Downtown St. Pete is the most walkable large scale geographic area within the entire Tampa
Bay region. Enhanced pedestrian access exists in most of downtown St. Pete, which features
extra wide tree-lined sidewalks, enhanced pavement materials, street furniture, outdoor cafes,
and safety features such as bollards and count-down pedestrian signals at intersections –
all designed to enhance the pedestrian experience. This vision was established by the City’s
downtown redevelopment plans beginning in 1982, and was formally implemented with specific
development guidelines under the City’s “Plaza Parkway” design manual that was adopted in
1989. This combined with an efficient street grid pattern has resulted in the evolution of the
City’s remarkable downtown pedestrian corridors. Downtown St. Pete’s most recent national
“Walkability Score” for zip code 33701 was 78th in the “very walkable” category; and, downtown
Tampa’s score was 59th in the less walkable category of “somewhat walkable” (per zip code
33602). (Source: walkscore.com)
