In<strong>for</strong>mation from the Agriculture <strong>and</strong> Horticulture<br />

Development Board Variety Survey can be used to give an<br />

indication of the relative importance of different end-use<br />

markets in each region of the UK.<br />

North East <strong>and</strong> Yorkshire<br />

For wheat, breadmaking quality varieties generally tend to<br />

be more popular in the East, while distilling varieties will be<br />

of greater importance further north.<br />

For barley, spring malt varieties <strong>for</strong> brewing will be in<br />

greater dem<strong>and</strong> in the South, while further north, malt<br />

distilling varieties will be more appropriate.<br />

North West <strong>and</strong> Wales<br />

Eastern<br />

Regional trials data<br />

The <strong>AHDB</strong> Cereals & Oilseeds Variety Selection Tool allows<br />

users to navigate the latest variety trials data <strong>and</strong> make<br />

comparisons – based on location-specific in<strong>for</strong>mation – to<br />

help identify the most promising winter wheat <strong>and</strong> winter<br />

barley varieties <strong>for</strong> their unique situations.<br />

West Midl<strong>and</strong>s<br />

East Midl<strong>and</strong>s<br />

By selecting geographical location, rotational position, soil<br />

type or sowing date, the tool visualises trials data in chart<br />

<strong>for</strong>mat <strong>for</strong> easy comparison of varieties. By selecting a<br />

'district' (based on regional climates defined by the Met<br />

Office), trial data from other areas are excluded, potentially<br />

making the results more<br />

regionally relevant.<br />
