Page 6 Feature Where is the best place to eat lunch at West? by Maya Williamson Shaffer photos by Ella Kunstman At 11:57, the bell marks the end of 4th hour, and the beginning of a mad rush of students pouring out of their classrooms for their favorite period of the day: lunch. West High School has clubs, classrooms, and an open campus, which means lots of different choices of how to spend your lunch. A variety of students spoke about their favorite way to spend lunch- hopefully this can help you find the perfect way to spend yours. Sage and her group of freshman friends sit on 1st floor Ash. She said they usually spend their lunches on the first floor, but many of them wished they ate someone else with “more sunlight and people”. Next, is the cafenasium- busy but not overly crowded, and with dimmed lights. Zach, a senior, says he usually eats there to meet with friends and do some homework. General take on the first floor? Not too crowded, but not a lot of natural light. Maybe a better spot in the winter. Next, to the 2nd floor and the Van Hise wing, where senior Leonie eats with her friends. She says they “sometimes” eat there, but also like to go to teachers’ rooms, or outside on a nice day, or to clubs. But she noted that they were “a lot better at going to clubs as freshmen.” Overall thoughts about the 2nd floor? The Ash entrance is definitely an acquired taste- it’s usually pretty busy and can get a little hectic- while the Van Hise wing is a little more subdued, but still has the Students eat and socialize on the Ash Street steps. same sort of energy. The next stop was up in the third floor where senior Anna and her friends usually eat. They like it because it’s “pretty quiet, not to crowded, and has a clearer hallway.” She says they sometimes go to clubs, but they don’t like to do homework because “it makes lunch less fun.” Junior Kira was eating in a bio room. She said the bio room or the orchestra room are her go-to spots, mostly because friends she doesn’t otherwise see during the day meet there- and also, “the snake in the bio room is cool.” While she eats, she gets ready for her next class, or just hangs with friends. Overall, the third floor was quieter, and definitely a better place to get work done. The last stop inside the school was the fourth floor physics room, where freshman Simone and her friends from various grades were eating. She eats in the physics room to hang out with “cool people who aren’t in her classes.” Technically, it’s sheepshead club, so they do play some sheepshead. Simone says it’s “really chill and pretty fun.” The next stop is one of the most popular places to eat when the weather’s nice. Will and his group of freshman continued on page 7 Seniors cont. from on page 3 making the most difference at West, because I’m finally getting involved in school activities. That’s something I’d definitely recommend to future seniors; gear up, get involved, and you’ll have a great year.” Jackson also gave advice for next year’s seniors: “One minute you’re a freshman and you feel like you’ll be stuck in high school for the rest of your life, and the next you’re a senior and you’re terrified to leave! You’ve definitely got to make the most of senior year, and have fun Page 7 Feature with it.” After a moment’s pause, she added, “... but also, get your work done.” Overall, college pressure and sadness about leaving a familiar place behind combines with the excitement of new independence and a live in the moment outlook to create senior experiences that are unique to each individual. “Your senior year could be awful... or fantastic,” Livorni said, near to the end of his interview. “The hope is that you take whatever you learn from it with you out of West High School, to expand your outlook and apply it to your future.” GREENBUSH BAKERY KOSHER DONUTS Kosher Certified Dairy Lunch cont. from on page 5 friends were on the Ash steps. He likes eating out on Ash because it’s pretty close to his classes, it’s outside, and from the Ash steps you get the “West View.” Moira and her sophomore friends sit outside along the edge of the building. With music playing in the background, she told me they “sit there when the weather’s nice “so that she doesn’t have to sit on wet grass, and because she gets a “nice view of everything going on.” Sometimes she studies for test during lunch, but mostly, she just “chills.” She comments that “Ash can be a good spot to chill when the weather’s nice, but it can sometime get a little too crowded, and not a great environment to get work done.” Overall, there seems to be a place to eat for everyone to eat at West, whether they like to spend time with friends, do homework, or just take the time to relax.
