WELCOME TO NAXOS –
The World's Leading Classical Music Group
FOREWORD BY KLAUS HEYMANN, Founder and Chairman of NAXOS
Naxos – A World of Classical Music
Naxos was founded in 1987 and has developed from being known primarily as a budget label focusing on standard
repertoire into a virtual encyclopaedia of classical music with a catalogue of unparalleled depth and breadth. Innovative
strategies for recording exciting new repertoire with exceptional talent have enabled the Naxos label to develop one of the
largest and fastest-growing catalogues of unduplicated repertoire. Over 9,000 titles are currently available at affordable
prices, recorded in state-of-the-art sound, both in hard format and on digital platforms. Naxos works with artists of
the highest calibre and its recordings have been recognised with numerous Grammy® awards, Penguin Guide 3-star
recommendations, Gramophone Editor’s Choice Awards and many other international honours.
The company has also transformed into a global enterprise that owns, administers and/or distributes a large number of
independent record labels. Some of these labels are listed in this catalogue.
The Naxos name is synonymous not only with classical music recordings, but also with other products and services, from
DVDs to books, e-books, audio books, apps and musical scores, as well as a wide range of online resources and services, for
both general and professional consumption.
With its suite of subscription streaming platforms, Naxos continues as a leader and innovator, particularly in the area of
education. Launched in 2002, NaxosMusicLibrary.com is used by thousands of educational institutions around the world.
With over 120,000 albums from hundreds of labels and more than 1,000 albums being added every month, it has become
the listening source of choice for generations of students and professional musicians as they explore classical music. Together
with the Naxos Video, Jazz, World Music and Spoken Word libraries, our online resources have had a great impact in
developing future audiences for these genres.
The Naxos label’s 2016 musical milestones
The Naxos label is famous for its many projects to record either a composer’s complete oeuvre, or complete cycles of works
from within that output. Cycles completed in 2016 include the string quartets of Sergey Ivanovich Taneyev, performed
by the Carpe Diem String Quartet; Enrique Granados’ orchestral works, featuring the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra
directed by Pablo González; and Benjamin Frith’s recordings of John Field’s piano concertos, part of the Romantic Piano
Concertos Series.
Ongoing projects include Wagner’s Ring Cycle performed by the Hong Kong Philharmonic and a star-studded cast of
singers, conducted by Jaap van Zweden; Ravel’s orchestral works from Leonard Slatkin and the Lyon National Orchestra;
the Prokofiev symphonies from Marin Alsop and the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra (OSESP); and the overtures of
Domenico Cimarosa. Jordi Masó’s groundbreaking survey of the piano music of Joaquín Turina has now reached its
penultimate, twelfth volume; and our complete Liszt piano cycle has reached Volume 43.
We began a number of new projects in 2016, including the complete works for violin and orchestra by Wolfgang Rihm
(the two CDs featuring soloist Tianwa Yang); the complete orchestral works of Saint-Saëns, conducted by Jun Maerkl; and
a spotlight on Catalan composers Joan Manén and Ricard Lamote de Grignon from the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra.
We continued to add some truly outstanding releases throughout the year. Among the highlights were Tianwa Yang’s disc
of violin concertos by Édouard Lalo and Joan Manén; pianist Boris Giltburg’s recording of Rachmaninov’s Etudes-tableaux
Op. 39 and Moments musicaux; and the complete version of Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale, conducted by JoAnn Falletta.
Other standouts included the Victor Herbert cello concertos, featuring soloist Mark Kosower and the Ulster Orchestra,
