This 1951 illustration for a Plymouth automobile
advertisement went through a number of
variations before finally appearing as pictured.
Commercial art, in many cases, did not give
Rockwell complete creative dimension as he was
often presented with ideas drafted by advertising
agencies and asked to illustrate them.
This light and humorous piece could be found in a 1923 issue of Literary Digest. The image was
promoting Valspar varnish with the line, “Valspar is Hallowe’en Proof.” The varnish might protect the
wood from all that water but the man’s vest is another story!
Images by Rockwell would be featured
25 different times in Ladies’ Home
Journal. This warm and nostalgic oil
piece depicting a young woman admiring
her dress in the mirror was included in
issue number 15 in May, 1927.
One of Rockwell’s many commercial pieces, this image debuted in the Saturday Evening Post in February,
1923 endorsing Romance Chocolates. It is considered one of the earliest examples of “lifestyle advertising”
depicting a sophisticated young couple enticing each other with chocolate.
Christmas must’ve been a particularly special
time of the year for Norman Rockwell as few
artists have captured the spirit of it so well. This
watercolor painting was originally produced for
Hallmark in 1952, but would go on to appear on the
December, 1955 cover of Child’s Life magazine.
Published on March 31, 1923, this was the
44th piece by Rockwell featured on the cover
of Literary Digest. Incidentally, it would
also be one of his last for the publication,
possibly because of the heavy demand for
his work from Saturday Evening Post.
This oil painting, which appeared on the
May 27, 1922 cover of Literary Digest,
makes allusion to seamstress Betsy Ross
who sewed the first American flag. The bird
cage above her head and the soldier’s hat
on the table rouse thoughts of the struggle
for freedom which the flag represents.
This chilling oil painting, alternatively titled
“Fifteen Below Zero,” graced the January
17, 1920 cover of Literary Digest magazine.
Rockwell portrays an icy shock on the face of
a rosy-cheeked man when he realizes just how
frigid the temperature is.
In 1921, this image appeared on the
Literary Digest cover the Saturday after
Thanksgiving. It depicts a couple with
plenty to be thankful for after receiving
a crate full of turkey and trimmings from
Aunt Mary and Uncle Bob.
This oil on canvas image was one of
Rockwell’s later works appearing on
the 1972 cover of the Top Value Stamps
catalogue. The image was honed with a
series of pencil illustrations to capture
a special moment between mother
and daughter.
One of the most iconic paintings from his
“Sporting Boys” series featuring the same
four boys. Here they appear to be more
engaged in argument than sport after a
particularly intense game of basketball.
The work originally appeared in the 1951
Four Seasons calendar.
Alternatively titled, “Shadows on the Wall,” this 1922 image promoted Edison Mazda
lamps. It beautifully ties together the warm lighting with the warm bond between
grandfather and grandchildren.
