DESCRIPTIONS KEYNOTE PRESENTATIONS 8:45 am - 10:15 am Past & Present EMDR: National Influences on Local Community Presenter: Seaghan Coleman, LCSWR This presentation will review the national emergence of EMDR and address the local acceptance by and impact on the WNY community. Ongoing issues in the EDMR community will be covered, including the status of EMDR within agencies and insurance companies, emerging EMDR applications and protocols, and the development of more specific criteria for EMDR Certification. Learning objectives: 1) understand the past development and growth of EMDR and impact on local therapy community; 2) obtain an update on the status of EDMR in agencies and insurance companies; 3) learn about emerging EMDR protocols and applications. Future of EMDR in WNY Presenter: Iana Lal, LMHC This presentation will highlight the strength and depth of the EMDR community in WNY, and future goals of moving toward increased integration amongst clinical and non-clinical service providers in areas such as sexual offending, refugee resettlement, perinatal loss, motor vehicle accidents, postconcussion syndrome and integrative family therapy. This session highlights future needs of practitioners at every level in order to provide consistency and awareness among providers to understand EMDR applications to provide appropriate referrals and education in the best interest of clients and fidelity to AIP Theory. Learning objectives: 1) learn at least 3 up and coming areas of need and growth within the community; 2) identify area groups, resources and procedures for obtaining and maintaining consultation in order to sustain best practices of EMDR. WORKSHOP SESSIONS (A): 10:30 am -12:00 noon EMDR & Motivational Interviewing Presenter: Melissa Babiarz, LMHC, CASAC The workshop is designed to facilitate exposure to the use Motivational Interviewing as part of engagement in EMDR therapy as well as an understanding of the overall spirit of MI. The workshop will also provide hands on exposure to the use of general MI skills (OARS) with EMDR therapy and their application with goal setting and cognitive interweave. Learning objectives: 1) recognize the fundamental spirit and principles of MI; 2) understand empathetic counseling skills (OARS) and their role in engagement, goal setting and cognitive interweave; 3) direct practice and experience with OARS with engagement, goal setting and cognitive interweave. EDMR Refresher Presenter: Seaghan Coleman, LCSWR This presentation will involve a review of AIP and its role in conceptualization and planning; the essentials of good History gathering; the importance of resourcing in Preparation; effective target set up in Assessment Phase; managing the elements of Desensitization; appropriate Installation and Body Scan, and procedures for good Closure of complete and incomplete sessions; and the Importance of fidelity to the Shapiro model of EMDR. Learning objectives: 1) understand AIP as the guiding principle of EMDR; 2) review and clarify the procedures of the eight phases of EMDR reprocessing; 3) explain the value and importance of maintaining fidelity to the Standard Protocol. WORKSHOP SESSIONS (B): 1:00 pm -2:30 pm EMDR in the Agency Setting Presenters: Margaret Gibb, LMHC & Stacey Stevens, LMHC Using EMDR in an agency or multidisciplinary setting involves not only meeting the needs of the client(s), but also providing e d u c a t i o n a n d c o m m u n i c a t i o n t o Caregivers, Colleagues, Supervisors and Ancillary Providers such as Schools, Attorneys, Medical Professionals and the Courts. This workshop serves to provide an overview of best practices of use of EMDR in supervision, case collaboration, note taking and communication to serve our clients. Learning objectives: 1) identify best practices for effective communication to aid in the demystification of EMDR for caregivers, medical, legal, or ancillary providers in an effort to improve quality of care for clients; 2) learn strategies to effectively integrate EMDR in a clinic setting with regard to note-taking, record keeping, collaborations, supervision, time/billing constraints and case management; 3) identify and anticipate potential areas which may require additional care planning in order to maintain the safety of clients and will develop skills to counteract and troubleshoot these areas effectively. When and How to Use the Multidimensional Inventory of Dissociation (MID) Presenters: Mary Nixon, LCSWR & Sarah Smith, LCSWR Dissociation is a common experience for clients exposed to trauma. The Adaptive Information Processing model (AIP) lays the groundwork to understand how Dissociative Disorders occur and why not always evident. In EMDR therapy, it is recommended that clinicians screen for dissociation in Phase I of treatment in order to determine how to proceed with EMDR. The DES –II is often used as a screening tool rather than an assessment. There is evidence that the DES-II is not a diagnostic instrument but rather a screening. (Paulsen, 2011) and Chevetz (cited by Steinberg, M. 1993). It is helpful to be aware of other assessment tools such as the Multidimensional Inventory of Dissociation (MID).
