HERBERT NOT
SHOCKED BY
GELDING’S
PROGRESS
Maybe it was the cold Dunedin winters
but South Canterbury breeder Ross
Herbert is pleasantly surprised that the
pacer who was struggling down South
is now kicking goals more than 1,000
km away in the North Island.
Chal Shocked notched up his second
win in three starts for Tim Vince and his
partner (and driver) Sheryl Wigg. The
Jereme’s Jet gelding won at Alexandra
Park on September 30 and then on
October 21st repeated the dose in an
amateur event at Cambridge Raceway.
In between those two runs the
5-year-old bay ran second behind Alta
Valencia.
“He always showed a bit early on but I
can’t believe he is as good as what he
is now. It was a different story in the
middle of winter when he was racing at
Forbury Park on cold old Otago winter
nights.
“I think the change of scenery and
warmer weather has done him the
world of good. I’m delighted for Tim and
Sheryl,” Herbert said.
Between April and July this year Chal
Shocked raced seven times at Forbury
Park for an 11th, a seventh, a fourth, an
eighth, a 10th, an 11th, and a ninth.
His lifetime form now reads 23 starts,
four wins, three seconds, and won
$18,833 in stakes.
and is now employed by Fonterra
“Chal Roco was bred by Charlie Smaill
at Jacca Lodge. I bought her when she
was still on her mother. She was an
honest race horse but she suffered from
near front-leg tendon problems so I put
her to Courage Under Fire (missed) and
then Dream Away in 2006,” Herbert
said.
That foal was named Chal Dream and
he won two races in New Zealand and
then another three in Australia,
Foal three – Chal Fire (A1:55.1) won
three races in New Zealand and then
another 12 ($129,188) in Australia.
“He’s the best horse I have bred so far.
He was by Western Terror. He could
have been anything.”
Chal Shocked is the fifth of Chal Roco’s
eight foals. He qualified 7.8 seconds
under the required time at Addington
CONT. P18
He raced Chal Shocked’s mother – Chal
Roco (by Live Or Die) from January 2004
to November 2006. She won on debut
at Washdyke on January 6, 2004 and
then went on to win two more races
from 35 starts.
