Making the most of existing
road capacity through realtime
and predictive decision
support
Hosted by PTV
Unplanned events and incidents are a
major cause of delays and poor journey
time reliability on road networks.
Although today’s traffic control centres
have tools to monitor traffic conditions
and observe the impact of incidents
in real-time, explaining the cause of
traffic conditions or predicting how
incidents will affect them in the future
is not a common feature. A realtime
and predictive system can help
evaluate and select the most beneficial
measures and interventions to mitigate
the impact of incidents, reduce delays
and increase journey time reliability.
Predicted traffic information can be
provided to the users of the road
network in real-time via smartphone
applications or in-car navigation
systems, leading to an optimised
distribution of demand and utilisation
of existing capacity within the road
network.
Delivering technology-led
solutions in the real world
Hosted by Costain
The session offers a range of different
perspectives on the challenges of
integrating innovative technologybased
solutions into mainstream and
large-scale highways services provision,
whether that be on the SRN or Local
Authorities network.
Programme and International
Collaboration, Highways England
Air Quality: The urgent need
to mitigate transport impacts
on health
Hosted by TRL
The UK is facing a growing air quality
problem with several cities already
breaching safe air pollutions limits,
with transport still a major part of the
problem. Sources suggest that ambient
air pollution could be contributing to as
many as 40,000 UK deaths annually,
20 times more than fatalities caused
by road crashes. TRL will consider
the future economic, societal and
environmental impacts of our activities
to change the air quality outlook, in
order to stimulate a debate on a broad
range of issues surrounding air quality
and explore some of the interventions
needed to make a difference.
Dr Helen Viner, Infrastructure Division,
Chief Scientist, TRL
Professor Nick Reed, Director, TRL
Adding value to highways
operations through the
integration of space
capabilities
Hosted by ESA IAP UK Ambassador
Platform
The prospects for growth in the
intelligent mobility market go beyond
the traditional transport sector and
will require the utilisation of emerging
technologies. In this context, spaceenabled
services can contribute to
the creation of a mobile society that
is safe, efficient, environmentally
sustainable and well informed. The
European Space Agency (ESA) ARTES
programme engages with customers,
service providers and integrators in
both the transport and space domains
through its Integrated Applications
Promotion (IAP) programme. It seeks
to identify where the integration of
space capabilities can deliver benefit
and helps develop new services or
improve existing ones. In this session
a selection of highways-related ESA
IAP projects will highlight how satellite
enabled services add value and help
address operational challenges. ESA
IAP will also outline opportunities for
new projects.
Innovations: new apps, new
sensors and new services...
Hosted by EY-Seren
Thinking of the customary road user as
a customer throws up a wide range of
ideas and future change. Responses
vary across industries, as does the
pace of change. Mobility as a service
is one common response mainly
from incumbent transport providers,
IT and the car industry are looking to
autonomous cars as their option. Where
are the needs of genuine customers in
this space? How do we discover these
needs, what data can we best use to
model? Gavin Bell, client director with
EY-Seren outlines the new apps, new
sensors and new services needed to
make the best use of our road network
for the future.
Speakers
Gavin Bell, client director, EY-Seren
Autonomous Vehicles and
Making Better Places
Hosted by WSP|Parsons Brinckerhoff
& Farrells
Autonomous vehicles will be
transformational. They have the
potential to support a better quality of
life, economics growth, health, safety
and social connections. They could
also help to improve the way that
our existing places and routes work,
while offering new potential for more
valuable land, and additional homes
and jobs. This session updates recent
work undertaken by WSP|Parsons
Brinckerhoff and Farrells who have
built on leading-edge research into
connected and autonomous vehicles to
explore new thinking and ideas.
Speakers
Rachel Skinner, director, WSP|Parsons
Brinckerhoff
The Big Data Revolution -
what does is mean for the
future of our highways?
Hosted by Arcadis
Big Data is changing the way we
operate the transport network and
how we estimate demand on it. This
change brings huge challenges for the
profession which require the intellectual
capabilities of the leading data
scientists and technology specialists
to solve. The session will explore the
opportunities and limitations of using
Big Data, which is derived from an
increasing array of sources, to plan
the development and operation of
our future highways. Equally we will
reflect on the potential influence,
brought about by the data revolution,
on design specifications for our future
infrastructure needs.
Speakers
Olga Feldman, big data and land use
analytics director, Arcadis
David Threlfall, innovative highways
technology director, Arcadis
