...MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR STAY IN ASHFORD & TENTERDEN
Pluckley is well worth a visit too, it’s reputed
to be the most haunted place in Britain and
was the setting for H E Bates’ The Darling
Buds of May.
Nearby Smarden has more than 100 listed
buildings – many feature in the village’s
heritage trail. It’s home to the Wildlife
Heritage Foundation Big Cat Sanctuary
where lions, tigers and leopards enjoy the
Kentish countryside.
Market Days
Visitors are spoilt for choice when it comes
to markets. In Ashford there is a Farmers’
Market on the first Sunday of each month
with seasonal themes, chef demonstrations
and plenty of delicious local produce to
sample. A regular Livestock Market also
takes place at Orbital Park just outside
the town.
Friday is Market Day in Tenterden with
stalls outside the historic town hall and in
the new Market Square. The farmers’ markets
in Rolvenden and Wye are two of the very
best in Kent.
History & Heritage
Head to Woodchurch and visit the Windmill
and the Village Life Museum. Tenterden
Museum reveals the story of the town’s
‘Cinque Ports’ connection, while close by
at Rolvenden you’ll discover the CM Booth
Collection of Historic Vehicles. Windmill
enthusiasts will find Stocks Mill, Kent’s tallest
post mill at Wittersham.
Celebrate Ashford’s railway heritage at the
Borough Museum or see corn being ground
at Willesborough Windmill. Here you’ll also
find displays relating to the town’s industrial
heritage. At Brook Agricultural Museum
there are wagons, reapers, ploughs and almost
everything from the horse drawn age.
Leisure Time
Enjoy the exciting leisure pools at Ashford
and Tenterden Leisure Centres or get sporty
at Ashford’s Julie Rose Stadium.
For those that prefer to be pampered,
excellent pool and spa facilities are on offer
at Eastwell Manor and London Beach while
Green Farm, in its tranquil rural setting in
Shadoxhurst, hosts wellness weekends. Head
to Challock for gliding or nearby Headcorn
Aerodrome for parachuting.
