With over thirty-eight combined years in the aviation industry, 

UAS Linemen Keith Futscher, Tom Dieterich, John Doll, and 

Dave Stoeckle are the heart and soul behind the morning and 

evening operations at Lunken Airport. From fueling and de-icing 

planes to loading passenger’s baggage, they are responsible for 

making sure our operation is ready to go on a daily basis. 

KEITH has been with UAS two years, including eight years 

at Lunken. He enjoys the small company atmosphere and the 

comradery of his co-workers. Keith’s interests are endurance 

horse racing, water/snow skiing and farming. 

JOHN has been with UAS for three years, fifteen years 

overall in the field. You may have met John, he also is one of our 

shuttle van drivers. Keep an eye out for him next time you are 

taking the complementary shuttle downtown. John’s hobbies 

include reading and walking his dogs in the woods. 

TOM has been employed with UAS now for two years. His 

favorite part of the job? “The people, my coworkers, are the best 

from top to bottom,” Tom says. “Love seeing the passengers 

return at night with a smile on their face, telling me to have a 

nice evening on they’re way out the door.” Tom enjoys playing 

softball and riding his motorcycle. 

DAVE has been with UAS 

for two and half years, thirteen 

overall spent in aviation. Dave 

says the best part of his job are 

“the amazing coworkers and their 

dedication to the quality of their 

work and customer satisfaction.” 

Dave is also a volunteer Firefighter/ 

Paramedic and enjoys working on 

home improvement projects. As if 

that didn’t keep him busy enough, 

currently two of his daughters have 

upcoming weddings, one in May

WITH THE CONSTANT PRESSURE 

and focus of many organizations around profit 

margin, revenue growth, value to customers 

and leadership in their respective market, 

it seems one bullet point is often forgotten: 

How to be a good steward in the community 

in which they operate. And if that point is not 

part of a company’s leadership mission, it 

certainly won’t flow down to empowering its 

employees to have a similar mindset. 

In the first 15 years of my career, I 

had the opportunity to work with many 

organizations. Reflecting back, it is no 

wonder that many of these companies 

struggled to truly establish themselves in 

our community. Many of them achieved 

financial success to some extent, but were 

seldom known as a company that was 

impacting the community that surrounded 

them. Community outreach was rarely 

discussed within these organizations or the 

leaders in my own company. 

As a business development manager, my 

goal was focused 100% on closing deals. I had 

personally volunteered at local nonprofits 

such as Habitat for Humanity, NCTA and 

Apparo (which I will talk about in more 

detail shortly). However, it was always by my 

own choosing and never part of an overall 

corporate mission statement. It wasn’t until 

my most recent job, at DataChambers, that 

this perspective changed. 

Five years ago, I became a business 

development manager for DataChambers. 

At that time, the company had some brand 

awareness in the Charlotte market. However, 

I was tasked with understanding why we 

had awareness, but not recognition. For 

me, the difference was that people knew 

about DataChambers, but didn’t understand 

who we were. I decided to approach a good 

friend, who was working for one of the most 

well recognized construction companies in 

Charlotte and the region. I asked him what 

he and his company did to create such great 

brand recognition, as well as their positive 

community presence. His response to me 

was simple: Community Outreach.

The key component of community 

outreach is service. In the business 

community, many people start the day 

thinking about how they can perform their 

job better in order to serve either their 

employer or a client, while focusing on 

personal gain. I’m not disparaging this type 

of self service. However, I believe that it is 

short sighted – a missed opportunity for 

them, their company, and the community 

they work in. True service happens when 

you stop focusing inward, and start focusing 

outward. In other words, it’s about putting 

those around you before yourself. When you 

are able to do that with honest intentions and 

true passion, you will find that the breadth 

of people in your community you can reach 

and influence will greatly expand. 

As I evaluated how to focus my service 

efforts outward, not only to help the 

community in which I worked, but also to 

share the technology industry I am passionate 

about and support the message, mission and 

vision of the company I work for, I discovered 

one of the strongest nonprofit organizations 

in the Charlotte community: Apparo. 

ABOUT APPARO 

Apparo helps local nonprofits leverage 

technology to create positive social change 

in the Charlotte community. Philanthropy 

is woven into Charlotte’s corporate fabric, 

with employees who are eager to support a 

cause and impact the community using their 

skills. Nonprofits are devoted and purposedriven 

but often lack the resources to reach 

more people in need. Connecting nonprofits 

to corporate volunteers gives them access to 

IT education and training, and affordable 

IT solutions that they need to effectively 

achieve their missions. 

Since its inception in 2003 (then known 

as Npower Charlotte Region), Apparo 

has supported over 350 nonprofits in our 

community, provided over $7.8 million 

in technology solutions and $1.8 million 

in technology sponsorships. In the past 

12 months they have donated over 6,600 

hours in advice and guidance, and provided 

4,050 hours of volunteer service to over 110 

nonprofit agencies. Below are two brief case 

studies of nonprofits Apparo has helped 

support.

APPARO CASE STUDY: 

OMITT & DUKE ENERGY 

OMITT Trade School needed a 

partner to provide hardware, software, 

and configuration services for a computer 

training lab at the OMITT facility. OMITT 

is a non-profit in the greater Charlotte, 

NC area that provides skilled based 

training programs with certification 

such as HVAC, Fork-Lift operation, and 

electrical. Their typical student is the 

unemployed, underemployed and the 

previously incarcerated, who want to work, 

but are not trained for the work available. 

OMITT addresses core issues including 

personal accountability, communication 

skills, teamwork, motivation, passion in the 

workplace, and a vision for the future. 

OMITT’s vision was to create a 

computer literacy classroom for training as 

well as GED testing/ certification. To make 

this vision a reality required hardware for 

the eventual students as well as hardware 

and software for the four staff members to 

replace their then eight-year old computers. 

Finally, the technical skills to configure 

services for the computer training lab onsite 

at the OMITT facility would need to be 

found. 

Duke Energy’s technology department 

is passionate about technology and enabling 

efficiency through technology. Their staff 

includes skilled professionals with vast IT 

and professional skills to make this happen, 

but they had no way to know that the need 

was there. This is where Apparo stepped 

in. Apparo has relationships with both the 

nonprofits and corporations throughout 

the greater Charlotte area. Apparo made the 

introductions and facilitated the delivery of 

the new classroom for OMITT. 

The resulting partnership helped 

OMITT in many ways, as well as their 

students. The new classroom allowed 


OMITT to reach new students who needed 

access to technology in order to initiate and 

complete online certifications. It helped 

the teaching staff be able to better track the 

results, and collaborate together to deliver 

the needed coursework more swiftly and 

effectively. The improved tools for OMITT’s 

staff have allowed them to focus more easily 

on their jobs and improving the lives of 

those they serve. OMITT Trade School 

can now increase their fundraising, expand 

the reach of their programs, deliver their 

programs more efficiently and share their 

services more broadly. 

APPARO CASE STUDY: 

CRISIS ASSISTANCE 

MINISTRY & STALWART 

Crisis Assistance Ministry (CAM) 

provides assistance and advocacy for people 

in financial crisis, helping them move 

toward self-sufficiency. CAM meets the 

needs of some of Charlotte’s most vulnerable 

citizens at the very moment of potential 

homelessness or seriously destabilizing 

crisis. Crisis Assistance Ministry was in 

need of a security assessment plan for their 

business technology as well as for those 

processes that were currently manual in 

nature. Client’s personal information was 

obtained via paper-based forms and then 

entered into CAM systems. Crisis Assistance 

Ministries needed help with defining their 

data security risks and creating a plan/ 

roadmap to implement better security 

measures for both manual and network 

processes. 

Again, CAM had no idea how to find 

the assistance it needed. Apparo reached out 

to one of its corporate partners, Stalwart, 

a company that provides IT security, 

managed services, cloud solutions and 

secure IT architectures to their customers. 

Stalwart jumped at the chance to engage 

its employees in this type of meaningful 

community engagement. They studied 

CAM and worked to create a list of 53 items 

for improvement. As of February 2017, 

about half of those 53 have been improved 

and made secure. The rest are targeted 

for completion and some being put into 

CAM’s budget for the next fiscal year. This 

security project allowed Crisis Assistance 

Ministries to uphold their goal of treating

funding sources required a certain level of 

data security that this project has helped 

Crisis Assistance Ministry to achieve. As 

you can see, Apparo is directly affecting 

how nonprofits can more efficiently and 

effectively support their mission statement 

through investment in technology. 

When a staff has the empowerment 

of an employer to focus on community 

engagements, it connects the goals of the 

company to the goals of its employees 

which connects them to the community 

they work in. And it creates a powerful 

force for positive change. Apparo has 

not only allowed me to fulfill my passion 

– around the nonprofit community 

and technology – it has also led me to 

create relationships with IT leaders in 

the Charlotte community who have likeminded 

passions for community outreach. 

By putting my efforts into understanding 

how the community I work in can be better 

served through volunteer work, I can now 

show my company the benefits through 

possible business relationships as well. In 

my opinion it’s all about the priority and 

the passion. 

Those of us who have good jobs that 

support ourselves and our families also 

must understand that there are individuals 

and families in our own backyards that are 

much less fortunate. If we can spend time 

making their lives better, it will make the 

community we live and work in a much 

better place. Focus outward first and the 

help you give to those around you, both 

personally and professionally, will make 

your life that much richer. n

I REMEMBER WELL THE FIRST TIME 

I visited Atlanta. The exact date was August 

1st, 1978. The Braves had just snapped Pete 

Rose’s forty-four game hitting streak the 

night before. I had watched the game from 

my apartment on Richland Avenue in Athens 

Ohio and was pretty distraught over the 

streak ending. My roommate and I made a 

spur-of-the-moment decision to jump in my 

truck and head to Atlanta to see Pete begin 

a new streak. It was total lunacy. We left late 

at night, got lost a few times, then stopped 

at every Howard Johnson’s restaurant we 

passed and ordered fried clams. We arrived 

at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium with time 

to spare and watched Pete get four hits. We 

skipped the fried clams on the way back to 

Athens and all in all, it was less than a 24-hour 

round trip. 

If this were today, I’d have made a week 

out of it because Atlanta has a lot to offer. It 

should. It’s a big city and boasts the ninth 

largest metropolitan area in the United 

States, with over 5.7 million residents. For 

comparison, Greater Cincinnati has 2.1 

million people. Here are some of the things 

you can do during a visit. This is by no 

means intended to be a complete list as that 

would take this entire issue of Ultimate Air 

Magazine... and then some.

and entertainment venues along the street’s 

long course. It is also a center for the Arts 

and is home to the Woodruff Arts Center, the 

High Museum of Art, The Atlanta Symphony, 

and the Alliance Theatre. Margaret Mitchell, 

author of Gone with the Wind, lived in a 

boarding house on Peachtree Street while 

writing her masterpiece. The book was 

published in 1936 and released as the film 

classic in 1939, debuting on Peachtree Street 

at Lowe’s Theatre. Tragically, Ms. Mitchell 

died in 1949 when she was crossing Peachtree 

Street, killed by a speeding driver. 

While exploring Peachtree Street, make 

sure you visit the renowned Fox Theatre. 

World famous, the theatre was built by the 

Atlanta Shriner’s Organization. It was leased 

to movie mogul William Fox and opened 

on Christmas Day 1928 with the premier 

of Steamboat Willie, Walt Disney’s first 

cartoon featuring Mickey Mouse. The Great 

Depression brought tough times and the 

Fox was sold at auction for just $75,000, a 

fraction of the $3,000,000 it had cost to build. 

It stumbled along over the years, ultimately 

failing like many big theatres nationwide. The 

wrecking ball was imminent, but the citizenry 

of Atlanta came to the rescue, raising the 

$3,000,000 needed to save and renovate the 

Fox. It reopened in 1975 and today thrives, 

hosting over two-hundred fifty events a year. 

ATLANTA IS ALSO FAMED FOR ITS 

Georgia Aquarium, located on Baker Street. 

You may have been to Aquariums before 

but this one is unique. Sure, there are lots of 

exhibits and thousands of fish to see. But here 

is where it gets a little different. A lot different. 

Start with their sleep-over program. Bring 

your sleeping bag and spend the night. This 

program is open to families, youth groups, 

corporate outings – just about everybody. 

The Aquarium also boasts several interactive 

Animal Encounters where you physically 

mingle with dolphins, penguins, and sea 

otters. There is also a program where you 

can don a wet suit and wade waist deep into 

a beluga whale pool. The ultimate experience 

is their Journey with Gentle Giants. If you 

are a certified SCUBA diver, you can dive 

with manta rays and whale sharks, the largest 

fish species on earth. If you’re not SCUBA 

certified, it’s no problem. Aquarium personnel

research and conservation and to the rescue of endangered loggerhead 

sea turtles, with the expressed commitment to return them to their 

natural habitat. 

If you are a sports fan, Atlanta boasts professional teams in all 

three major sports: the Braves (baseball), the Hawks (basketball), and 

the Falcons (football). If you visit, there’s a good chance that one of 

them will be playing while you are there. Since 2014, Atlanta has also 

been the home of The College Football Hall of Fame and Museum. A 

94,000 square foot facility, the Hall pays homage to stars of the college 

game. There are 987 players inducted in the Hall with 306 schools 

represented. This might seem like a huge number of inductees, but 

since the first college football game was played on November 6, 1869 

between the New Jersey Tigers, now Princeton, and the Rutgers 

Queensmen, there have been over five million student athletes to suit 

up. Just .0002% have earned admission into the Hall of Fame. 

Tribute is also made to over 200 coaches that have helped make 

the game great and there are numerous displays and presentations 

which let you relive memories of your favorite coaches, players, and

the legends that preceded them. An interesting display is the threestory 

high helmet display. There are 774 colleges and universities that 

field football teams and the wall displays a helmet for each school. And 

in case you are wondering who won that first game, Rutgers prevailed 

by a score of 6 to 4.

spending a day at the Atlanta Botanical Garden. This is a beautiful, 

30 acre exhibition whose mission is to “develop and maintain plant 

collections for the purpose of display, education, conservation, 

research, and enjoyment.” There are three main areas. The indoor 

Fuqua Orchid Center features the High Elevation House, a display of 

mountain orchids and diverse plant life as found in the Cloud Forest of 

the Peruvian Andes. Visitors love the man-made waterfall, emblematic 

of rushing waters that you will find in the Andes highlands. 

A second indoor attraction is the Fuqua Conservatory. It features 

several distinct climatic regions. The Tropical Region reenacts the 

10% of the earth closest to the equator where over 50% of all plant 

and animal species are found. The Desert Region displays a variety of 

succulents native to the island of Madagascar and southern Africa. The 

Fuqua Orchid Center and the Conservatory are named after Dorothy 

Chapman Fuqua, a prominent Atlanta philanthropist and lifelong 

friend of nature. The third area is the Outdoor Collection, home to 

a variety of gardens featuring roses, edible vegetables, hydrangeas, 

palms, water plants, summer bulbs, and the incredible Japanese

IF YOU DON’T MIND A SHORT DRIVE, 

visit Stone Mountain Park in DeKalb County, 

just east of Atlanta. It features the largest basrelief 

sculpture in the world. Carved into the 

side of the mountain are effigies of southern 

Civil War legends Jefferson David, Robert E. 

Lee, and Stonewall Jackson. The sculpture 

measures 90 x 190 feet and is recessed 42 

feet into the mountain, approximately 400 

feet up from the base of the rock. There 

is a misconception that Stone Mountain 

is a solid granite rock, when it is actually 

igneous in origin and is made up mostly of 

quartz menzonite. It rises 825 feet above the 

surrounding area and was formed by magma 

boiling up miles below the surface eons ago. 

There is some controversy about the 

sculpture being a monument to those that 

attempted to secede from the Union, but 

there can be no doubt that it is an amazing 

work of art. The park also includes 15 miles of 

hiking trails and the most popular is the onemile 

trail leading to the top of the mountain. 

Don’t worry though. It does not involve 

scaling the mountain but is rather a gradual 

climb up the shallowest slope. The way down 

is much quicker and far easier, as long as you 

are not squeamish about heights. This way is 

via the Swiss-built Skyride, an enclosed cable 

gondola that swings you out blindly over the 

face of the cliff before slowly returning you to 

solid ground over 800 feet below.

office of 1976-1981. Perhaps the most unique 

item on display is a replica of the Crown of St. 

Stephen, or the “Holy Crown of Hungary”. At 

the end of World War Two, the royal crown 

was transferred by Hungary to the U.S. Army 

to keep it from falling into the hands of the 

approaching Soviet army. It remained in 

protective custody here in the United States 

at the U.S. Gold Depository at Fort Knox 

Kentucky until 1978 when President Carter 

returned it to its home country. Hungary 

presented a replica to President Carter in 

1998 and it is on permanent display at the 

Carter Museum, a reminder of Hungarian 

appreciation and respect.

Those of us who live in the Midwest enjoy 

four distinct seasons. Spring! Summer! 

Fall! Winter! Each season has its own 

personality and each has its good points 

and not so good points. While there are 

definite advantages to living where it’s 

sunny and warm all year long, I still enjoy 

the change of pace each season brings – 

especially spring. 

WINTER: Unless you own a ski business 

like Perfect North Slopes, you have to hate 

winter in the Midwest. It’s dark, dreary, 

cold, and waaaaaaaaaaaay too long. And I 

(like most sane adults) hate the snow – even 

though it looks pretty when you’re looking 

at it from inside your house. The best part 

of winter is going to the Caribbean where 

it’s warm and sunny all year long. 

SUMMER: In the Midwest, summer 

is the time of the year for F-U-N: vacations, 

water parks, swimming pools, golf, 

baseball, cookouts, more water, outdoor 

concerts, summer festivals, and on and on. 

FALL: The leaves changing in autumn are 

pretty and something people in other parts 

of the world don’t get to enjoy. The days 

getting cooler makes for a nice break from 

the often unrelenting heat and humidity of 

summer. And if you love sports as much as 

I do, football season starts and basketball 

and hockey are right around the corner. 

SPRING: As you can probably tell from 

the title of this article, as far as I’m concerned 

spring is the BEST. After a long 

dreary winter flowers are in bloom, trees 

start to blossom, the golf courses get busy, 

baseball season starts, and its time for the 

Triple Crown! 

About the only thing to hate in the

Technically the 2017 Major League 

Baseball season starts on Sunday, April 2. 

There will be three games that day: the 2016 

World Series champion Chicago Cubs will 

take on the Cardinals (The Cincinnati Reds’ 

arch rivals) in St. Louis, the San Francisco 

Giants visit the Arizona Diamondbacks, 

and the New York Yankees will open against 

the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field. But 

officially Opening Day is on the following 

Monday, April 3, with nine division matchups 

included on a 13-game slate. 

For Reds fans like me baseball season 

REALLY kicks off at noon on Opening Day 

with the start of the annual Findlay Market 

Opening Day Parade. Each spring since 1920 

this parade has made its way from Findlay 

Market in Over-the-Rhine through the 

streets of downtown Cincinnati. Hundreds of 

people take the day off work or school to line 

the streets and watch the parade pass by. And 

if you don’t have a ticket to the big game, you 

can watch it on a giant TV screen on Fountain 

Square with a few thousand other fans. This 

year the Reds will be taking on the Philadelphia 

Phillies on Opening Day at Cincinnati’s 

Great American Ballpark at 4:10 PM. 

THE TRIPLE CROWN 

The Triple Crown of Thoroughbred 

Racing (or simply The Triple Crown), includes 

three races for three-year-old Thoroughbred 

horses. Winning all three of these 

Thoroughbred horse races is considered the 

greatest accomplishment in Thoroughbred 

racing. The first (and in my humble opinion 

the greatest) race is the Kentucky Derby, 

run over the 1-1⁄4 mile (2.0 km) track at 

Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. It is 

the longest continually held sporting event in 

America, and it is one of the most prestigious 


horse races in the world. 20 horses compete 

in the Kentucky Derby, which is a larger field 

size than most horse races; where on average 

8 horses race against one another. Those 20 

horses must have first competed in a series 

of 35 races that take place at tracks across the 

country and the world. Points are awarded to 

the top 4 horses that finish in each of those 

35 races, and the 20 horses with the most 

points earn a spot in the Kentucky Derby. The 

Kentucky Derby winning purse is $2 million. 

The second race in the Triple Crown is 

the Preakness Stakes, run over the 1-3⁄16 mile 

track at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, 

Maryland. The third and final race is the 

Belmont Stakes, run over the 1-1⁄2 mile dirt 

track, the longest in U.S. thoroughbred racing, 

at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York, 

just east of the New York City borough of 

Queens in Nassau County, Long Island. n

Stewart Iron Works is part of the American Experience. by Rick Pawlak 

WHILE TODAY’S PRODUCTION 

environment is dominated by multiaxis 

machines, welding robots, and lean 

manufacturing concepts, there is a 155-yearold 

company in Covington, Kentucky that 

still produces some of the finest ornamental 

iron structures in the nation by hand, a 

proud and timeless tradition passed down 

from generations of German-American 

craftsman. 

Stewart Iron Works’ ornamental metal 

artistry can be found on some of the 

most iconic structures in North America, 

including The White House, U.S. House of 

Representatives, the gates of the Panama 

Canal, New York’s Central Park, the Alaskan 

Governor’s Mansion, the Smithsonian, 

and historical cemeteries throughout the 

American South. 

The history behind the company is 

an important chapter in the American 

Experience. Richard (R.C.) Stewart Sr., a 

skilled blacksmith, founded Stewart Iron 

Works in Covington – then a bustling 

industrial city just across the Ohio River 

from Cincinnati – in 1862 with the intent of 

producing iron fences. By 1886, the company 

had grown to more than 150 employees who 

were producing ornamental iron fences and 

structures throughout the United States. 

The second generation – Wallace and 

Robert Stewart – re-joined the family 

business near the turn of the century after 

losing their own ornamental iron company 

in a horrific fire in Wichita, Kansas. By 

1900, Stewart was producing several types of 

ornamental iron structures including fences, 

gates, reservoir vases, lamps, grills, jails, 

office partitions, window guards, fountains 

and more. 

The company’s product and skills were 

showcased at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. 

Louis, when it received the grand prize and 

gold medal in construction. At the time, 

Stewart Iron Works was recognized as the 

largest manufacturer of ornamental iron 

structures in the world. 

As the third generation of Stewarts 

grew older, they began to marry into other 

prominent manufacturing families and 

branching into different endeavors. In 1912, 

Stewart Iron Works began manufacturing 

trucks and eventually began supplying the 

United States Army during World War I. At 

its peak, Stewart Iron Works was producing 

approximately 100 trucks annually for the 

Army’s war effort.

AFTER WORLD WAR I, the domestic market 

exploded for residential fencing, estate gates, 

and high end interior ornamental railing 

products. As a result, the 1920s became the 

golden age for Stewart Iron works, which 

by then employed more than 3,000 workers. 

During this time, Stewart began selling 

ornamental iron fencing through the Sears 

& Roebuck Catalog, a move that helped push 

distribution and production to record levels. 

When the Great Depression hit, demand 

plummeted and the Stewart family diversified 

by focusing on its jail division, a booming 

industry during the years of gangsters and 

prohibition. Stewart jail cells housed some 

of the most infamous criminals including, 

Al Capone, James “Whitey” Bulger, Mickey 

Cohen, George “Machine Gun” Kelly, David 

Berkowitz, and James Earl Ray. Stewart 

Iron Works jail cells and locking gates can 

be found in some of the country’s most 

notorious prisons, including Alcatraz, Sing 

Sing, and Leavenworth. Ironically, Stewart 

also began manufacturing the housings of 

Tommy Guns during this era. 

When World War II began, Stewart 

contributed to the U.S. war effort by 

manufacturing tank armor and portable 

Baily bridges. Even though the Stewart 

family’s roots are traced to Scotland, 

an overwhelming majority of its skilled 

tradesman were first generation German- 

Americans – many of whom still spoke 


German as their first language. U.S. 

regulations regarding German-American 

citizens made it difficult for Stewart to 

receive government contracts and subsidies 

during the war. As a result, the loss of 

income left Stewart unable to invest in new 

equipment for mass production, leading to a 

severe decline in fence sales during and after 

the war. 

THROUGHOUT THE POST-WAR ERA 

into the 1980s, Stewart continued to focus 

on the jail and security industry, while 

still maintaining a presence in high-end 

ornamental iron fencing and structures. 

The prosperity of the 1990s brought a 

renewed sense of appreciation for traditional 

craftsmanship and design. Ornamental Iron 

became popular again and the liabilities of 

hand forging and the missed opportunities 

in mass manufacturing had become Stewart’s 

greatest asset. 

In 2005, Stewart Iron Works was 

purchased by a group of investors eager to 

showcase this traditional craftsmanship with 

a renewed sense of purpose. “We consider

Under new leadership, stewart’s expertise 

grew beyond ornamental iron to also include 

the fusing of iron, steel, glass, crystal and 

other materials together. Stewart’s work 

can be found on some of the more notable 

modern structures around the world such as 

Disney World, TPC Sawgrass golf course, the 

St. Regis Hotel in Atlanta, and the Scioto Mile 

Fountain in Columbus. 


BUSINESS / STEWART IRON WORKS 

The 1990s brought a renewed sense of 

appreciation for traditional craftsmanship 

and design and the missed opportunities 

of mass manufacturing became Stewart 

Iron Work’s greatest assets. 

TODAY, STEWART IS CONSULTED by the world’s leading 

designers to discuss “far-out” concepts or the feasibility of making 

ideas a reality. Stewart combines expertise from design, structural 

and material engineering, blacksmithing, fabrication, finishing, and 

custom installation to create these artistic masterpieces. “It takes 

talent,” Heidrich said, “on the part of our craftsman and patience on 

the part of our customers to produce these one-of-a-kind structures.” 

Today, people all over the country find the seminal Stewart

SIX WEEKS PRIOR TO BIBI’S DUE 

DATE, caretakers at the Cincinnati Zoo 

and Botanical Gardens received an 

alarming phone call – the Nile hippo had 

gone into labor. Hippos often give birth 

in the water, so the zoo’s Conservation 

and Research of Endangered Wildlife 

post-doctoral researcher Jessye 

Wojtusik said she arrived to perform an 

ultrasound on Bibi to ensure the baby 

was still safely in the womb. 

“I found the baby, but the problem 

was she had moved so far up I couldn’t 

locate any of her organs or spine, so I 

couldn’t tell what position she was in,” 

Wojtusik said. “Everybody was very 

nervous because she was very early.” 

The results of their labor – along with 

Bibi’s, of course – was adorable baby 

Fiona born later that day.

Since her birth Jan. 24, Fiona has 

made steady progress until recently 

running into some trouble teething, 

requiring her to receive fluids and return 

to a feeding tube. A Vascular Access 

Team (VAT) was brought in late last week 

to help with dehydration. “The vet staff 

and the keeper staff are taking really 

good care of her,” Wojtusik said. “They’re 

so dedicated.” 

Hailing from farm country, Wojtusik 

said she never imagined one day 

her experience with livestock would 

land her squarely on the hippo care 

team. In addition to lending a hand 

to the 24-hour care team, Wojtusik 

can officially claim bragging rights for 

capturing the earliest photos of the 

baby hippo; images of Fiona while still 

in the womb. Wojtusik is the first known 

person to perform the procedure on 

the species. 

“They’ve done it on pygmy hippos, 

but they’re much smaller so I think 

it’s less tissue to get through with the 

ultrasound,” she said. “In the beginning, 

we were struggling a lot. Their skin is just 

so thick and there’s just a lot to them.”

As Nile hippos have a reputation 

for being difficult to train, she said 

others may have been reluctant to 

attempt the procedure. She said Bibi 

was extremely cooperative, learning 

how to move into an enclosed chute, 

lean in and lift her leg on command 

in order for Wojtusik to slide the 

ultrasound wand across the hippo’s 

belly. The actual training process for 

the 3,200-pound hippo progressed 

smoothly, Wojtusik said, with the key 

being Bibi’s love of food. 

“So every time she does something 

right or stays still, the keepers are 

feeding her apples or beet pulp or 

lettuce – so there’s constant positive 

reinforcement going on,” she said. 

Even though it took a few months 

to finally see the baby through Bibi’s 

thick tissue, Wojtusik said persistence 

paid off. At first she said they only 

saw dark shapes, which later became 

more clearly defined as the baby grew. 

As she was the first to record the 

process on Nile hippos, she said every 

step was a learning curve in terms of 

how visible the baby should be. 

“Everybody kept saying, ‘Why can’t 

you see it?’ And when we could start to 

see it, everyone wanted to know what 

sex it was,” she said. “At first I could 

only see the ribs and the spine and that 

was exciting – and then when I could

Wojtusik admits it’s more than 

serendipity that landed her on Team 

Fiona. Since childhood, the CREW 

researcher said hippos have always been 

her favorite animal. After mentioning her 

desire to work with the zoo’s new hippo 

pair, CREW Director Terri Roth sent her 

to begin ultrasounds on the potentially 

pregnant Bibi. “Terri just knew I had a 

love for them and she figured out a way 

I could get involved and it just kind of 

evolved from there,” she said. 

As Wojtusik had limited experience 

working with ultrasound, CREW 

assigned her to several other projects

to get more familiar with imaging. 

Most infamously, Wojtusik performed 

ultrasounds on Moe the sloth, checking 

for pregnancy. It was during those 

procedures Wojtusik discovered Moe 

could never get pregnant because she 

was actually a he, solving the confusing 

case of Moe. “I like to call it hazing,” she 

said with a grin. “They set me up.” 

Before Team Fiona, Wojtusik joined 

CREW to help unlock the mystery 

behind iron overload disorder in rhinos. 

She explained for reasons yet unknown, 

rhinos tend to build up excess iron in their 

bloodstream, eventually leading to organ 

failure. The condition claimed the lives of 

two Sumatran rhinos Emi and Suci at the 

Cincinnati Zoo as well as a number of 

black rhinos under professional care at 

zoos and other facilities. 

“It could be diet, it could be genetics, 

it could be so many different things,” 

she said. “We’re really trying to narrow 

in on it to find out how this disease 

progresses, what’s causing it and how 

do we stop it.” 

As part of her work with CREW, 

Wojtusik also assists other institutions 

in rhino reproduction, traveling to collect 

semen samples from males as well as 

helping to assess the viability of mating 

pairs. She explained sometimes zoos 

wait too long to attempt to breed rhinos, 

creating infertility issues for females. 

That’s not the case for the Cincinnati 

Zoo’s black rhino pair, she said, as she’s 

performing ultrasounds on pregnant 

female Seyia. The baby is due in July. 

“The thing with rhinos is their skin 

is super thick so you can only see so 

deep,” she said. “You do see something 

float by but it’s not well defined – it’s like 

this little mass. But we can definitely tell 

she’s pregnant.” n

Cleveland Play House 

and the Community 

America’s first professional regional theatre partners with local organizations.

IF YOU ASK ARTISTIC DIRECTOR LAURA KEPLEY 

what Cleveland Play House (CPH) is all about, she’ll tell you that the 

theatre exists “to tell stories that matter; to nurture artists at every stage 

of their career; to create thrilling, bold, and necessary new work; and 

develop innovative education programs.” In short, to create art that 

reflects stories in our community and around the world, and in doing 

so strengthen the bonds that unite us. Each season, CPH stages seven to 

nine productions in three state-of-the-art venues at Playhouse Square in 

downtown Cleveland. And a lot goes in to making that happen. 

Behind the Scenes 

First, the artistic team reads and discusses hundreds of plays. After 

much consideration the season takes shape. Then, director and designers 

from around the country are chosen for each show, and soon they’re 

hard at work, collaborating as they imagine and outline the world of 

the play. As designs are finalized, the director and a casting agency cast 

the show. Before long, actors are in the rehearsal room learning lines, 

moving through blocking, and exploring each moment in the script. 

Meanwhile, carpenters, painters, prop masters, and costume artisans 

build the set, props, and costumes. Electricians hang the lights. Audio 

engineers program sound boards and rig microphones and speakers. 

As the artists craft world-class theatre productions, all energy is focused 

on meeting that one critical deadline: opening night. And that’s just 

the mainstage season. Other offerings include New Ground Theatre 

Festival, generously sponsored by Honorary Producer Roe Green, which 

showcases new theatrical works (from large-scale productions, to solo 

performances, to play readings) every spring. 

CPH has grown immensely—in size, scope, and impact—since its 

formation in 1915. What began as a living-room puppet theatre has 

evolved into America’s first professional regional theatre, and, in 2015, 

it received the coveted Regional Theatre Tony Award.® Over the years, 

it has hosted and helped launch the careers of many well-known actors, 

including Joel Grey (the original Emcee in Cabaret), Paul Newman 

(Academy Award winner for Eddie Felson in The Color of Money), and 

Alan Alda (Captain Hawkeye Pierce in M*A*S*H).

All the World’s a School 

Since part of the CPH mission is to 

produce theatre education programs of the 

highest professional standards, programs are 

offered in local schools and at CPH. Theatre 

is brought to kids in their schools with 

Classroom Matinees—touring productions 

that are written and produced with Cleveland 

students in mind. And thousands of students 

each year come to the theaters to experience 

the mainstage productions at special student 

matinees of mainstage shows. 

CPH teaching artists work in classrooms as 

part of CARE (Compassionate Arts Remaking 

Education), an artist-in-residence program 

that uses theatre to improve social emotional 

learning (SEL) skills and increase literacy. The 

theatre also hosts Educator Evenings, providing 

teachers with one hour of professional 

development, dinner, and a subsidized ticket 

for a mainstage performance that evening. 

With arts programs being cut back in 

schools across the country, Cleveland Play 

House has joined The United Way and 

Cleveland Metropolitan School District to 

re-define education, using a “wraparound 

strategy” that connects CPH with lowperforming 

schools. This in-school effort, using 

theatre techniques in everyday education, helps 

ensure children come to school every day ready 

to learn in a safe and encouraging environment. 

Besides ensuring access to adequate food and 

clothing, CPH in-school site coordinators 

help students build empathy, practice active 

listening, and strengthen communication skills. 

“In theatre, we get to take all of life’s 

challenges, and we get to rehearse them by 

playing them out in a way that’s safe and allows 

us to go to places that we wouldn’t in our 

normal life,” says Kepley. “Theatre is the closest 

you can get to all of life’s craziness without 

getting hurt.” 

KeyBank CPH College is another 

program that brings young people from 

more than 70 area high schools together to 

participate in masterclasses, socialize with 

their peers during lunch, converse about 

theatre, and attend plays—all for free. In 

addition, to prepare new college graduates for 

a career in theatre production, management,

or administration, each season CPH offers up 

to 16 paid and housed apprenticeships. Finally, 

in partnership with Case Western Reserve 

University, CPH helps train performers as part 

of the CWRU/CPH MFA Acting Program; 

every two years, eight students are admitted 

for a three-year program in curriculum-based 

and performance experiences, culminating in 

an Actors’ Equity membership, a New York 

showcase, and a master’s degree.

SPRING TRAINING IS A LONG CHERISHED 

TRADITION for baseball fans all across 

America. Folks of all ages travel to both 

Florida and Arizona to seek America’s 

favorite past time sport. Pleasant temps 

and bountiful sunshine compliment the

training offers, from meeting your favorite

Spring training is almost as old as 

baseball itself. The best evidence points 

to spring training first taking place in 

1870, when the Cincinnati Red Stockings 

and the Chicago White Stockings held 

organized baseball camps in New Orleans. 

Other baseball historians argue that the 

Washington Capitals of the National League 

pioneered spring training in 1888, holding a 

four-day camp in Jacksonville. In either case, 

the roots of spring training history go deep, 

and the specific origins really don’t matter. By 

1900, spring training was firmly established 

as a baseball ritual, with most American 

and National League teams heading out of 

town so players could train and managers 

could evaluate. Small Florida and Arizona 

communities were suddenly known across 

the nation because of the allure provided by 

major-league baseball.

some years, teams not scheduled to play on 

Opening Day will play spring training games 

that day. Pitchers and catchers report to 

spring training first because pitchers benefit 

from a longer training period. A few days 

later, position players arrive and team practice 

begins. Team members normally wear their 

batting practice uniforms for the duration of 

spring training and only wear their normal 

jerseys beginning on Opening Day. 

AS A FRESH SEASON APPROACHES, we’re 

excited to see what our favorite team looks 

like for the upcoming season. High hopes 

the new players acquired in trade deals will 

perhaps be the missing link the team may 

desperately need or the season veteran has 

come back fully recovered from his injury 

that kept him out most if not all of last 

season. Nonetheless, we are optimistic and 

ready to don our favorite sports gear and 

head to the ballpark. 

Recently, I traveled to Arizona, where 

the teams of the Cactus league practice. First 

stop was catching up with the World Series 

champions, the Chicago Cubs. 

Wow, Cubbies fans are truly one-of-akind. 

I arrived at Sloan Field on a Monday, 

thinking on my drive over, traffic shouldn’t 

be to bad; it’s a Monday after all. Well to my 

surprise, the traffic was backed up for several 

miles leading up to the ballpark. Tailgaters 

had their areas all set up ready to party 

before the game. Just as you would see on 

any given football Sunday.

One thing I’m willing to bet hasn’t 

changed over the years – for enthusiastic 

rookies to veteran Major Leaguers alike – is 

the drive and passion these player have to 

perform to the best of their ability. It’s still 

evident on all of their faces. 

Whether it was the rookies at their first 

Spring Training, a seasoned pitcher coming 

off a long stretch of arm rehabilitation, or a 

franchise player picking up where they left 

off, the smiles and enthusiasm were a clear 

reminder that, even though baseball has 

evolved into a well oiled business machine, 

the spirit of America’s greatest pastime 

remains in tact for all the next generation of 

little leaguers to come. n

1 /3 cup fresh squeezed lime juice

Cointreau, sugar, water and ice into a blender 

and blend until smooth.

Chicken Ingredients: 

Bunch of fresh cilantro, chopped 

3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 

4 large bone-in chicken breast halves 

or thighs, skin on 

2½ teaspoons chili powder 

½ teaspoon cumin

Pan Sauce Ingredients: 

2 limes 

3 tablespoons honey 

1 /3 cup chicken stock 

3 tablespoons unsalted butter 

Directions: 

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. 

In a large ovenproof skillet heat over 

medium-high heat. 

Add the olive oil and heat until 

shimmering. Season the chicken with chili 

power, cumin and salt to taste. 

Put the chicken breasts in the skillet skin 

side down and cook until brown. Turn the 

chicken and transfer the pan to the oven. 

Cook until firm, basting with the pan 

drippings 20 minutes. 

Transfer the chicken to a plate and cover 

with foil to keep warm. Add lime juice to the 

pan chicken was cooked in. Cook for 1 minute 

and then add the honey and chicken stock to 

heat through. Remove from heat and stir in ¼ 

cup cilantro and butter. 

Serve with fresh tomato salsa.

Pork Carnitas 

Pork Carnitas 

Pork Carnitas are very versatile. This 

recipe is so easy – just set it and forget it in the 

slow cooker. 

Pork Ingredients: 

6 pound boneless pork shoulder (skin 

removed but leave some of the fat cap on) 

1¼ chopped onion 

2 jalapeno peppers, seeded and chopped 

2½ teaspoons sea salt 

1½ teaspoons black pepper 

5 cloves garlic, minced 

2 fresh oranges, juiced (or use 3/4 cup fresh 

squeezed orange juice) 

Rub Ingredients: 

1 tablespoon dried oregano 

4 crushed dried bay leaves 

2½ teaspoons ground cumin 

1½ tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 

Instructions: 

Rinse and dry the pork and rub in salt and 

pepper. Combine the rub ingredients and rub 

all over the pork. Place the pork in the slow 

cooker fat cap up. 

Top with onion, jalapeno, garlic and the 

orange juice. 

Cook on low for 8 to 10 hours or on high 

for 6 hours. The meat should be tender and 

falling off the bone when done. 

Remove from slow cooker and let cool. 

Shred the pork using two forks. 

Skim the fat from the juices remaining, 

discard the fat and set aside. 

To Serve: 

Heat 1½ tablespoons of olive oil in a large 

non stick pan over high heat. 

Place shredded pork into the pan and 

drizzle with juices from the cooked meat. 

Wait till the juices evaporate and the 

bottom side is golden brown and crusty. Turn 

and slightly sear the other side. 

Do not make it too brown because it will 

be too crispy and you need tender juicy meat. 

Repeat in batches till all meat is browned. 

Remove from skillet to serving platter and 

drizzle more juices over meat. 

Serve immediately with diced avocado, 

Pico de Gallo, sour cream, onions, and your 

preference of tacos or tortillas. 


Avocado and Tomato Salad 

Ingredients: 

4 medium vine ripe tomatoes, chopped 

2 avocados, chopped 

1 /3 cup diced red onion 

2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 

2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar 

2 teaspoons fresh squeezed lime juice 

Sea salt and fresh ground pepper to taste 

Directions: 

Mix all ingredients in a bowl and toss 

gently. 

Let stand 5 to 10 minutes before serving. 

Avocado and Tomato Salad 

Black Beans and Rice 

Black Beans and Rice 

Ingredients: 

1 pound dried black beans 

6 cups water 

1 cup chopped onion 

1 cup chopped peppers 

2 jalapeno peppers seeded and chopped 

4 cloves garlic, minced 

1 /3 cup extra virgin olive oil 

3 bay leaves 

1 teaspoon sea salt 

1 /3 teaspoons black pepper 

1 slices cooked crisp and crumbled bacon 

2½ tablespoons red wine vinegar 

2 cups cooked long-grain rice 

¼ teaspoon cumin 

Directions: 

In a large stockpot cover black beans 

with water and boil for 2 minutes. 

Remove from heat and let stand for one 

hour. (You can also cover beans in a stockpot 

and let the soak overnight if you prefer.) 

Drain water and cover beans with 6 or 7 

cups fresh water. 

Saute the onions, bell peppers (red, 

yellow, orange), jalapeno, and garlic until 

tender. Add onion mixture and all remaining 

ingredients except the vinegar to the beans 

and bring to a boil. 

Reduce heat and simmer for 2 hours 

covered or until the beans are tender. Add 

more water if necessary. Just before serving 

add the red wine vinegar. 

Serve over cooked rice and top with 

chopped green onions, fresh cilantro, and/or 

sour cream!

Jalapeno Cornbread 

Ingredients: 

2 /3 cup unsalted butter 

2 /3 cup white cane sugar 

2 cups cornmeal 

1 1 /3 cups all purpose flour 

4½ teaspoons baking powder 

1 teaspoon salt 

3 extra large eggs 

1 cups milk 

2 /3 cup buttermilk 

¾ cups chopped, seeded jalapeno peppers 

Directions: 

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. 

Grease 9 x 13 inch glass baking dish. 

Beat sugar and butter together until 

smooth. Combine flour, cornmeal, baking 

powder and salt in a separate bowl. Mix eggs, 

milk and buttermilk in another bowl. Pour 1/3 

of milk and butter milk mixture with 1/3 of the 

flour/ cornmeal mixture; whisk until just mixed. 

Repeat with remaining ingredients and 

stir in jalapeno peppers. 

Pour in baking dish and bake until a 

toothpick inserted in the center comes out 

clean, about 25 minutes. 

Mango Lime Mousse 

Ingredients 

2 mangos, peeled and diced 

3 tablespoons fresh squeezed lime juice 

2 egg whites 

1 thinly sliced lime (for garnish) 

3 tablespoons honey 

1 1 /3 cups heavy cream 

3 tablespoons zest of lime 

Directions: 

Puree the mangoes, honey and lime juice 

in a blender until smooth. 

Whip the heavy cream into soft peaks; 

gently fold the whipped cream into the mango 

puree. 

Beat egg whites in a clean dry bowl until 

stiff. Gently fold half of the egg whites into the 

mango mixture until well blended then fold 

in the remaining egg whites into the mousse 

mixture. 

Pour into small ramekins and chill for at 

least 2 hours. 

Garnish with lime zest and lime slices. 


Rice Pudding 

Ingredients: 

¾ cup uncooked white rice 

1 cup milk, divided 

1 cup half and half, divided 

½ cup white cane sugar 

¼ teaspoon sea salt 

1 extra large egg, beaten 

2 /3 cup golden raisins 

2 tablespoons unsalted butter 

1 /3 teaspoon vanilla extract 

Directions: 

Bring 1½ cups water to a boil in a heavy 

saucepan; stir rice into boiling water. Reduce 

heat to low, cover and simmer rice for 20 

minutes. 

In a clean saucepan combine 1½ cups 

cooked rice, ½ cup milk, ½ cup half and half, 

sugar and salt. Cook over medium heat until 

thick and creamy about 20 minutes. Stir in 

remaining milk, beaten egg and raisins; cook 

3 minutes longer, stirring constantly. Remove 

from heat and stir in butter and vanilla. 

Garnish with sprinkle of cinnamon and 

nutmeg and a spoon-full of whipped cream. n
