CSE DEPT. ACHIEVEMENTS Dr. Tamer Elsayed and his team won the Best Paper Award for his paper entitled “Why Is That Relevant? Collecting Annotator Rationales for Relevance Judgments” at The Fourth AAAI Conference on Human Computation and Crowdsourcing (HCOMP 2016) that is being currently held in USA. The conference is organized by AAAI and sponsored by Microsoft and Google among others. The paper is co-authored by Tyler Mcdonnell (University of Texas at Austin), Matthew Lease (University of Texas at Austin), and Mucahid Kutlu (Qatar University). The review and selection process is detailed here: http://www.humancomputation.com/2016/program.html#awards Dr. Abdelkarim Erradi won Best Paper Award at 14th International Conference on Service-Oriented Computing, at Alberta, Canada with the team from RMIT Melbourne. http://cs.adelaide.edu.au/~icsoc2016/awards.html Paper titled ‘Qualitative Economic Model for Long-Term IaaS Composition’. In collaboration with Thai researchers, Dr. Abdelaziz Bouras paper titled “Development of a Web-Based multi-criteria decision support system: Application to Humanitarian logistics” got the Best Paper Award of the ICDAMT 2016 international Conference. Dr. Mutaz Saleh and Prof. Jihad Al Jaam received the best research paper of the year 2016 in the 9 th Annual International Conference on Computer Games Multimedia & Allied Technologies CGAT 2016, http://www.cgames.com.sg/index.html The selection was based on innovation, originality and application. The work is done entirely by researchers in the CSE dept.
CSE DEPT. ACHIEVEMENTS QU at TREC .. A Success Story By Dr. Tamer Elsayed All participating teams in TREC over 25 years. Only two teams from Qatar; QU is one of them When the Text REtrieval Conference (TREC), that is being held every year in the US since 1992, had its twenty-second version in 2013, Qatar University made its first appearance in the history of the prestigious conference. Research teams from all over the world (including top academic and industrial institutes) participate and compete in solving common research problems in the field of information retrieval. Since then, we (a research group at Computer Science and Engineering Department including undergraduate, MSc, and PhD students) realized that TREC is a great opportunity to build our starting team, work on real and hot problems in the field, and easily benchmark our work. With very few participating teams from the Arab and the Muslim world, we were encouraged to continue to appear there over the years. While participation with world-class teams always provides a great learning experience (especially for new groups), “competing” with them is obviously very challenging. Over four years of participation, our team has gained invaluable experience, built a research infrastructure, and also achieved promising results. Our ranking (and experience!) kept improving, from the 6 th rank in 2013 to the 4 th in 2014 and 3 rd in 2015 in different research problems. We were also selected several times (among few teams) to present our work at the conference. This year, TREC celebrated its 25 th anniversary and our team (including two CSE graduate students Maram Hasanain and Reem Suwaileh) has reached a historical rank in one of the organized research problems; we were ranked first among 19 research teams from USA, Canada, France, Australia, China, India, and Hong Kong. This is the first time ever for a team from the Arab and Muslim world to reach this place, making a history for our team, for our department, and for our university.
