Executive Producers: Ben Bowie, John Smithson, Susan Winslow Producer: Rory Griffin Line Producer: Mark Wright Series Editor: Iain Riddick Director: Nathan Williams PBS / NOVA / Building the Great Cathedrals How did the builders of medieval cathedrals, using simple hand tools, create glorious, soaring structures that still endure after more than eight centuries? NOVA investigated the ingenious and daring new engineering strategies that made these innovations possible. Even more intriguingly, Building the Great Cathedrals uncovers hidden clues to the secret religious symbolism encoded in these astonishing structures. This pursuit of sacred numbers sometimes pushed the architects to the brink of disaster. Senior Producer/Director: Gary Glassman Producer/Director: Scott Tiffany Coordinating Producer: Maureen Barden Lynch Content Producer: Tristan Barako NOVA Executive Producer: Paula S. Apsell Producer for ARTE: Christine LeGoff ARTE Executive Producer: Helen Coldefy OUTSTANDING NATURE PROGRAMMING Discovery Channel / First Life With David Attenborough From the fog-bound coastline of Newfoundland to the deserts of North Africa and the rainforests of Queensland, First Life with David Attenborough finds evidence in fossils and living animals of an extraordinary period in Earth’s history, half a billion years ago, when animals first appeared in the oceans. From the first eyes that saw, to the first predators that killed and the first legs that walked on land, these were creatures that evolved the traits and tools that allow all animals, including us, to survive to this day. This is a story that can only be told now because in the last few years, stunning fossil finds at sites across the world have transformed our understanding of the first life forms, and the latest technology allows us to recreate the first animals and their environments with photorealistic computer generated imagery (CGI). Host: David Attenborough Producer: Anthony Geffen Director: Martin Williams Executive Producers, Discovery Channel: Bill Howard, Susan Winslow Supervising Producers: Ruth Sessions, Olwyn Silvester Line Producer: Candice Martin Coordinating Producers, Discovery Channel: John Cavanaugh, John Terp Co-Producer: Kirsty Wilson Series Editor: Peter Miller PBS / Nature / Hummingbirds: Magic in the Air Hummingbirds are one of the most beloved creatures on the planet. The goal of Hummingbirds: Magic in the Air was to show that there is much more to the hummingbird’s world than people think and to turn the common perception of hummingbirds on its head by showing how new science and field-work are changing commonly held views of these little birds. Producer: Ann Johnson Prum Executive Producer: Fred Kaufman Series Producer: Bill Murphy Series Editor: Janet Hess PBS / Nature / Wolverine: Chasing the Phantom Few films have been made about these elusive carnivores. They are rare (numbering only a few hundred in the Lower 48 states), their habitat is remote, and they move over vast distances at a constant clip—20 miles a day is nothing to a wolverine, despite their ten-inch legs. Wolverines go where people do not and that is the prime reason why they are among the least studied—let alone filmed—animals on the planet. Producer: Gianna Savoie Executive Producer: Fred Kaufman Series Producer: Bill Murphy Supervising Producer: Janice Young Series Editor: Janet Hess
