The Certifi cation Body, JTLimited is accredited to
IEC/ISO 17024:2003 - Competency of Persons who
Work in Explosive Atmospheres. The qualifi cation is
based upon the IEC Standards, primarily IEC 60079:
Parts 10; 14 & 17.
Explosive atmospheres occur in onshore and
offshore petrochemical plants and refi ning plants.
They are also found in distilleries, paint spraying
plants, fl ourmills, woodworking machine plants,
biomass, chipboard and MDF pre-production areas.
Failure to ensure safe working practices in these
circumstances could result in the ignition of
explosive gases or dust clouds leading to injury or
even fatalities and the destruction of capital asset
investments damaged by explosive blasts and fi re.
Underpinning knowledge in place, and that they
have the ability to apply the knowledge to safely
install, inspect and maintain equipment unique to
those areas.

Course Overview
The ATEX Directive legislation underlines the
need for practitioners in potentially explosive
environments or hazardous areas to be
competent. It is implemented through regulations
7 and 11 of DSEAR - Dangerous Substances and
Explosive Regulations.
This unit is established as underpinning knowledge
and is only to give the individual an overview
of the requirements of working safely in an
explosive atmosphere.
Who should attend this course and why?
The course is aimed at senior management,
electrical supervisors, project engineers, contract
managers and non-practitioners involved in
hazardous area work activity, to enable a greater
appreciation of the hazards associated with
working in explosive atmospheres and the
promotion of safe working practices.
CompEx Ex01 to Ex04/CompEx
Ex01R to Ex04R Refresher
Course Overview
The underpinning knowledge and practical
assessment programme is provided for personnel
who undertake the physical installation and
assembly of ‘Ex’ equipment and, who perform
preventive maintenance and inspections on
installed equipment.
Who should attend this course and why?
The course is aimed at electrical and instrument
engineers, supervisors and technicians who need
to develop and demonstrate their competency
in the selection, installation, inspection and
maintenance of electrical apparatus in potentially
explosive atmospheres.
The CompEx Refresher course must be taken every
5 years to re-validate your competency.
CompEx Mechanical Ex11
(including CompEx Foundation Ex F)
Course Overview
This course determines the core competency of
mechanical practitioners working in potentially
fl ammable atmospheres.
The course covers the standards for the manufacture
and installation of mechanical equipment and their
protection concepts, which may be exposed to a
potentially fl ammable atmosphere.
Delivery is over 3 days and consists of the CompEx
Foundation Module (Ex F), a mechanical hazardous
awareness course with a written examination and
fi nally overall core competency is validated with a
practical assessment on mechanical equipment.
Ex11 meets the competency requirements for EN
13463 Parts 1, 5 & 6 for operatives working with
mechanical equipment.
Who should attend this course and why?
The course is aimed to give mechanical engineers,
supervisors and technicians an understanding of
electrical and mechanical hazards that can give rise
to danger in the workplace. Individuals will have
the opportunity to demonstrate their competency
in the preparation, installation, inspection and
maintenance of mechanical equipment in potentially
explosive atmospheres and hazardous areas.
CompEx Dust Ex05 & Ex06
Course Overview
These units are used to extend the competence for
craftsmen working on Electrical Apparatus for use in
the Presence of Combustible Dusts.
Who should attend this course and why?
Electrical and instrument engineers, supervisors
and technicians who need to develop and
demonstrate their competency for working on
Electrical Apparatus for use in the Presence of
Combustible Dusts.

Virtual Process Control Room
The Virtual Process Control Room (VPCR)
is a process simulator that utilises
dynamic software that delivers interactive,
practical training and assessment. The
simulator develops operator skills and
preliminary understanding through to
advanced capability in incident control
and emergency response.
How does it work?
The most important feature of this specialist facility
is that it offers a range of simulated situations in a
real-time environment. The VPCR facility replicates
the cutting edge technology used in chemical and
process plants. Touchscreen keyboards, networked
stations, full sound system with background
noise, fl are stacks and CCTV cameras with high
resolution voice and sound video recording, all
serve to heighten the level of realism for the
course delegate.
This allows the individual to learn from an
interactive experience under controlled conditions.
The customised approach ensures operators and
control room personnel possess the technical
competence, confi dence and knowledge required
to switch to maximum performance should an
incident ever arise.
What are the benefits?

IOSH Managing Safely
Competency Assessment
Who should attend this course
and why?
This course is suitable for Managers and Supervisors
in any sector and any organisation. The purpose
of the course is to gain up-to-date knowledge and
know the practical actions that are required to take
to handle health and safety within their teams.
Aims
To ensure that safety requirements are appreciated by
people employed as line managers and to enable them
to review their own departmental systems for safety,
introducing new controls or implementing changes as
appropriate to make the department work more safely.
At the end of the course you will be able to:
■ Explain working safely
■ Explain the component parts of a recognised
safety management system such as HSG65 or
BS 8800 and appreciate the role of risk

Who should attend these courses
and why?
These courses are ideal for lower-risk work
environments such as offi ces, shops and/or
organisations with fewer than 100 employees.
For regulatory purposes, successful candidates will
be able to act as a fi rst aider in the workplace.
Employers are required to provide a number of
suitably trained fi rst aiders that is appropriate for
their size and circumstances. That person must
have undergone recognised training and earned
the appropriate qualifi cations to carry out the role
of fi rst-aider.
