Artists’ Trust Fund
Unique Art Awards
2016

The Mouth Foot Painting Artists Trust Fund
The Mouth Foot Painting Artists Trust Fund for the Training of Handicapped Children in the Arts was established
in 1989 by the British Members of the international self-help co-operative, the Mouth & Foot Painting
Artists. The aim of the Trust is to provide financial assistance for individuals and organisations to further the
development of physically disabled children (up to the age of 21) in all artistic disciplines.
WHAT DO WE DO AS A TRUST?
Since its formation in 1989 the Trustees of the Trust Fund have helped various organisations and individuals.
They provide financial help with art and music workshops, music lessons and award grants to help purchase art,
craft and photography specialised equipment to enable young people to access the arts.Since March 2011 the
Trust Fund has awarded over £250,000 to organisations and individuals working with young disabled children.
UNIQUE ART AWARDS 2016
April 2016 saw the conception of a new project called ‘The Unique Art Awards’. It was conceived to
promote the arts to disabled children and young disabled adults.
The Unique Art Awards was launched at the National Rotary Conference in Bournemouth in April by
the Trusts three Trustees.
The competition is for all disabled children and young people who are interested in the arts. Split into
two age categories seven to fifteen and sixteen to twenty one years of age.
The 2016 Art categories were 2D Artwork, Sculpture, Photography, Music and Poetry.
The Trust Fund sent out in the post 1200 letters and posters to special schools, colleges, clubs and
societies throughout the UK. The Unique Art Awards web site was conceived and launched to gain
interest in the Awards and to keep participants informed with the Awards process.
300 entries were judged on the 9th August and the youngsters were informed on the 10th that their
artwork has been selected as a finalist.
On 17th October the Unique Art Awards 2016 were held at The Copthorne Tara Hotel in Kensington,
London. One hundred and twenty people attended the event. Finalists, their families, art teachers and
sponsors all enjoyed a drinks reception, three course meal and the Award presentations.
All but three of the finalists attended the awards celebrations. The three Finalists that could not attend
were represented by their teachers.
The 2016 Unique Art Awards was a fantastic start to this new and innovative project. The Trustees have
decided that it will run again next year, so keep an eye on our web site and Facebook page!

A message from Tom Yendell
Chairman of Trustees
The Mouth and Foot Painting Artists’ Trust Fund
For The Training of Handicapped Children In The Arts
I have been a professional Mouth and Foot Painter for the last thirty years. I was
born without arms and hands due to my Mother being prescribed the drug
Thalidomide. I have always seen myself as physically able, I just use my feet, mouth
and chin to do the everyday things that able-bodied people do with their hands.
Over the years I have been pigeon holed, being called a Thalidomide victim,
armless and disabled. It is the word “disabled” that I find totally inappropriate and
inaccurate. It is a very negative word, with words beginning with the prefix “dis’”
connoting negativity, dismember, dissatisfy and disaster for instance. I have always
wanted to try to find a new word that would describe my abilities.
Last year the Mouth and Foot Painting Artists were fortunate to have an exhibition of their artwork at the
Bristol Hot Air Balloon Fiesta. A number of our artists were showing their artwork and also demonstrating
their Mouth and Foot Painting Techniques. In such circumstances when there are children present I
always have a pile of postcards that are blank on their backs. When a young child comes over to watch me
drawing with my feet I ask his name, writing it in bubble writing on the postcard, I draw a small picture
alongside his name and then give it to him. A young boy came over to see what I was drawing; I asked
his name, “Adam” he said. He was ten years old. Watched by Adam and his parents I wrote his name and
drew a cartoon of him. I then gave the finished design to him. He took it, turned, walked a few paces and
stopped. He stood for a few seconds looking at his postcard then turned back to me and said ‘Thank you
so much for my picture I love your uniqueness’. I love the idea that I am unique. I am unique both in my
physicality and my art.
So this is where the idea of The Unique Art Awards came from.
Don’t forget to spread the word about the Unique Art Awards 2017
faces of these inspirational young
Receiving the teacher’s prize means so much - it’s not only
about the creative strides made possible for the learners with
the money. The recognition the award brings means that I
have an ear and a voice in order to further promote creative
practice-both from Senior Leaders in my school and beyond.
I’ve already met with Denise Topolski, a national leader of
NADFAS Young Arts, who wishes to collaborate for new ideas
within their charity.
Kathryn Hitchings
The Awards evening was a triumph, and the Mouth
and Foot Painters’ Trust Fund must be congratulated
in bringing recognition to these talented youngsters.
We look forward to supporting the UAA again in 2017.
GLYNIS WATTS – Director of Flat Spaces Foundation

It was a very touching moment to see all these
young talented children being presented with
their awards and standing in the middle of the
attention. I really think they felt very important
has experienced a upwind.
It was a very special evening and I was honoured to be a part of it.
An Lund Wahlberg - Mouth Painter, Denmark

‘The Unique Art Awards’ provided an innovative platform for uniquely
talented young artists. This novel, national art competition and the
work it generated, drew great adulation from all of the art experts
on the final judging panel and the large audience that attended the
event at a Central London hotel.
Described as the ‘The Oscars for Unique Art’ we believe the success of
this special awards ceremony, the first of its kind, will prove to be the
catalyst for the event to be repeated annually, for many years to come.
