Guard and Oedipus.
Guard takes Oedipus out of the dungeon and into a deserted courtyard.
GUARD: Come out, old man. Even though I’d do better to call you ruined man, for you are not of sufficient age to
be called old. From the grains of wisdom I have acquired I know that appearances might deceive. But, I cannot call
you Oedipus anymore, for Oedipus was the king. You are not the king. You are blind, though, maybe I can call you
– Blind man? It is better not to see, believe you me, the ruined court, the home torn down. Sit on the stone, lean
on this wall here, so I don’t have to hold you. Enjoy the sun, if there is anything you can enjoy. It has been nineteen
years since you last felt its rays. There, I turned forty seven the other day. You have one more. Neither young nor
old, although still too old already. I admit you are older, but that one year is not the reason, it makes no difference
in our age, the reason is this hell you’ve been through. You don’t know my voice, even though I was your shadow.
You swore me to be mute, a shadow has no voice, you told me then. Now, since you are not a king anymore, not
Oedipus anymore, I can talk to you, Blind man, for I am not a shadow anymore. And, now, everybody’s gone. You
and me are all that is left. Alone. So - who is to rule this wasteland? You can’t, I’d say. I guess you wouldn’t want to,
either. I’m not up to it. Let those who like power come. Again and again. It is true that you sinned, but, still, Jocasta
was not your mother. That was the lie of Tiresias.
Blinding light. The end.
(The final scene of the Lie of Tiresias)
