A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
DR. ALFRED ALLISON ROBERTS
Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC)
serves the largest community college jurisdiction
within the Commonwealth of Virginia. Its reach
spans ten counties and the city of Emporia. Students
receive instruction at seven different physical sites,
including two main campus locations and five learning
centers. In addition, distance learning opportunities
give students the option of taking classes in an online
environment.
The college also meets the needs of students on many
distinct education paths. During the past academic year,
our students earned 1,319 degrees and certificates, 900
industry-recognized licenses and certifications, and
2,277 career readiness certificates. Their achievements
represent a vast array of individual milestones and goals.
Yet, even with this diversity, the word community stands in the center of our name and at the heart
of our mission. Today, the word community refers to people who share something in common,
such as where they live or some other characteristic. The Oxford English Dictionary reports that the
twelfth century Anglo-Norman and Middle French roots of the word community carried the meaning
of joint ownership. By seeking to reinforce that original, underlying sense of a common possession
and a shared purpose, a community strengthens the bonds that link members one to another. Each
individual may represent a single thread, but together they weave a magnificent tapestry.
The word community also encompasses the word unity, that is, the quality of being undivided, of
being one in thoughts and actions. At Southside Virginia Community College, our strategic plan,
titled “One College. One Mission,” emphasizes the unity of focus we bring to the task of fulfilling the
needs of people in our region. At the heart of our mission is the job of providing quality academic
and workforce services, helping to propel economic vitality across our jurisdiction, and bringing
individual prosperity to its residents. Our dedicated personnel work on behalf of learners to provide
student-centered support services to ensure success, and they reach out to businesses and others
to bolster the connections needed to attain mutual goals.
SVCC is committed to the task of knitting together the fabric of Southside Virginia to make it a
place where unity of purpose strengthens our bonds and prepares our community for the future.
