DISORDERS
Depression
A depressive disorder is an illness that involves
the body, mood, and thoughts. It interferes with
daily life, normal functioning, and causes pain for
both the person with the disorder and those who
care about him or her. A depressive disorder is
not the same as a passing blue mood. It is not a
sign of personal weakness or a condition that can
be willed or wished away. People with a
depressive illness cannot merely "pull
themselves together" and get better. Without
treatment, symptoms can last for weeks, months,
or years.
Depression is a common but serious illness, and most people who
experience it need treatment to get better. Appropriate treatment,
however, can help most people who suffer from depression.
Depressed people accidentally start to push away people who seek to
help them by not being able to take part in most activities or not
wanting to meet up with their friends. They start to give up on their
social life as they believe that it will not fix their mood and make them
happy, eventually giving up on their closest friends and family. Most
depressed people are forced to put on a mask everyday they go to
school or work in order to interact with other people in their daily life.
They could be seen laughing and having fun but are still depressed as
they feel very sad from the inside. Depression is a very serious mental
illness because if not treated, it could lead to suicide.
