Students in <strong>the</strong> Master <strong>of</strong> Science<br />

program obtain advanced practice<br />

preparation in one <strong>of</strong> three<br />

areas: health restoration/support;<br />

health promotion/protection; or<br />

health-care systems. All <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se<br />

areas <strong>of</strong> study are available at <strong>the</strong><br />

doctoral level.<br />

Health/Restoration Support<br />

Students in this area prepare as<br />

clinical nurse specialists. An area<br />

<strong>of</strong> specialization is achieved by<br />

<strong>the</strong> selection <strong>of</strong> a population <strong>of</strong><br />

choice across <strong>the</strong> life span. Also,<br />

students may choose to focus<br />

on <strong>the</strong> roles <strong>of</strong> educator, administrator,<br />

or some combination <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>se roles, such as clinical nurse<br />

specialist/educator.<br />

Health Promotion/Protection<br />

Students in this area may prepare<br />

for certifi cation as nurse practitioners<br />

in mental health, family, pediatric<br />

and geriatrics or as clinical<br />

nurse specialists in mental health,<br />

public health or school health.<br />

Health Care Systems<br />

This area prepares students for<br />

nursing leadership roles in acute<br />

care or community settings. In<br />

addition, students may include a<br />

minor in business administration.<br />

Master <strong>of</strong> Science in<br />

Nursing Progression<br />

Requirements<br />

The MS in nursing requires a<br />

minimum <strong>of</strong> 35 credit hours beyond<br />

<strong>the</strong> baccalaureate degree;<br />

<strong>the</strong> total hours vary according to<br />

<strong>the</strong> area <strong>of</strong> study. For satisfactory<br />

progress, students must maintain<br />

a GPA <strong>of</strong> 3.0 and be continually<br />

enrolled during fall and spring<br />

semesters until completion <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> degree.<br />

Thesis or Master’s Exam<br />

Each candidate must pass a final<br />

examination to demonstrate<br />

mastery <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fundamental principles<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> work included in <strong>the</strong><br />

course <strong>of</strong> study <strong>of</strong>fered for <strong>the</strong><br />

degree. This requirement may be<br />

fulfilled by completion <strong>of</strong> a <strong>the</strong>sis<br />

or <strong>the</strong> Master’s Exam (MS exam).<br />

The MS exam consists <strong>of</strong> a paper<br />

that should reflect <strong>the</strong> graduate<br />

student’s grasp and syn<strong>the</strong>sis<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> clinical and <strong>the</strong>oretical<br />

knowledge gained in <strong>the</strong> course<br />

<strong>of</strong> study.<br />

To satisfy requirements for <strong>the</strong><br />

MS, a student must:<br />

- Complete an approved program<br />

with a cumulative GPA <strong>of</strong> 3.0<br />

- Successfully defend a written<br />

<strong>the</strong>sis or complete <strong>the</strong> MS Exam<br />

Complete <strong>the</strong> program within a<br />

five-year period<br />

- Minimum TOEFL score:<br />

550/213/79-80 (Paper/Computer/<br />

Internet). Will accept IELTS scores<br />

for English pr<strong>of</strong>i ciency on a caseby-case<br />

basis. Besides <strong>the</strong> TOEFL,<br />

both <strong>the</strong> Test <strong>of</strong> Written English<br />

(TWE) and <strong>the</strong> Test <strong>of</strong> Spoken<br />

English (TSE) may be required.<br />

- Minimum GRE score: 1000 V+Q<br />

and 4.0 writing<br />

- <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>of</strong> an accredited baccalaureate<br />

program with a 3.2 minimum<br />

GPA (4.0 scale) or graduate<br />

<strong>of</strong> an accredited master’s program<br />

with a 3.5 minimum GPA<br />

- Doctoral students are admitted<br />

at various times during <strong>the</strong> academic<br />
