The survey and data analysis was conducted by a team at George Mason University’s
Center for Social Science Research under direction of the Schar School, led by Delton
T. Daigle and Stefan Toepler. Sue Marx Smock, a member of the C&SN Advisory Board
and retired Professor and Dean at Wayne State University, played a key role in the survey
design and data analysis and provided essential advice throughout this study.
Primary research assistance was provided by Muhammad (Omar) Afzaal of Brown University;
his tireless dedication and enthusiasm were essential to this report. The assistance
of Meaghan Newkirk and Julia Cripps, C&SN interns, and external editor Emily
Bock are also greatly appreciated. Emma Paine’s skill and patience with graphic design
was also key to producing this report. Tim Reifschneider at Guidestar’s help in developing
the sample is also greatly appreciated.
The C&SN team, Kay Guinane and Andrea Hall, deserve special recognition. Their indefatigable
efforts advancing the interests of charities working in the areas of humanitarian
assistance, development, peacebuilding, human rights and civil liberties, among others,
have been an inspiration. They share in authorship of this report. As a result of their commitment
and foresight, a significant source of data on nonprofits working abroad—information
that policymakers had been calling for but that had previously been lacking—is
now available for exploration and discussion.
This report was made possible by a generous grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation.
