nominated several very strong candidates for consideration. At
the time of this writing, there has not been a formal announcement
of who will be on the ballot.
In-Training Section
The In-Training Section has planned a variety of attractive,
educational and informative activities for the 46th Critical Care
Congress in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA.
The Section session, “My Biggest Concerns on My First ICU
Job!” will be an interactive panel featuring Daniel R. Brown,
MD, PhD, FCCM, from the Mayo Clinic; Piyush Mathur, MD,
from the Cleveland Clinic; and Utpal S. Bhalala, MD, FAAP,
from Baylor College of Medicine at Children’s Hospital of
San Antonio. These experts will discuss mentorship, efficient
documentation and billing and running effective multidisciplinary
rounds in the ICU. The session will be moderated by Ashish K.
Khanna, MD, FCCP, and Vinay M. Nadkarni, MD, FCCM.
In addition, the Section will lead a live debate station in the
exhibit hall. These talk show-like stations will feature the “who’s
who” of critical care from the world over. In addition, the usual
Section business meeting, Steering Committee meeting and a
planned meet-and-greet will be organized.
The Section continues to publish actively in Critical Connections.
The June/July 2016 issue featured “A Critical Care Mission to
India” based on Dr. Khanna’s recent trip to India to promote best
practices in that part of the world.
We are always seeking talented people to work with us to better
serve the Society and its mission. Please contact the In-training
Section Chair, Ashish Khanna khannaa@ccf.org for more details.
Nursing Section
The Nursing Section has been meeting regularly since
Congress 2016 in Orlando! Our conference call meetings have
included not only the Steering Committee but also the leadership
of the Nursing Section committees and subcommittees. By
meeting regularly, the Section has been able to have an ongoing
dialogue with open communication that flows from our leadership
to the members.
Currently, we are working on several projects. First, after the
successful implementation of the Shark Bait competition at
the Society of Critical Care Medicine’s (SCCM) 2016 Critical
Care Congress, we will once again host Shark Bait at the 2017
Congress. This event allows Nursing Section members to present
their research, quality or education projects to a panel of experts
and compete for a prize.
Second, SCCM is working on finalizing a Memorandum of
Understanding (MOU) with the American Association of Critical-
Care Nurses and the National Association of Clinical Nurse
Specialists. Under this MOU, a white paper will be written and
published on the role of the clinical nurse specialist in critical care.
Last and most importantly, the Nursing Section is reevaluating
its strategic plan to enhance the Section’s membership and
activities.
Research Section
The Research Section continues to grow in both membership
and fulfillment of its mission. To highlight this, we would like
to draw attention to our working subcommittees that complete
and disseminate much of the Section’s important work.
This month, we recognize the Quality and Patient Safety
Subcommittee, which is an interprofessional work group with
representatives from both adult and pediatric critical care units
and long-term acute care hospitals. The proposed charge for this
subcommittee includes: 1) generating an agenda for healthcare
quality and patient safety related to critical illness and injury, 2)
proposing topics for the Roadmap for Discovery/Work Group
Program at the Society of Critical Care Medicine’s (SCCM)
Critical Care Congress, 3) developing and submitting proposals
for Congress, and 4) reporting on subcommittee initiatives,
achievements and proposals to the Research Section Steering
Committee and to the membership during the Section business
meeting.
Proposed projects for this upcoming year include developing
a white paper on the future of quality and patient safety in the
ICU, developing proposals for the 2018 Congress, and facilitating
discussions surrounding the utility and feasibility of creating
webcasts focused on quality and patient safety.
We are interested in recruiting all members of the interprofessional
ICU to this vibrant and developing subcommittee that is
committed to improving the lives of critically ill patients, their
families and healthcare providers.
Surgery Section
The Surgery Section is seeking to connect with a broader
group of like-minded surgical intensivists. We believe this organization
provides a venue for networking, education and advancement
that is unique among all national surgical organizations. For
new fellows, we host an annual Jeopardy-style competition and
are also proposing a Society-wide competition to include multiple
sections. Fellows enjoy complimentary membership in SCCM.
We are also developing a mentor program to connect fellows and
junior faculty with senior Society members.
Efforts to broaden educational opportunities include colocating
an American College of Surgeons Advanced Surgical
Skills for Exposure in Trauma course during the Annual Critical
Care Congress and the development of a new surgical procedures
course for surgeons, nurse practitioners and physician assistants.
The Section is actively engaged in patient safety awareness and
sponsors the very popular Surgery Year-in-Review session. Our
Section also promotes advancement within the Section and the
Society through committee work and support of applications
for Fellow of the American College of Critical Care Medicine
(FCCM) or Master of Critical Care Medicine (MCCM).
We encourage fellows, surgeons and their clinical support staff
to participate in the Section and help shape the future of surgical
critical care. Please contact either Surgery Section President
Addison May (addison.may@Vanderbilt.edu) or Membership
Committee Chair Salman Ahmad (ahmadsa@health.missouri.
edu) for more information.
