And then there was man
And then there was another man
Worlds apart.
A few gray homs and you're one of them,

And even if your crown is not greced
With salt and pepper
They'll let you in if you act the part.
And then there is another piece · you rememberl
The land of tiny years and of triat and error ..
The realm of discovery and conquest
And of truth.
Once you were there.
Once you knew what it was like to live.
And then there was man.
And then there was another man
Worlds apart.
When their lips part
The sun comes through
The spaces between thei r teeth
And their eyes can warm the winter with a glance.
But there are some who will not touch a hand,
Those whose souls no longer hum the tune
And those who creep in midnight's cloak
To hide the salty hollows of their gloom.
And then there was man
And then there was another man
Worlds apan.
And you can read the wrinen word.
You can criticize and analyse
The (rol ickings 0 f th e men
Who delve the mind
And go beyond.
Propped up by a foam pillow
Your tired head watches
As a moon-shot leaves its earthy nest
And flies to eternity and beyond
To become lost in the mottled skv.
And in another pocket of the world
II is todav bur tnev don't know it
And the earth is bigger than the forest.
BUI this too is not known.
The Slone she calls
As it hones down a tree
But the secret will be kept
For a thousand years.

And then there are stained glass 10lIowers
Clustered about Ihe Creed
And thousands stuff the synagogue
To listen when the Rabbi speaks
Throngs of hearts, all waving
Await the Papal nod
As all have learned
To lime their lives
By the peeling 01 the belts.
But in the labs and on the tables
Of scientific minds
And others There is a differenl answer.
NOlhing.
They are nursed by perception
And guided by blind intelligence,
And take pity on the " be ad- pick ers"
- Misguided foolsl

...Skippy was a dog
Without a pedigree
But he had lile
For a while.
And in the flash of headligh IS
The unwashed ch ildren
Wandered far from home.
When the world caught up to Skippy
He hardly made a thud
BUI the driver felt his smooth body
Through the steel
The small heap of dog was broken.
Two shadows formed a crowd
And standing, they stared.
The man and boy saw Sk ippy
The driver look the man
Because th e man held Skippy
They went to that place.
" How much" he said
And then he ask ed for the paper.
The door shut.
It might have been conscience of sentiment
That made the driver squeak open the formaldehyde door
But the men in white said " No ,
We have the paper here
I t was his dog, you kn ow."
And then there was man

Worlds apart.
Somewhere in the foreverness of an eternal nigh t
A speck of mass revolves unnoticed
A sphere of sea and sand
A pie ce where a multitude of eyes
Watch th e same sun
And as our world turns, they say.
They say it pulls together
A concentration of mass
A unit
And we are pan of that unit
One sphere
One breath
One beat.
And Ihen there was man
