Pop Culture: Big Body Beauties
NeNe Leakes:
A surge of plus-size powerhouses are making headlines in the fashion and
entertainment industries. These women are not only rich and famous, but
their confidence and accomplishments are making a profound impact on
society. Their prominence is also beginning to spill over into the publishing
industry, with more authors writing plus-size heroines into their novels.
We’ve compiled a list of fifteen noteworthy “Big Body” beauties who are
putting the POP back in Pop Culture!
Reality TV star turned television personality, producer, author and fashion
designer, Linnethia “NeNe” Leakes is definitely one to watch. Her celebrity
rose as the leading lady of The Real Housewives of Atlanta. Her divorce
and remarriage to Gregg Leakes was publicized on the Housewives and led
to their spin-off series, I Dream of NeNe: The Wedding. With stints on Glee,
The New Normal, Celebrity Apprentice, and Dancing With the Stars, a
fashion line that sold out within days of its launch, and her Broadway debut
in the musical, Cinderella, we can only expect bigger and better things on
the horizon for America’s favorite Atlanta Housewife.
Author: Michelle Cuttino
Loni Love
Loni Love has parlayed her comedic skills into a blossoming career as TV
host, guest panelist, and actress. Love’s size is not the only thing that
stands out among her thinner counterparts on the daytime talk show, The
Real; her animated personality also makes her a force to be reckoned with.
Love has recently released her book, Love Him or Leave Him: But Don’t
Pick Up the Tab,” adding author to her growing resume.
Adele
Adele: Having ten Grammy awards under your belt is validation enough, but
when Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul, decides to cover your signature
song, you know you have arrived! Although many pounds thinner, this
sultry songstress from England has made her 2006 MySpace musical
debut count. Adele Laurie Blue Adkins has gained worldwide recognition,
and her third album is highly-anticipated.
Gabourey Sidibe
After being told by Joan Cusack, "Oh honey, you should really quit the
business. It's so image-conscious,” Gabourey landed a lead role in the
Oscar-winning movie, Precious. She has also had recurring roles on The
Big C, American Dad, two seasons of American Horror Story, and now
Queen Latifah
Zane
Dana Elaine Owens first appeared on the scene as
Queen Latifah, a plus-size rapper who entertained us
with her debut single, “Wrath of My Madness.” Queen
Latifah has worn the hat of songwriter, singer,
actress, model, producer, and talk show host. She
has earned many noteworthy awards and accolades.
Queen Latifah is a celebrity spokeswoman for
CoverGirl cosmetics, and has also launched the
CoverGirl Queen Collection, Latifah’s line for women
of color. Her accomplishments have proven that fullfigured
women are the icons of today.
When you hear the term “Queen of Erotica,” the last
thing most would associate the phrase with is a plussize,
African American woman. However, Kristina
Laferne Roberts, aka Zane, has embraced the
moniker, and continues to turn the literary industry on
its ear with her steamy narratives. With a Cinemax
series, publishing company, and first-feature film
based on her novel, Addicted, under her belt, we look
forward to seeing what other naughtiness Zane has
in store for us.
Melissa McCarthy
Melissa Ann McCarthy is a comedienne who gained
fame from her many supporting roles in both
television and film. This high-spirited actress has
moved from sideline to prime time, with lead roles in
the sitcom, Mike & Molly¸ as well as the movies,
Identity Thief, Tammy and The Heat. McCarthy
makes no qualms about her weight on or off screen,
and the characters she plays mirror her carefree
plus-size persona.
Amber Riley
We fell in love with singer-songwriter Amber Patrice
Riley when she played Mercedes Jones on the
television series Glee. She performed an “I Will
Always Love You” tribute to Whitney Houston days
after Houston’s untimely death. Riley went on to
become the first African American woman to win
Dancing With the Stars. She is still sexy and curvy,
but experienced a significant weight loss due to
health issues, as well as the strenuous rehearsal
routine for DWTS.
Anansa Sims
Anansa Sims is the daughter of supermodel, Beverly
Johnson. Although more curvy than overweight, Sims
is proud to fall into the plus-size model category. “My
mom contributed so much to society by showing that
black is beautiful. Now I realize my contribution can
be being a real-size or normal-size model, showing
women that it is OK to have some meat on your
bones and it is OK to love yourself that way,” Sims
said.
Shonda Lynn Rhimes
is an award-winning screenwriter, director, and head
of her own production company, ShondaLand.
Rhimes has become a household name since
creating Grey’s Anatomy, and the highly addictive
Scandal television series. She is also the executive
producer of the legal drama, How to Get Away with
Murder. ABC has also picked up her new drama, The
Catch, for their 2015-2016 season. Thanks to
Rhimes, ABC has a “Thank God It’s Thursday”
(“TGIT”) lineup of her shows. Since Rhimes
represents as a plus-size woman of power, we’d like
to think “TGIT” actually stands
Ify Whitfill
Curves for a Cause | 12

As long as I can remember I’ve been entrepreneurial. As a child I washed cars,
I was paid to run errands for my neighbor, and I had a paper route. Once, on a
grade school trip, my mother gave me $10 spending money, which was not
enough, but it’s all she could spare. At night when everyone got the munchies,
I sold them candy for more than 10 times what I paid. I went home with more
money than I started with.
I was also successful at school. I acted, played sports, and instruments. I gave
up my lunchtime so I could practice and perfect my skills. I picked up dancing,
and even ran for office. If you had ask me then why I did this, I wouldn’t have
had an answer. I just had an inner desire to be part of something, and do all I
could do. I went on to graduate high school in the top 25% of my class, and
received a full scholarship to play sports in college. I finished college in 3
years, and received my Masters in Business Administration within 5 years of
graduating high school. After college, I excelled in my career, and was quickly
climbing to the top in my field. I
I was grateful for the success in my life, but my desire for a family finally
trumped my desire for a career. So in June 2012 I walked away from corporate
America to be a full-time mother. The ability to walk away from my career was
possible because I knew I could build it again. I realized that I would only get
one chance to raise my children, so for me it was the right thing to do.
Unexpectedly, it allowed me to think more entrepreneurially about how to
generate an income. In 2013, I became a freelance marketing consultant, and
in 2014 I launched my cosmetics business.
In order to succeed at my businesses, I had to learn how to lead, and lead well.
I began to reflect on who I am as a leader. It’s then that I realized I need to
gain the knowledge necessary to be intentional about my success. The books I
read opened my mind to the real cause of my success thus far, which until
then I had not stopped to reflect on. It is a simple principle that is repeated in
the bible many times, many authors have written about it, and all successful
people practice it. It is the power of the mind. As a man thinketh, that he will
become. I always believed that I would succeed at whatever I did in life, and so
I did. The bible teaches, “For every one that asketh receiveth”, and without
even realizing it, I was practicing this eternal principle. Even in my ignorance,
I was blessed. I would be ungrateful if I did not acknowledge the fact that all
my success, was not my own, but instead a fulfillment of my desires that God
has given to me. So I say to all those trying to make their way and find success,
take the leap, and believe in yourself, because God will always fill your cup.
heal from that life.
Curves for a Cause Women Empowerment Fashion Show allowed her to
experience this with the youngest of her daughters, Bailey. Bailey will head off
to college in the fall, so it was a bonding experience for them both. But not
only that, it was also fulfilling a dream that she pretty much gave up on years
ago.
Being that she has always been a “fluffy” girl, the opportunity for her to walk
the runway or be featured in a magazine was just a dream. But with the Curves
For A Cause she will see both come to fruition and she could not be happier.
It’s her desire that others will see her step out of her box and get the courage
to push themselves to do the same. It's important to step out of their box and
do something differrent and something they never thought possible.
Thank you Socialite Society for giving “us” a platform to be beautiful and shine
Yesterday! Today! Tomorrow?
My Yesterday: Moving constantly when the rent is due.
Lights and water cut off for lack of payment. Sent to a
babysitter that touched me and made me do adult things for
food…5 years old at the start. Drugs, mental and sexual
abuse, neglect, demeaning remarks. Attempted suicide in my
view. Saw it! Lived it! Survived it all!
My Today: My daughters are grown and my grandson is a
handful…but I’m happy. I learned from my father to never
depend on a man to guide, lead, or protect me. From my
mother, I learned that I can do all things through Christ
because he is my real strength and that whatever I start,
finishing is the real accomplishment. These same lessons
were instilled in my daughters by example throughout my
marriage, divorce, and today. Knowing my strengths and
weaknesses, I see them in my girls. I’m very proud to be
called momma and nanny because I know that I am an
example of strength and faith for my children regardless of
my failed steps, falls and/or blatant faithless acts of defiance.
I am a teacher till the day I die. Eighteen years as an educator
has brought me tears of sadness and joy, pride and concern.
My Wish for All: To all women; I say, don’t let life’s
hardships, traumatic experiences, and failures keep you from
fulfilling Gods plan for your life. Use them to spur you forth
and strengthen your resolve to be a beacon of hope for those
who experience similar or equivalent events. Give God the
praise when you make it through and let others know that He
is the reason you smile today.
I'm a 33 year old female who loves to inspire, motivate and provide others
with confidence. Everything you are going through won't define you. You have
to encourage yourself to be who and what you want to be. I have 5 boys all of
whom I've had to raise without help until my recent engagement.
While in school I miscarried with what would have been another son.
Although fighting through depression I still managed to continue school while
maintaining my grades. Along the way I became pregnant within that same
year and birthed another boy (rainbow child- a baby born after a miscarriage).
I was determined to graduate on time AND I did with a 3.2 gpa.
Earning several certifications including my EMS national registry and a dual
certification in Indiana and Kentucky. I then found a career that I love and
while in this field, I was able to earn yet another certification as a CPR and
First Aid Instructor through the American Red Cross. I'm currently a Family
Home Provider for 2 women with intellectual disabilities. I care for them on a
24/7 basis. One of whom is the biggest success story for the crisis team here in
Louisville.
I'm currently a full time student at Simmons College working on my Bachelors
in Religious Studies. I plan to pledge to a sorority during my time there. After
graduation I will transition to a seminary student and ultimately hope to earn
my doctorate in Divinity. Also, I plan to get my certification in drug and
addiction counseling as well as a marriage counselor.
My life has been far from perfect. Ive seen how drugs can affect and destroy a
family. I also see how dangerous anxiety and depression can be. It causes you
to cling to outside forces and not believe in yourself....But God!
During all the transitions in my life I am stand. I decided to push through and
have finally found my purpose!
You can, you will and you shall be GREAT! Find your purpose AND live!
She has learned through her own experience how to become a specialist and
Breketa Goodwin I am a woman who has stepped out on faith, and embraced
the beautiful journey of self- discovery.
It’s amazing how this journey reveals that the greatest person you will ever
have the privilege of knowing is yourself. We spend so much time and energy
wrapped up in the opinion of people, our own limited beliefs, fears,
insecurities and doubts. We spend so much time picking ourselves apart for all
the things we are not instead of embracing all the things we are right now as
we grow into the greatest version of ourselves. From this moment forward
promise yourself that you will be honest with yourself, patient with yourself,
and gentle with yourself. Promise that you will begin to take care of yourself
even better than you do everyone else. I am a firm believer that you must be
the first example of how the world is supposed to treat you. Love you,
encourage you, celebrate you, and honor you! You are more than enough and
you have been strengthened for this journey.
Always keep your eyes on growth and you will never stop growing. It’s so easy
to tell a story of all the hell you have been through, but what for? We all have a
story of pain and hurt, my purpose in life is to reveal to people that there’s life
on the other side of the rejection, brokenness, sickness, failures, confusion
and disappointments. I have been placed here to live my life in such a way that
it’s contagious. I just want to be the light in someone’s darkness….I want to
show people the beauty that is found after pain!!!I am a woman who not only
knows her story, but has found the power WITHIN her story. You are
Shirmeika Sprouls, 42 and proud mother of a
handsome 25 year old son. I have been employed at GE
for the last 20 years. The last 23 years have been a
struggle as far as my weight is concerned.
It started with 2 car wrecks within a year of each other,
at first I didn’t notice it but I slowly started gaining
weight. I guess you could say life happened, (IE. Child,
relationships, work) to cope with it food became my
best friend. As my weight went up, my confidence and
self esteem went down.
I was a very good actress because no one knew how I
really felt on the inside about myself. I tried everything
to lose the weight, fad diets, diet pills you name it I
tried it. I would lose weight but when I went back to
eating regular food, the weight came back plus more.
In 2008 my step mother gave me some information
about the lap band, and after a lot of research and
praying I had the procedure done in January 2009. It
was the best thing I could have done for myself.
I’m not saying it has been easy, because it hasn’t;
however I have lost 163 pounds. I feel fantastic, sexy
and that I can do anything I set my mind to. My
confidence is so much better, with the help of my
friends, family and my new sisters with Socialite
Society & Curves for a Cause the sky is the limit.
Born and raised here in Louisville, Kentucky, Brittani
Humphrey is an aspiring Singer/Model. Ever since she
was a little girl she's had a passion for singing. Her
parents used to call her their 'Favorite Little Song Bird'.
At age Five she joined her church's Children's Choir
and so it started the journey to the rest of her life.
Singing in the church choir is where Brittani began to
recognize her true potential. In 2014 she began to take
her talents out into the Music Industry. Brittani was
given the opportunity to participate in a Music
Industry Training Program known as AMTC. (Actors,
Models and Talent for Christ). This opportunity paved
the way for her to perform and record with some of the
top producers in Atlanta.
Not only did AMTC provide opportunities musically,
she became madly in love with Modeling. Since
completion of the program, Brittani has modeled in
several different fashion shows around the city and
even signed to a local Louisville comedian. She has
always felt at home behind the lens of a camera.
Brittani has dreams of being picked up by a Major
Modeling Company.
It such a short time she God has presented several
opportunities for Brittani to gain experience and
knowledge. She will continue putting her best foot
forward in pursuing both Modeling and Singing. Her
motto, and favorite scripture verse, has always been, "I
can do ALL things through Christ who gives me
strength. - Philippians 4: 13"
Make that dream a reality!
By: Vonda Williams
Ever had the feeling that you are capable of doing so much more but never
know how to get there? I too had these plans and ideas stuck in my head and
heart but never really knew how in the heck to get from step A to step Z.
I soon found out that not everyone is interested in helping you "crack the
code" it's just not at the top of their agenda. I wanted to find the answer
myself to help others.
I not only want to help those in the same dilemma but to teach the youth to
know as well! On my quest to find the answer on how to execute a plan, I
started to connect with incredible and amazing successful people that have
changed my life with valuable infomation.
I have learned: First thing first, if you plan on moving forward with your same
negative small unimaginative mindset, please just stop now. Doing the same
thing expecting a different outcome is insanity! But if you really want to make
life changing decisions that will get you what you want you will have to work
to limit your negative thinkining. Next, have a goal set in place. KNOW exactly
what you want. Make sure it's a clear goal. To try and have a million goals at
the same time will cause you to have scattered focus. You will not have the
drive you need to reach that ultimate goal because you will become way to
overwhelmed with too much on your plate! Have a clear and decisive vision of
what you really want. This vision should be so plain and so clear that you can
see it past all current distractions in your life.
Now that you know what you want you need to know WHY you want it. You
can't reach your goal without having a heart racing reason for wanting to get
there. So now you have your goal, and you know exactly why you want to
accomplish it, next thing you need to do is BELIEVE. Even though your
surroundings could show a total different story you have to believe pass your
current circumstances! The one way to do this is to do some cleaning! Get rid
of ALL negative garbage in you life. Surround yourself around everything and
everyone that are positive and supportive. You will need this when times are
tough and when things don't seem so promising. When the time comes you
will need that extra push of encouragement.
Also, you need to take your plan and break it down in bite size pieces. You
CAN NOT eat entire cow in one day, but if you break it down into small pieces
and take it one day at a time you will see you have eventually completed all of
the steps to get you there. Take small steps every day toward what you want.
Small steps done everyday will get you closer and closer to your goal.
There is no need of worrying about mistakes along the way, you just have to
keep moving. You can not sweat the small stuff. Every decision you make is a
good one even the bad ones. The bad mistakes will pose as lessons. Learn from
them and never stop moving!
The closer you continue to get to your goal, stop and congratulate yourself
along the way. You will only continue to do things you feel you are successful
at. This feeling of success will cause you to press forward for more success!
Never leave your eye off your vision. Eat, sleep and breath what you want and
where you want to be.
Remember, it's your goal, your vision and your plan not everyone in the world
needs to know. Have that inner circle that is very small an tight that you can
share success with, bounce ideas off of and get advice. These circle of people
you can count on to help push you in the direction you seek to go.
Once you have reached your goal (and you will because you visioned it, you
believed in it, and you are excited about it) don't stop there, reach for higher
heights! Think outside your comfort zone! Once you have reached the moon
shoot for the galaxy and pull someone with you! Pay it forward!
So there you have it, this should be a recipe to use when ever you strive to
reach for what you want out of life and designing your own happiness!
She grew up in a single family home in the west end part of Louisville
there she got into some trouble and was kick out of school. Jenny spent the
rest of her school years at Buechel high school where she worked hard to come
out a year early graduating in 2011.
After high school she attend Empire Beauty School than later enrolled into
ATA collage where she became a dental assistant . She truly enjoys her job and
plans to go back to school to becoming a hygienist.
She loves spending time with family and friends as well as singing and
dancing. Her smile can turn a person’s bad day into a good day. Shopping is
also one of her favorite hobbies.
When she was six years old her brother was killed in the house were they grew
up. After that it was her and her mother Jennifer Cooksey. Her mother has
been her biggest suppoter. They have always managed to get though whatever
life seem to throw their way.
One of her biggest struggles in life has always been her weight and her skin
color. She always saw herself as too black, ugly and fat. She would cry to her
mother asking why God made her that way. She would dream about being
lighter in color and look different. One day her mother sat her down in the
mirror and had her stare back at her reflection. She realized how beautiful
she was and as well as how beautiful her skin tone. She understood God made
everyone different for a reason.
Today she Jenny is more confident than she has ever been. She loves her skin
weight, shape. and everything about her. One of her most favorite saying is:
“If it’s not curvy it’s not right. Learn to finally except herself for who she
really is was not easy but she learned to do just that.
No matter the direction life may take her she knows to keep her head high and
always pushes to do better. Jenny believes she can do anything though Jesus
Christ that strengthen her!
Whatever she puts her mind to theres nothing in the world she can’t do!!!
