In this edition we celebrate ‘Mothers in Business’. We have
interviews with inspirational SN members who have established
successful businesses whilst juggling children and school runs.
How do they make it work and what advice can they give to you
as aspiring entrepreneurs? Jane Lunnon (Head of Wimbledon
High) gives her view on the all-important life lessons needed to
achieve future success in the workplace (page 7).
Jamie Oliver gives us a sneek preview from his eagerly awaited
new Christmas cookbook (page 16) and we announce the
worthy winners of our hotly contested poetry competition (page
32). Thank you to everyone who entered - the response was
overwhelming and the talent exceptional. Congratulations to
Lucy Hartley and her charitable ride for Allegra’s Ambition –
find out how she got on (page 34).

‘LEANING IN’ FROM AN EARLY AGE

“What would you do if you
weren’t afraid?” So says Sheryl
Sandberg in her best-selling
book, ‘Lean In’. It’s a sentiment
that in a girls’ school we cannot
emphasise enough. Championing
risk-taking, getting stuck in, and
picking yourself up from any
failures along the way, are all
vital in preparing our students
for the world of work beyond the
classroom – keys for building the
resilience that young women will need as they
adapt to a changing workplace, strike out in
business and make a success of their lives and
careers.
Thus, we have run a number of initiatives,
such as ‘fail better week’, which made a splash
precisely because of that use of the ‘f’ word. For
careers-specific events, it’s never too early to
start young girls thinking about their futures,
introducing them to inspirational women
who can talk about what they have achieved
and the hurdles they have faced. Monica

Alongside all this, we should all be giving
children the space and time to find out where
their passions lie: whether on the sports field,
in a coding club or learning to play a beautiful
piece of music. This will feed into their success
and hopefully we will one day soon get to the
stage where, as Sheryl Sandberg describes: “In
the future, there will be no female leaders.
There will just be leaders.”

Tell us about your business, when
did you set it up and why?
We set up School Trunk to help
not only parents, but also schools
to manage the challenges of storing
students’ excess belongings over
the holidays. More and more stuff
seems to find its way into students’
rooms and schools no longer want
to store it all over the holidays
as the pressure on schools to rent out their
facilities increases. Schools want the rooms
cleared and students often can’t take all their
belongings home with them.
School Trunk provides a collection, storage
and re-delivery service, either en-masse to
schools such as Cheltenham Ladies’ College
and Rugby or individually to students at any
school in the UK. We will even clean, mend
and name tape uniform!
Balancing work with kids – how do you
juggle it?
The juggle is always difficult and in fact the
beginning and end of terms are even more

helped us understand the market in
a way that many other people can’t!
What are the highs and lows of
running your own business?
Running your own business is
a true rollercoaster of emotions.
The highs are higher, but the lows
are harder to deal with. The true
benefit though is that you are able to manage
the work/life balance in your own way.
What advice would you give to other mums
thinking about a start-up?
Everything always takes longer than you
think and you have to ensure you can step
back regularly and re-evaluate your strategy
to ensure you are working as efficiently and
effectively as possible.

INTERVIEW WITH COLT SHOES
Tell us about your business, when
did you set it up and why?
We set up Colt Shoes in 2014.
Having found it hard to find plain,
good quality school shoes for our
own boys, (particularly as we both
lived rurally), we thought we would
have a look at what we could source
ourselves. After trips to trade fairs
in Europe, we put together a small
collection and have expanded from there. We
now have girls shoes and have branched out
into weekend and holiday shoes.
Balancing work with kids – how do you
juggle it?
As many working mums find, it is hard! This
was one of the reasons that we started our
own business, as we can work around the
kids. With smartphones and tablets we do a
lot of our work at times and places that suit
us and we are not restricted to conventional
office hours. This doesn’t always work though,
especially at our busiest time at the end of the
summer holidays. However, with two of us we
make sure we are not away at the same time.
It also helps that our children are friends, so
a lot of the time we have meetings over lunch
whilst our children are busy chatting too!

What are the highs and lows of
running your own business?
It has been a huge high to see the
business grow in the last two years
knowing that we are in charge of
our own destiny and it has been a
big boost to our self esteem. It is
a real pleasure now to see people
coming back to us and getting the
next size up every year for their
children. The lows are that in these first
years, as we build up the business, we can’t
pay ourselves much of a salary. It can also be
lonely working from home by yourself.
What advice would you give to other mums
thinking about a start-up?
Boring though it sounds our advice would
probably be to do as much research as you
can before venturing into a new business and
to stick to something you know a bit about
and enjoy. Having said all that, if you have
an idea, go for it. You can spend a lot of time
thinking of the ifs and buts, but nothing beats
the reality of getting out and doing it - roll up
your sleeves and give it a shot!

Tell us about your business, when
did you set it up and why?
Kate and I are Sussex based, great
friends and mothers of two girls
in the same year at Brambletye
School. We set up the The Grey Earl a
year ago to give people the option to choose
delicious, fresh, homemade food at outdoor
public or private events, which we serve from
an iconic 1956 Citroen H van. Alongside a
desire to push our own individual boundaries,
our different skills and work ethic has
combined to create a business that has allowed
us to share incredible highs and thankfully,
few lows.
Balancing work with kids – how do you
juggle it?
By picking and choosing the events we attend
so The Grey Earl is busier during term time
than holidays and doing our preparation
while the children are at school or after they
have gone to bed. Also thankfully, Kate and
I have very supporting husbands. They are
an essential and integral part of making this
business work. They have a whole range of

own business?
Being able to share this fantastic journey
with Kate, knowing the food we create is
appreciated and an opportunity to meet a
whole range of new and like minded people.
Lows are rare thankfully, but throwing away
our food at the end of an event because the
expected numbers did not materialise, is
awful.
What advice would you give to other mums
thinking about a start-up?
Certainly this would be to tap into old skills
and passions as a starting point, recognising
that finally, there is a chance to do something
you’ve always wanted to do.

RECIPE FROM JAMIE OLIVER’S NEW CHRISTMAS COOK BOOK
TURKEY SLOPPY JOES
TASTY SLAW WITH GHERKINS & CHILLI, HOMEMADE BBQ SAUCE
The sloppy Joe is so much more than a sandwich or a burger, and giving it the Christmas
treatment means we’re taking that bun filled with delicious pulled meat and crunchy exciting
veg, served with gravy for dunking, to the next level.
FOOD & DRINK
SERVES 4
Total time: 20 minutes
200g leftover cooked higherwelfare
turkey meat
200ml leftover higher-welfare turkey gravy
1 carrot
1 apple
½ a red onion
2 sprigs of fresh mint
2 gherkins
1 fresh red chilli
4 seeded wholemeal buns
BBQ SAUCE
2 tablespoons tomato ketchup
1 tablespoon HP sauce
1 teaspoon English mustard
½ teaspoon chipotle Tabasco sauce
1 splash of Worcestershire sauce
Shred and pull apart your leftover turkey
meat and place in a small pan with a
splash of water and 4 tablespoons of gravy.
Pop a lid on and place on the lowest
heat for 10 minutes to warm through.
Warm the rest of the gravy in a separate
pan, ready to use it for dunking later.
Meanwhile, peel and finely shred the carrot,
matchstick the apple, peel and finely slice the
red onion, and pick and slice the mint leaves.
Place it all in a bowl with 1 tablespoon of
pickling liquid from your gherkin jar. Finely
slice the gherkins, using a crinkle-cut knife
if you’ve got one, and the chilli, add to the
bowl, mix well, lightly season and put aside.
Mix all the BBQ sauce ingredients together.
Split and toast your buns, then spread
the BBQ sauce inside them, top and
bottom. Pile your pulled turkey on the
bun bases, drizzle with a little gravy and
top with some of that tasty slaw. Pop the
bun lids on, and you’re away. Serve the
rest of the gravy on the side for a naughty
dunk, along with any leftover slaw.
Double up
This is a great recipe for parties, as it’s quick, and it’s easy to double or even
quadruple the quantities – let your guests build their own buns.

I set up Otta Design with a
partner in March 2014 having
retrained at KLC School of
Design in Chelsea Harbour.
We provide a comprehensive
interior design service to suit
every project and budget,
creating beautiful, yet functional,
bespoke interiors that balance
the demands of daily life whilst capturing the
spirit of the client. We are based in London
but take on projects throughout the UK.
Balancing work with kids - how do you
juggle it?
My business partner and I have 5 children
between us. We understand the demands
that this can cause and give each other a lot of
support. Flexibility is key.

Running a business is great
fun and it is stimulating. The
biggest high is creating solutions
for our clients, which give
them joy and strengthen their
identity. Making people happy
with beautiful results is hugely

a design, there is a lot of paperwork behind
every part of the business.
What advice would you give to other mums
thinking about a start-up?
Go for it! It will be a challenge, but it will
be worth it. The key thing is to be organized,
tenacious and to rigorously manage your time
so that you keep all the plates spinning.

My work
Week day mornings always prove to be a fun
juggling act getting my two daughters organised
for school. I try to make sure I drop them off at
Broomwood Hall in south west London at least
once a week. After the usual panic of lost school
bags, packed lunch preparation and last minute
spelling tests, I head to work. Usually this involves
a quick commute on the tube into Mayfair to get
to my desk for 8.15am, but today I need to get up
to Kings Cross to catch a train to Cambridge for a
meeting with our lettings team there.
At the end of the working day I always aim to be
at home by 7pm at the latest in time for reading
before bedtime and it’s also a chance to play the
‘best bit’ game where we all tell each other about
the highlight of our day.

On the train I can review my emails and doublecheck
the after-school nanny’s diary for that
afternoon – it’s invaluable for keeping me
organised. After a productive meeting with the
Cambridge team discussing stock levels and how
we can make the most of the current active market,
I head back to London.
After lunch I have a meeting with a landlord who
owns 150 buy-to-let properties across Kensington
and Chelsea who is looking for a new agency
to manage his portfolio. I come away feeling
really positive. At 4pm I dash to a pitch with a
Private Rented Sector developer who are building
regeneration projects for rent in zones 3 and 4 of
west London.

It’s not easy being a full time working mum and
sometimes I look at these immaculate working
women and wonder how they do it. I think if I
had a live-in personal trainer, make-up artist and
hairdresser I think I too could handle the working
week! It’s exhausting and occasionally a bit stressful
but I wouldn’t change a thing, I love being a
mummy but I also love my job – and most of the
time I have a good balance.

On the way there I receive a call from the school
to say that one of my daughters is unwell and
needs to come home early – everything was
running like clockwork up until this point and this
sort of incident reminds me how important it is
to have a strong network of friends, grandparents
and nannies around to help me out when I have
commitments at work.

ALLEGRA’S AMBITION
My name is Lucy Harley
and this summer I rode from
Prince’s Mead in Winchester
to Daymer Bay in Cornwall
on my pony, Wella, to
raise money for Allegra’s
Ambition, a charity set up
in memory of my best friend,
Allegra who passed away very suddenly, 16
days after her 16th birthday, in February 2015.
The charity aims to help other young
people, through participation in sport and
outdoor activities, to develop similar positive
behaviours and values to enhance their lives –
and be happier people. Like Allegra. Allegra
was the happiest, kindest person who adored
any sort of animal/ sport/ outdoor activity
and everyone who knew her adored her. Ever
since the charity was set up, her friends and
family have come together to organise creative
fund raising ideas and they have all been very
successful.
I thought this ride would
bring together all the things
that Allegra loved - Prince’s
Mead, Daymer Bay, riding
and a great challenge.
I found the route we would
use when I got in touch with
William Reddaway, who
had ridden around England visiting every
Cathedral. I also wrote to all the Hunts whose
country we would be passing through, and so
many people offered us a bed and stable/field
for the night that we were quite overwhelmed
by their kindness. During the ride we were
often joined by friends and also hunt members
either on horse back, bike, pram or foot and it
was so nice to have company and someone to
show me the way! The weather was kind to us
most of the time, and Wella absolutely loved
it all especially arriving at Daymer Bay and
cantering through the waves.
