A global Perspective An interview with Edward R. Raupp, Ph.D. Adjunct Faculty, Economics, Great Bay Community College There are many things that Edward Raupp does well. He understands global economics and world politics, and is able to explain complicated economic ideas in ways that are easy to understand. One thing he doesn’t do well is retire. By his count, Raupp, 79, has failed at retirement four times. He’s currently teaching economics at Great Bay Community College as an adjunct professor. “I don’t want to retire. I want to do something,” said Raupp. He served in the Peace Corps in Gori, Georgia, teaching English and economics at Gori State University from 2003 to 2006, and decided to stay. He assumed he would be sent to Africa, based on his prior educational work in East Africa. His assignment to Eastern Europe was an unexpected and welcome surprise, allowing him to see a part of the world that was new to him. “I signed up for two years but stayed for 10,” he said. He uses his personal experiences in all aspects of his life to teach the class. By making the material relatable to his real -world stories, he hopes to elevate economics from a discussion about complicated theories to one about how the world works, and why changes in global markets and politics affect people in New Hampshire. A retired colonel in the U.S. Army, Raupp spent 20 years in the military, serving as a paratrooper in Vietnam and later in the Office of the Secretary of Defense at the Pentagon. When he retired from the military, he went to work first as a manager for Westinghouse Electric Corp. in Iowa and later for a variety of technology companies in Minnesota. He also worked as executive director of a local humane society. He became involved in post-secondary education at Augsburg College in Minneapolis in 1989 where he vowed to teach a class that was neither boring nor irrelevant. He followed an education career across the Midwest, eventually as a full-time associate professor at Waldorf College in Forest City, Iowa. While at Waldorf, he began an international recruiting program, and was founder and director of the East Africa Studies Institute and helped Waldorf establish a Tanzania campus. After all of that, he volunteered for the Peace Corps, moving across the world to teach at the university level. Along the way, Raupp selfpublished six books, including the new third edition of “A Brief Dictionary of Economic Terms,” which he uses in his classes at Great Bay. He’s also written two novels and two collections of poetry. One book of poetry led directly to his marriage to Danna, who accompanies Raupp in the classroom at Great Bay as his assistant Raupp is thrilled to be teaching at Great Bay. He loves the academic environment, and enjoys sharing his experiences and expertise with his students. “It’s a great school, and the students are engaged. It’s exactly what I want to do,” he said.
