The survey and data analysis was conducted by a team at George Mason University’s
Center for Social Science Research under direction of the Schar School, led by Delton
T. Daigle and Stefan Toepler. Sue Marx Smock, a member of the C&SN Advisory Board
and retired Professor and Dean at Wayne State University, played a key role in the survey
design and data analysis and provided essential advice throughout this study.
Primary research assistance was provided by Muhammad (Omar) Afzaal of Brown University;
his tireless dedication and enthusiasm were essential to this report. The assistance
of Meaghan Newkirk and Julia Cripps, C&SN interns, and external editor Emily
Bock are also greatly appreciated. Emma Paine’s skill and patience with graphic design

The C&SN team, Kay Guinane and Andrea Hall, deserve special recognition. Their indefatigable
