Start your weekend off right with a fun and knowledgeable Stony Brook teacher on the trails learning about nature. Each day will have a special topic created to excite your child about the natural world. There will be crafts, activities and lots of laughter. So come and join the fun. This month’s themes: Trees in the Winter/Winter Wonderland. Ages 2.9 to 6 with a parent. Fee: $5m/$6nm per person per session. Family Tracking: Saturday, February 4, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. There are hints of life everywhere in the winter. Become an expert tracker and enjoy an afternoon of winter exploration in search of animal tracks and signs of deer, coyote, fox, fisher, otter, mink, rabbit, and mice. Hiking will be light to moderate. Dress in many layers and boots as the majority of the program will be outdoors. Fee: $7 adult/$6 child member; $9 adult/$7 child non-member. Sweets for the Tweets: Saturday, February 11, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Let’s make valentines for the birds! We will make edible treats for the birds with seeds, dried fruits, popcorn and other delicious items. You can either bring your treat home or hang it at Stony Brook. We will end the program with a short walk to look for birds along the pathways. Minimum age 5. Fee: $8m/ $10nm. Brunch with the Eagles: Sunday, February 12, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The open water of the Connecticut River is a great place to find Bald Eagles during the winter. The river attracts a variety of raptors, water fowl and other birds as they search for food during the wintertime. Join Doug Williams, Director at Stony Brook, and Karen Stein, Director at Moose Hill, for this captivating road trip to Connecticut. We will travel by van from Stony Brook with plenty of stops along the river to scope out the birds before heading to the Griswold Inn to partake of their traditional Hunt Brunch. After our meal we will walk down to the dock in Essex for one last look at the river before heading back home. Price includes brunch. Fee: $99m/ $119nm. Whooo’s Out There – Winter Wildlife Prowl: Saturday, February 18, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. We love to explore the fascinating world of Stony Brook after dark and each outing is a new adventure. You never know what you will find on a walk around the trails after sunset. We’ll start with a Power Point of the many creatures that roam the wetlands, fields, and forest after dark. We’ll take a look at what makes all of these critters so special, practice our owl hoots and then head out on the trail to look and listen. We sometimes hear, or even see owls, beavers, and other nocturnal animals. After our walk we’ll warm up with some hot chocolate. Fee: $8m/ $11nm. February Vacation Week Program: Tuesday, February 21 through Friday, February 24, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Your children don’t have to go far away to experience a new world or discover something new about themselves. Build a Backyard Birdhouse: Saturday, February 25, from 2 to 4 p.m. February is a perfect time to think and talk about how we can help bring some excitement to our neighborhoods. We will identify the housing needs of several species of birds (Bluebirds, Chickadees and Carolina wrens) that breed in our area. We can help by supplying a place for them to live. Learn what birds are looking for in a nesting site and then assemble a bird house to take home. Bird house building materials included in price. Minimum age 6. Child must be accompanied by an adult. Fee: $35m/ $39nm. Spontaneous Explorations (on snowshoes or not): call to be put on our list. We will invite you when it snows. Come on an exciting walk through the woods using this unique Native American invention. Beginners and experts welcome. If you have snowshoes, bring them; several pairs will be available for those who don’t. Other times we just get an itch to go birding. February 2017 Local Town Pages www.localtownpages.com Page 15 Representative Dooley Named to Task Force on Integrity in State and Local Government House Minority Leader Bradley H. Jones, Jr. (R-North Reading) has appointed Representative Shawn Dooley (R-Norfolk) to serve as his designee on theTask Force on Integrity in State and Local Government. Created at the request of House Speaker Robert A. DeLeo, the task force will conduct an investigation and study of the existing legal and regulatory framework governing the conduct of all state, county and municipal elected officials, as well as appointed public employees. The investigation will include a review of the state’s Conflict of Interest Law, the Financial Disclosure Law, and the regulations of the State Ethics Commission. “Representative Dooley brings a unique perspective to the task force, having served in government at both the local and state levels,” said Representative Jones. “Shawn’s experience and expertise will be an asset to the task force as it works to identify ways to clarify and strengthen the state’s ethics laws.” Representative Dooley commented, “I am so honored to be nominated to such an important commission although I will admit to being saddened that this is needed in our Commonwealth. Our elected and appointed officials should be beyond reproach when it comes to the public trust but unfortunately there are those who feel they are above the law and that the ends justifies the means. I applaud Speaker DeLeo for creating this task force and continuing to push for it until it became a reality. Greater transparency in our government will be one of the key aspects I will push for as well as harsher punishments for those who misuse their position for their own personal gain.” Representative Dooley is one of six state legislators serving on the 13-member task force, which is being co-chaired by the chairs of the House and Senate Ethics Committees and the House and Senate chairs of the Joint Committee on State Administration & Regulatory Oversight. Other members serving on the task force include Attorney General Maura Healey; the respective Chief Legal Counsels for the Governor, the Senate and the House; and three members with expertise on issues relating to ethics, public integrity or campaign finance who will be appointed by Governor Charlie Baker, Senate President Stanley Rosenberg and Speaker DeLeo. The task force will file a report of its findings with the Governor, Senate President and Speaker on or before March 15, 2017. Representative Dooley represents the Ninth Norfolk District, which is comprised of the towns of Norfolk, Plainville, Wrentham, Medfield, Millis and Walpole. He previously served as the Norfolk Town Clerk and as the Chairman of the Norfolk School Committee before winning a special election in January of 2014. Run Your Ads & Inserts With Us! Worried about packages being left on the front doorstep? Wrentham residents can designate the Fiske Library address for packages when ordering online. The librarians will sign for the items and hold them. Residents are advised to use online retailer tracking software to learn exactly when packages have arrived. To participate, residents must use their own name and the library’s address when placing orders. To pick up packages, bring in a library card that must match the information on the package, and sign the receipt to verify the item has been collected.
