Hopedale High Students Push
Financial Fitness
Stop by this Hopedale Jr. Sr.
High School classroom and what
you find may surprise you. A
student posting financial literacy
tips and information on Twitter
and writing press releases for the
paper. One student revamping a
whole fair to accommodate twice
the students. Another student creating
a website and surveying staff
members on financial advice for
today’s teens. And a fourth covering
the high school in advertisements.
And the list goes on.
Hopedale Jr. Sr. High School
business teacher and DECA advisor,
Talitha Oliveri, encourages
innovative efforts that get
students involved in the learning
process. The driving force for this
teacher is to enhance the financial
literacy knowledge of the entire
school so they are better equipped
to sustain their adult lives. When
the opportunity to apply for a
Credit for Life Fair grant arose,
she immediately applied. Receiving
a $2,500 grant has helped to
renew the potential for another
great fair after the success of last
year.
The Hopedale Jr. Sr. High
School DECA program, a student
organization that prepares emerging
leaders and entrepreneurs in
marketing, finance, hospitality and
management, is organizing a Financial
Literacy Fair. The mission
of Hopedale’s “Financial Fitness
Fair” is to educate the teens and
community about the importance
of financial literacy and money
management. The “FinFit4life”
Fair is being held on December
15th at the Draper Gymnasium
in Hopedale from 8am to 12pm.
About 160 Hopedale Jr.- Sr. High
seniors and juniors will participate
in the event with over 30 volunteers
manning booths and offering
financial advice.
For the Financial Fitness Fair,
students will apply their knowledge
in a fun, interactive, and
educational environment in an
effort to maintain and manage
their funds. At the fair, students
will visit human resources, choose
their bank account, create and
balance a budget, receive and
utilize credit scores, and make all
major expenditure decisions that
an adult in their mid-20’s will face.
Prior to the fair a training managed
by seniors Cameron Smith,
Gerry Crepeau, and Mitchell
Siefring will be held for all members
of both the senior and junior
classes to review the purpose and
logistics of the fair, proper business
attire and interpersonal skills
necessary for successful employment.
Students will take a survey
for preferred career choices, fill
out job applications, and submit
resumes to prepare for the career
they will be assigned at the fair.
“I truly believe that if students
are financially literate, they can
change their lives. With the help
of four dedicated seniors (Cameron
Smith, Gerry Crepeau,
Katherine Pino and Mitchell Siefring),
the training and event are
going to be a fantastic hands-on
learning event for both the Class
of 2017 and 2018,” stated Mrs.
Oliveri. “The FinFit4life Fair is
an event that will shape their future
views on finances and money
management. I can’t think of a
better way to inspire future generations.”
STATE CHAMPS
continued from page 1
Championship, finished 13 th
with a time of 16:55 and David
Wollensak was right behind him
at 16:57 good enough for 15 th
place. As in the past the Blue
Raiders ran in a pack mentality
and was able to have three
consecutive runners cross the
line; this time it was Jake Murray
(17:20 for 31 st place), Bryce
Brown (17:21for 32 nd ) and Andrew
Doran (17:22 for 33 rd ).
About a minute behind the
Hopedale pack was Colin Black
with a time of 18:10 and Christian
De Boer at 18:23.
The Blue Raiders went
14-1 to capture the Dual Valley
Championship for the tenth
time in the last 12 years. The
squad then went on to win its
seventh straight and 10 of the
last 11, Division 2 Central Mass
Titles.
“It’s half coaching and half
their involvement; starting
them at a younger age by the
time they get to this level the
athletes have already bought
into the program and are ready
to go. A lot of them will go
onto run in college,” Drugan
said. “It’s a great feeling when
a small school can take on the
bigger schools and win. I am
very proud of these boys, as is
the school and the community.
Their parents did a great job
with them.”
In the Division 2 Central
Mass Cross Country
Championship Hall took first
place with a time of 16:34,
13 seconds ahead of Narragansett’s
Michael Capps. Wollensak(17:05),
Doran(17:08)
and Murray(17:16) ran the
pack formation taking 8 th , 9 th
and 10 th , while De Boer (17:28)
finished 14 th , Brown(17:38) 16 th
and Black(17:44) 19 th . Hopedale
accumulated 49 points, 59
points better than second place
finisher Oakmont, who had 108
points.
While the Hopedale boy’s
cross country success has been
impressive over the last decade,
the future looks even brighter
for the Blue Raiders. In addition
to the varsity team capturing
the DVC, the Division 2
Central Mass and the the State
Championships, the schools junior
varsity sqaud was also able
to capture the DVC Title while
the the middle school team
went undefeated on the year.
