The use of reference clamping systems for the compacting of metal and ceramic powders leads to a considerable<br />

increase in productivity and compaction quality. At the same time the demands on tool, press and adapter<br />

accuracy and accuracy of alignment and referencing of the reference clamping systems to each other is rapidly<br />

increasing.<br />

The alignment and measurement systems of <strong>ProGrit</strong> are needed to reach the level of this increased accuracy<br />

requirements and guarantee an entry free of trouble into the compaction technology with reference clamping<br />

systems.<br />

<strong>Measurement</strong> systems support press, die set and reference clamping systems of Dorst, Erowa,<br />

Fette, Kobayashi, Komage, Osterwalder, Proment, Precision Compacting, <strong>ProGrit</strong>, System 3R°<br />

The measurement systems are characterized by a mobile hardware with easy-to-use and modularly expandable<br />

software components and by inexpensive high-precision measurement devices.<br />

The two measurement systems APC-4i and TPS-3i represent the core functions of the <strong>ProGrit</strong> measurement<br />

technology.<br />

APC 4i measures the geometry of the chuck on the press plates in reference to the guides of the press. The<br />

geometry can be corrected immediately after the measurement in the press or die set by using the <strong>ProGrit</strong> geometry<br />

correction system.<br />

TPS-3i measures the position of the reference clamping systems to the defined reference point - usually the die<br />

chuck. The position of the reference clamping system is moved and fixed by means of the <strong>ProGrit</strong> displacement<br />

system in the optimum position.<br />

The alignment, measurement and analysis systems work on<br />

the base of high precision electronic distance measuring<br />

systems. The measuring signals are amplified by special<br />

electronics. The software of the mobile measurement<br />

module calculates, analyses, displays and digitally logs all<br />

the measurement data. The operation of the mobile measurement<br />

module is done via a touch screen.<br />

Force and temperature can be measured optionally and<br />

combined with the distance measurement. This option is<br />

useful for the analysis of compaction processes and life<br />

cycle management of presses and die sets.<br />

For presses and die sets with a difficult access a small LCD display is optional<br />

available for the TPS-3i system.<br />

The measurement systems can be expanded modularly around the mobile measurement module MMCompact,<br />

MRTablet plus MMUSB with the appropriate software and measurement device.<br />

The APC-4i is a high precision measurement system for inspection, measurement and calibration of presses and<br />

die sets.<br />

Press / Die Set<br />

Presses and die sets have three or more carrier plates which are fixed to the press or the die set and run the<br />

reference clamping systems with the compaction tools in vertical direction. The quality of the compacted parts<br />

depends on the accuracy and rigidity of the guides and on the angular accuracy and rigidity of the support<br />

plates of the press and the die set.<br />

The APC-4i measurement system measures the parallelism (a,b,c) or the angular positions () of the carrier<br />

plates, the compaction tools and the reference clamping systems during the vertical movement. Guidance accuracy<br />

and error in the angular position of the carrier plates are detected, analysed and digitally logged. On the<br />

basis of these measurements the geometry of the press and the die set will be corrected according to the<br />

calculated correction values from the software and the <strong>ProGrit</strong> geometry correction technology.<br />

Displacements due to vertical and horizontal forces can be measured and the static rigidity of press and die set<br />

can be calculated.<br />

The measurement tools are mainly based on cylindrical measurement pins and a hollow cylindrical measurement<br />

fixture, which carries the electronic probes. Depending on the placement of the measurement pin and the<br />

measuring holder different parts of the press or the die set can be measured and analysed.<br />

Highest precision combined with simple user interface of the APC-4i software allow a quick and optimized<br />

measurement of the accurate and static rigidity of press and die set.<br />

<strong>Measurement</strong> Set Up and <strong>Measurement</strong> System APC-4i for Measuring<br />

under Compaction Force<br />

The shown measurement setup allows the measurement of the radial<br />

rigidity of the system of press, die set and reference clamping system<br />

under the action of a compaction force. The measurement is done in<br />

the radial directions X and Y with the help of four probes and a round<br />

measurement pin (e.g. P-002 684).<br />

Under the influence of the compaction force the round elastomer<br />

spring element is deformed and the radial movement of the<br />

measurement pin is measured.<br />

The measured deflections provide information about the rigidity of<br />

the system press, die set and reference clamping system in the<br />

compaction process under compressive force.<br />

The Tooling Positioning System TPS-3i is a high precision measurement system for the alignment of reference<br />

clamping systems on presses or die sets. TPS-3i supports all on the market currently available reference clamping<br />

system, presses and die sets.<br />

Highest precision combined with a very easy user interface allowing a fast and a high precision alignment of<br />

the reference clamping systems to each other in the range of an accuracy of 1/10 micron and 1 arc second.<br />

Optimized and to the TPS-3i measurement technology adapted measurement tools and adjustment fixtures are<br />

used for a rapid and accurate shifting of the reference clamping system and guarantee a quick and precise<br />

ZRM Reference Measuring System<br />

Referencing of Z0 levels of reference clamping systems for presses<br />

and die sets<br />

The use of reference clamping systems in the compaction process enables<br />

the consistent work with Z0 reference levels from tool design over the<br />

tool shop up to the press.<br />

The Z0 level defines in the Z direction the reference level for the clamping<br />

of the tools in the chuck. If the Z0-levels in the press are referenced<br />

to each other, the filling, compacting and ejecting positions can be exactly<br />

approached without any presetting in account of the tool dimension by<br />

the press control.<br />

The ZRM measurement system references via the precisely known punch<br />

length the Z0 levels of the reference clamping system in the accuracy of<br />

1/10 microns to each other.<br />

Adaptation to new compaction tools are only done over transmission of<br />

current punch lengths and the dunk and cut data.<br />

The transmission of the tool and compaction data can be done manually<br />

and automatically via identification system of the compaction tools (RFID,<br />

ident code, ...). The control of the press calculates out of the tool data and<br />

the reference data of the Z0 levels the new target values for filling,<br />

compacting and ejecting. The control of the compaction orders, the management<br />

of the geometry, the set up and process data can be done via a<br />

process control system (COMPACTION <strong>ProGrit</strong>) or a database. Compensation<br />

on the basis of tool rigidity (compression) and powder data can be<br />

calculated and hand over to the press control on.<br />

PAS-3i Palletization Alignment System<br />

Palletizing and positioning of compaction tools - punch and die<br />

The PAS-3i system is used for the high precision alignment of punches and dies on pallets of reference clamping<br />

systems.<br />

Modern production concepts manufacture punches and dies directly on pallets of reference clamping systems.<br />

Often it is necessary to align punches and dies on pallets. This is the case when existing unpalletized tools<br />

(existing tools) should be placed first time on pallets, or when newly produced tools have to be corrected<br />

regarding the position to the pallet. Another important application arises from the necessary positioning of wire<br />

cutted punches, which cannot be manufactured on pallets in the wire cut process.<br />

The PAS-3i system moves according to the position deviations X, Y and C the compaction tool to the target<br />

position (X=Y=C=0). The position deviations are measured in relation to the reference clamping system on a<br />

coordinate measurement machine. Deviations in the die position in relation to the reference clamping system<br />

will be calculated in the target position of the punch.<br />

Adapted measurement and movement fixtures allow rapid and precise<br />

translational and rotational displacement in the range of 1/10 micron<br />

and 1 arc second. The alignment and fixing process can be reduced to a<br />

few minutes.<br />

Highest precision combined with a very easy user interface allow a<br />

quick and best possible alignment of punches and dies on pallets of<br />

reference clamping systems.<br />

The PAS 3i supports all on the market available reference clamping<br />

systems.<br />

TCQ Tooling Calibration Quality<br />

Full automated qualification, measurement and calibration of compaction<br />

tools – punch, die and core rod<br />

The TCQ system is used for the qualification and the<br />

calibration of compaction tools in the tool shop or the press<br />

department before the compaction process.<br />

TCQ automatically measures and qualifies the quality of the<br />

fitting between punch and die, the punch lengths and pressrelevant<br />

data such as compaction heights.<br />

The measurement of the fitting between upper and lower<br />

punch to the die delivers qualitative statements about<br />

- Fitting accuracy / clearance between punch and die<br />

- Actual wear situation in the system punch and die<br />

The measurement and storage of the relevant data for the<br />

compaction process<br />

MAS-xi <strong>Measurement</strong> System for<br />

Multi Axial Compaction<br />

<strong>Measurement</strong> and referencing of multi axial compaction tools for closed,<br />

opened and splitted die<br />

Multi axial presses have axes which are perpendicular to the main compaction<br />

axis. With this set up geometries with holes and undercuts,<br />

transverse to the main compaction axis, can be produced.<br />

The MAS-xi system is used on multi axial presses which are equipped with<br />

a reference clamping system. These reference clamping systems clamp<br />

and position the compaction tools within +/- 1 micron. The chucks are<br />

positioned to each other within 1 micron and build up the vertical main<br />

compaction axis through their centers.<br />

Splitted dies or compaction processes with cross punches (opened or closed<br />

die) require the positioning of the cross punch or the die segments<br />

within a precision of +/- 1 micron to the vertical main compaction axis.<br />

This high positional accuracy relative to the main compaction axis is<br />

needed for injection of the cross punches in the die or of positioning of<br />

the die segments, so that together with the top and bottom punch the<br />

cavity will be formed in a perfect and highly precise way.<br />

The MAS-xi measurement system is used for the high precision positioning<br />

and set up of cross punches and die segments. With this set up green parts<br />

can be compacted free of burr or burr less in a high quality and compaction<br />

tool breakage can be avoided.<br />

For measurement and referencing of cross punches or die segments there are two different possibilities existing.<br />

On the one hand, the referencing of the probe can be done directly to a non moving and precise part of<br />

the die (only for closed and opened die possible). On the other hand, the referencing of the probe can be done<br />

by using an additional reference element, which is either clamped into the bottom punch chuck or the die<br />

chuck.<br />

Mechanical stops which are not equipped with their own length measurement<br />

or a nonius must be adjusted by the help of a second measurement<br />

system. This measurement system measures the current<br />

actual position of the mechanical stop and displays the deviation<br />

from the target position.<br />

The mechanical stop can be adjusted with the help of this measuring<br />

system within a short time.<br />
