Before <strong>the</strong> coming oí <strong>the</strong> European to Africa, a great<br />
civilization flourished in Nigeria which produced a<br />
remarkable bronze art. The Kingdoms <strong>of</strong> Benin and<br />
Yorubaland and <strong>the</strong> city <strong>of</strong> Ife are rightly famous for<br />
<strong>the</strong> many masterpieces in bronze which have come<br />
IBs», down to us, and some <strong>of</strong> which are shown here. Left,<br />
- casting found at Benin <strong>of</strong> a huntsman returning from<br />
"3 <strong>the</strong> chase with his dog and carrying a dead waterbuck.<br />

Í ing, found in 1938, with seventeen brass heads, prob<br />
ably represents an early Oni (divine king) <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> citystate<br />
<strong>of</strong> Ife. Regalia, with exception <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> crown, are<br />
like those used by modern Onis at <strong>the</strong>ir coronation.<br />
