Special Interview
We interview community
Aalim and Imam of Howick
Masjid, Maulana Zakariyya
urchie. Maulana is an expert drug
ounsellor and heads the Drugs
wareness Drive (DAD) on behalf of
arul Ihsan Centre. Maulana has
any years of experience with drug
ictims and their families and has
ectured extensively on this topic.
. How serious is the drug problem
n South Africa?
nfortunately the drug problem in
ur community has spiralled out of
ontrol and is a threat to the entire
ommunity.
. How serious is the problem
mong Muslim boys and girls? Are
here stats?
nfortunately our Muslim youth are
eavily involved, being a minority
opulation of Muslims in South
frica, we have close onto 40 Muslim
ehabilitation centres in the country
nd many smaller organisations and
ndividuals actively involved in
ealing with this scourge. I am not
ware of any collated stats or
fficial figures.
. Why do young Muslims do drugs?
any different factors and reasons,
ne key factor is peer pressure, easy
cces to wealth, freedom, lack of
upervision, domestic pressures,
ack of Deen in the home, poor
ommunication between parent and
hild etc.
. What should parents do to help
heir children avoid drugs?
arents must educate and empower
hemselves with information about
rugs, keep a close watch over their
hildren, spend quality time with
heir children and be alert to signs
hat could suggest that their child is
aking drugs. Do not allow your child
ree access to large sums of money
nd the freedom to go anywhere
ith friends unless you know where
nd with whom your child is.
. Who is DAD and what is their
ork?
DAD, is an educational campaign
initiated Darul Ihsan Centre, with
the focus on creating awareness and
education in the community about
this scourge. We want to reach out
t o a l l M u s l i m c o m m u n i t i e s
educating, empowering, creating
awareness about the prohibition
and harms of drugs and providing
support and counselling to those
affected.
6. How can the Muslim community
benefit from and help DAD?
We depend heavily on public
support. Your best support is to help
us spread the information about the
harms of drugs, encourage youth to
attend DAD programs and workshops
that are in different areas. Visit our
website, make suggestions to us
for improvement and make dua for
those who are affected.
7. What is the long term plan to
stem the drug problem among the
youth?
More proactive participation from
parents, teachers, community etc.
to really expose the destructive
nature of this problem. Parents
should not be indifferent to the
problem and learn to accept the
realities regarding their child. It is
easier to help a user in the
experimental stages.
8. How can DAD be reached?
You may contact the Islamic Centre
Howick office on 0333302278 or any
