FOR THE HUMANS
The concept of being present is a
strange one. How many times per
day are you simultaneously juggling
multiple tasks at once? When was
the last time you can remember just
doing one thing and focusing all of
your attention on it? Take a moment
to gain a sense of awareness in your
life. Where is your body? Is it in the
same place as your mind?
Most of us are distracted by
something almost always, whether
it is our multiple social media pages
or the huge pile of laundry sitting
at home. Our minds drift off, they
need to be constantly entertained
or distracted from reality, letting
boredom or anxiety take us away
from the moment. But what is wrong
with the present? The present is the
moment you are in right now, yet we
are always trying to save it for later,
or worse, for somebody else.
Watching the sunset after a long day,
THERE IS AN INVISIBLE
SENSE OF VALIDATION
THAT WE CRAVE
FROM OTHERS
you find yourself in this moment
and think “what a beautiful life I
have”. However, there is something
in us that wants to remove us from
that and snap a photo for all to see.
It is no longer your moment, for it
has passed, and all you have is a low
resolution photo. You post this photo
online and the “likes” start swirling
around you. “My friends like me,”
you think. However, you knew they
liked you before your social media
post, didn’t you? There is an invisible
sense of validation that we crave from
others. Our self-esteem fluctuates due
to this new drug called, “likes,” and
our constant need to serve others.
What happens when the attention
stops coming your way and your
self-worth plummets to an all time
low? You look in the mirror and feel
overweight, sad, ugly, lonely, and
worthless. The negativity comes at
you to the point where you can’t take
it anymore. What you do not know
OUR SELF ESTEEM
FLUCTUATES DUE TO THIS
NEW DRUG CALLED “LIKES”
is that you are not your thoughts.
Just because you think something
about yourself does not mean that it
is true. These thoughts are what keep
us from reaching our full potential.
Is it then you decide that change
must happen in your life? You think
to yourself, “I want to grow! I want
to learn! I want to be me again.”
Your spirit is strong and willing,
but your flesh is weak. It is easy to
say you will be better, but to do is a
commitment to yourself that takes
time and discipline. Change seems
so fun, it’s a new beginning. What
you do not realize is true growth is
not always an easy route. You wake
up the next morning thinking you
are a new person. You see a homeless
person on the street and give them
a dollar;, you’re a new person now
so you strike up a conversation with
them. They tell you about their
hardships and your true self feels for
this person, so you buy them a meal.
At the end of the encounter, you ask
to take a photo with them and post
it on social media with a sweet little
caption about what happened. The
moment is no longer yours. People
begin to like and comment like crazy,
“you are so nice” “so giving,” “so
understanding.” Your self validation
returns and you think, “I don’t know
what I was tripping about,” and the
cycle goes on.
Now is the time to commit and show
up for yourself every day. Open up
to your inner self that does what they
want regardless of the approval of
their friends or family. This is where
you will find purpose and presence.
Believe in yourself, ruthlessly and
fearlessly, and your validation will
be clear.
