4 News & Updates Feature Articles 5 NĀ TE TUMUAKI #LL16 – YOUR YEAR IN REVIEW Let’s get real for a second - December is the busiest month of the year. I have one home night in the coming three weeks and I can’t wait for it! I know for a fact that most of us are experiencing weeks like this at the mo, so coordinating a night to do a #LLChat would be next to impossible me thinks. But what a year it has been! Full of highlights, lowlights and (for me at least) a whole bunch of things I want to do differently. What I ask for you this Christmas is to share - even if it’s just one tweet - something memorable from your year. I tō rātou matenga, mahue mai ana ko tātou hei pīkau i ngā mahi i mahia e rātou. My year as President began 1 July 2016, and since then, there has been a significant amount of personal change. You think you know what you’ve signed up for, and in hindsight, you may forgive yourself for ever believing, ‘we got this’. Life has a way of surprising even the most organised of people (and librarians’ are pretty organised); challenging the very fabric of organised life and creating organised chaos. Such is the life of new older parenthood and wedded bliss. Recently, I had the pleasure of attending the launch of the Te Puna Foundation hosted by and at Te Puna Mātauranga o Aotearoa, National Library of New Zealand. It was great to mix and mingle with LIANZA members, library lovers, as well as a chance to get a sneek peek inside the new space that will hold three iconic constitutional documents: Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Treaty of Waitangi; He Whakaputanga o te Rangatiratanga o Nu Tireni, Declaration of Independence of the United Tribes of New Zealand; and Women’s Suffrage Petition, Te Petihana Whakamana Pōti Wahine. This is a new permanent exhibition that will open in early 2017. Be sure to check it out. I head back to work on Monday 12 December, and I am very much looking forward to returning to library world, zoom meetings, weekend schools, and all things LIANZA. Thanks so much to LIANZA Council, LIANZA office and LIANZA members for your support during this short period of parental leave. I’d like to take this opportunity to wish you and your whanau a safe, and happy holiday season. I hope you enjoy getting out and making the most of the glorious weather, relaxing and creating more memorable moments. Finally, if you spot me in an airport hunched over my laptop, or out and about, stop and say ‘kia ora’. 2017 looks to be an interesting year! “Nāu te rourou, nāku te rourou, LIANZA powered by our members for our members” Pai mārire, Te Paea Can’t display the original? If every reader could take a minute out of their busy schedule to share with their library whanau one itty bitty thing from their year imagine the depth and breadth of stories we’ll have at our finger tips. A selection of posts will be posted in next month’s Library Life too. Need some help rummaging the ‘mind palace’ for ideas? I’ve posted one of my highlights above. So come on everybody, get out your device and share, because libraries are awesome, we do amazing things and these are things that need to be shared. #LL16 – give it a go!
