night of fun. As for the scary characters,
this year, due to recent events,
there won’t be any clowns.
“We’ve had some concerns in the
area about the crazy clown situation
so we just want to let people know
that we won’t have any clowns at this
event,” Ruter said. “We have police
reserves who will be monitoring the
entire event, so people should feel like
this is still a safe event.”
The Fright Hike takes about 40
volunteers to run and the event has
continued to grow in popularity since
it first got it’s start. Last year, they had
750 people go through the Fright
Hike.
“The first year we had 500 people
come out. We were hoping for 100,”
Ruter said with a laugh. “It was crazy
and we’re just so excited that it is continuing
to grow.”
Because they serve such a big
number of people and they prefer to
have participants go through in small
groups, they have added one more
hour to this year’s Fright Hike.
“We decided to start at 6 this year
instead of 7 p.m. And we’re promoting
it as a great hour for kids who
want to be scared, but maybe not really
scared,” Ruter said. “It’s still kind
of dusk and not completely dark so it
might be great and easier for some of
the smaller kids.”
But it’s not always the smallest kid
who has the loudest scream, according
to Ruter.
“I think it’s really kind of fun to see
different people’s reaction to being
scared. You might see a seven-year-old
girl and jump out at her and it won’t
even phase her, but her 12-year-old
brother might jump out of his skin,”
Ruter said.
People are encouraged to dress
warmly as it is fall and the temperatures
tend to get downright chilly in
the evening after dark.
If there is bad weather then the
event will be moved to the next night,

Fort Defiance:
Fort Defiance State Park is
named for the fort that once
stood in the nearby community
of Estherville. In the mid-19th
century there was considerable
concern among the settlers about
the possibility of attacks by hostiles.
In March of 1857, forty men, women
and children were massacred
near Spirit Lake and Okoboji. In
1862, a wounded 15-year old boy
stumbled into town with the story
of an Indian massacre in Jackson,
MN. This brought terror into
the community and Captain W.H.
Ingham and Company A of the
Northern Border Brigade were dispatched
to Estherville to construct
Fort Defiance. The townspeople
eventually moved into the enclosure
but the feared Indian attack never
came. Over time, the fort was taken
apart and the timbers used to build
cabins.

Downtown businesses break out the candy
Costumed kids will have plenty
of opportunity to collect candy
this Halloween in Hartley.
The annual Halloween Spectacular
on Oct. 31 features a trick-or-trunk
event and tour through downtown as
well as citywide trick-or-treating.
It all starts at the fire station at 3:30
p.m. when everyone will gather before
heading out to visit the downtown
businesses.
Those who own businesses off Central
Avenue can partcipate as well and
are encouraged to set up in the parking
lot for a trick-or-trunk portion of
the evening.
“As a chamber we’re always looking
for ways to get people into businesses
and the owners themselves really
enjoy seeing all the kids dressed up
in their costumes,” Trisha Pearson, a
chamber board member and supervisor
of the Halloween event, said. “Not
everyone realizes what we have downtown
and this is a great opportunity to
walk downtown and see everything.”
As the group moves its way around
downtown, business owners will be
set up outside to greet everyone and
hand out candy.
It is the third year that Halloween
has had this particular format in
Hartley and it has proved quite popular.
After completing their circuit of
downtown, families and their little
ghosts, princesses and superheroes
can continue to trick-or-treat throughout
their neighborhoods until 8 p.m.
It’s not just the young ones that
enjoy the evening though as Pearson
said many of the business owners that
get involved will dress the part as well.
New this year will be events hosted
at St. Paul Lutheran Church just north
of downtown. There will be a bouncy
house set up as well as hot cocoa and
apple cider served from 3-5:30 p.m.
Some congregation members will
have a trick-or-trunk set up outside
as well with church-related trinkets as
well as candy to hand out.
“It’s a great, fun, family event. We
start with the sun still out and everyone
had a good time visiting and
seeing all the different costumes,”
Pearson said. F

Spencer Jaycees build Terrors of the Night haunted house
Hundreds of thousands of visitors
walked through the Clay County
Fairgrounds last month. Many
probably spent some time in the Industrial
Building, but none of them
saw it quite like this.
For the third year in a row the Spencer
Jaycees will be transforming the
space into a haunted house of horrors.
“Nightmare at the Fair: Terrors of
the Night” will be open Oct. 21-22
and Oct. 28-29 from 8 p.m. until midnight
and on Halloween from 7-10
p.m. Admission costs $10 per person
or $7 with two non-perishable, nonexpired
canned food items.
All proceeds benefit the Spencer
Jaycees’ Tree of Joy program, which
provides presents for families in need
at Christmas.
The food items will be donated to
the Upper Des Moines Opportunity,
Inc. food bank.
“We’ve been hard at work for
awhile,” Spencer Jaycees president
Jason Jacobs said. “We get started
almost right after the fair. There is a
great group of Jaycees and volunteers
to help build and make this happen
and Midwestern Mechanical helped
out with forklifts and trailers. We’re
really thankful because without all
their help we couldn’t get the haunted
house ready.”
Jacobs noted that a grant from Clay
County Tourism helped with the expenses
of lumber, supplies and props
and expressed his thanks for the many
people willing to help set up as well
as work on the nights giving people
a good fright as they make their way
through the Nightmare at the Fair,
which has a few new frights around its
corners this year.
Jacobs didn’t want to give away
too much, but did let on that will be
some new rooms and at least a couple
surprises for haunted house visitors
this year, as well as a few staples that
people look forward to seeing every
year.
“Several hundred, if not thousands,
of people come through the haunted
house each year,” Jacobs said. “It’s really
a quality haunted house and one
of the last true ones in the area. It’s
not uncommon to see people sporting
gear from 9 or 10 different school
districts.”
Some of the hundreds who visit
this year will be a bit younger as the
Spencer Jaycees try out something for
the first time.
“We’re fortunate to have the YMCA
working with us and on Wednesday,
Oct. 26, kids get out of school early,
so we’ll be hosting a toned-down version
with lights on for children about
third-grade and up,” Jacobs said.
That’s part of what the Spencer
Jaycees are all about as they raise
funds and give back to community
children’s programs every year. The
haunted house is one of many vehicles
that allow the Jaycees to do so.
“It’s a serious production and quite
a unique experience. I think the
tradition is a big draw as well since
it’s been going on for a long time,”
Jacobs said. “There will be quite a
few different characters going on this
time and I’m looking forward to it.
Those working the haunted house really
enjoy themselves and have a lot
of fun with it.”

in the ’80s
as a children’s
theatre company in
Vancouver. But a few

Pioneer Village
