non-school interests and hobbies and have a break away from the normal day to day updates on what happens at school.
This is only our first magazine, there will be many more to come. This is our first footprint in a long walk. We will be adding
much more content in the future and we hope to get more students involved and suggestions on what they would want to
read about. The publicity panel with the help from students were the main ideas behind this magazine and reflects our
inspiration to excel and create.
We are the leading generation that defines the pop culture. We've seen the culture and spirit that lives through our hallways.
It can be seen in the way we dress, react and laugh. We are the young minds shaping the future and the present. We are all
trying to break away from the past, because the past does not define our future. The power of our creativity and souls is our
driving power, this is the spirit that York students have and live by. York students were born to change and innovate. Our
singers, dancers, painters and sports men and women are all the ambassadors of innovation.
While going about your
normal hipster routine of
hating the mainstream pop
genre, drinking over-priced coffee
at the local coffee shop filled with
Macbooks and graphic artists, you’ll
need these 5 items to bring out the true
hipster tendencies in you.
5 Things every
hipster needs
1. A Record Player
Nothing says hipster more than obsolete music
platforms to explore the artists of past generations
that our culture is built on. There are record players
from Marantz, Audio-Technica and many other
audio companies to choose from to get the best
sound quality and experience out of your records.
2. An Instant Camera
Capturing the raw essence of a moment and holding
it in your hand, as you reflect upon the nostalgic
presence of what you felt as the film was ejected out
of your instant camera. That is what an instant
camera is about. Classic companies like FujiFilm
and Polaroid have now made it possible for us to go
back to the film-age.
3. A Band T-Shirt Of A Band No-One Knows
You always know them before they are popular.
We’re all proud of the moment when we discover
uncharted genres and bands that have not yet
peaked into the mainstream spotlight. Why not
wear a band t-shirt of them and complete your hipster
look. “Oh, what band is that?”, is also a great
conversation starter!

4. Retro/Vintage Gaming Systems
Even though we have come a long way from the
Pixel generated worlds to the vast open galaxies
(Yes I’m looking at you No Man’s Sky!). We have
not yet evolved as we go back to our gaming roots to
the forefathers of what is known today as games.
Revisit the classics by investing in a Retro console
like the newly released Atari or the Mini Retro
release of the NES. You could also invest in an
actual vintage console.
"
A hipster is someone that's eager to learn, to see—and
yes—even to do. Being a hipster means you're part of a
subculture. As a demographic, hipsters try to set themselves
apart from culture as a whole, while simultaneously
remaining within the culture.

"
5. Retro Shades
Yes, we had to include this. The retro shades that
have become the staple image of hipsters is a classic
pair of glasses that has been worn by the likes of
James Dean before being hipster was even a trend.
They are very accessible and can be found easily at
places like the classic powerhouse sunglasses company
Ray-Ban.
AI~The Beginning
of a New Era
Ever since man has been able to look back in time with the help of new technology, we have classified
eras that have taken place. The stone age lasted for millions of years. Following that, the metal
age lasted for hundreds of thousands of years, the industrial age lasted for a couple hundred of years
and now we are currently in what some call the technological age which has lasted for several
decades now.
When looked at in this way it becomes pretty apparent that pretty soon we should be expecting a
new age. This begs the question however of what this new age will entail?
In recent years, many computer scientists thought they’ve found the answer. AI stands for artificial
intelligence and although the idea of independently thinking computers has been around for centuries,
the technologies needed to make them, hasn’t been developed until now.
Scientists believe that in the near future, plus or minus 20 years, we will have our first completely
autonomous general-use computer. General being the keyword.
Thus far scientists have successfully created programs capable of
learning new information by themselves through trial and
error. In other words, scientists are basing their program
design on the way the human brain takes in new
information. For example, scientists at Google’s
Deepmind program, developed a
program which used a virtual neural
network which would be able to read
and interpret English. They attempted
to teach a computer to actually understand
English.
This means that once it has learnt all the ins
and outs of the English language, theoretically
it should be able to string together a coherent
sentence from scratch. Not only that but it would
understand what it is actually saying. So, to do this
the scientists fed it thousands of romance novels to
read and analyze.
After refining and rewriting its algorithm by itself as AI
does best, the researchers asked the program to write a
poem. The program took what it knew about grammatical
rules and applied it to the somewhat general rules of a poem.

Below are 2 poems, one written by a human and one written by Google’s
AI.
1.
"Now, little Edward, say why so:
My little Edward, tell me why." –
"I cannot tell, I do not know." –
"Why, this is strange," said I.
2.
There is no one else in the world.
there is no one else in sight.
they were the only ones who mattered.
they were the only ones left.
he had to be with me. she had to be with
him.
i had to do this. i wanted to kill him.
i started to cry.
i turned to him.
The First poem was written by Williams Wordsworth and the second by the Google AI.
As you can see development in this field has made huge progress. As we get closer to creating a fully
functioning AI we’re starting to understand more and more about the intricacies of the way neural
networks function. Equally so as we start to progress and create better AI’s we actually start to lose
track of the way they start to “think”.
Recently Google’s Deepmind team created their newest most advanced version of AI which they
christened Alpha Go. They wanted to test its ability to learn so they set it up to the task of playing
the Chinese board game called Go.
Much like Chess, Go consists of moving physical pieces across the board in a strategic manner in
order to defeat the opponent. However, unlike chess it has been estimated that the number of possible
moves and outcomes is greater than the number of individual atoms in the known universe.
What this means is that the computer can’t keep a record of every possible move and or outcome
and so rather has to rely on intuition rather than brute processing power.
The amazing thing is that after feeding the program thousands of videos of Go tournaments, it started
to learn how to play the game by itself, without being told or programmed to do so. Once it
understood the basic fundamentals of the game it started playing against itself millions of times over.
After every game, it would slowly rewrite its own programming to refine its technique. Eventually
the coding started to think in ways that the creators of Alpha Go could have never imagined. Soon
after, it beat the Number one ranking Go player, Lee Sedol.
So clearly the advances in the field of AI are progressing at an exponential rate as the ushering of
new eras often do. The question is, once we develop a functioning general purpose AI, will it turn
hostile after watching the terminator?
In true super genius fashion Steven Hawking said that “the rise of powerful AI will be either the
best or the worst thing ever to happen to humanity. We do not know which.”
So what is poetry?
Poetry means different
things to different people
and over the centuries
people have tried to
define poetry but there is
as many definitions of
poetry as there are
people. Wordsworth
defined poetry as "the
spontaneous overflow of
powerful feelings;" Emily
Dickinson said, "If I read a
book and it makes my
body so cold no fire ever
can warm me, I know that
is poetry;" and Dylan
Thomas defined poetry
this way: "Poetry is what
makes me laugh or cry or
yawn, what makes my
toenails twinkle, what
makes me want to do this
or that or nothing.”
So there you have it from
the horses’, (poets’)
mouths …poetry can be
many different things to
many different people.
Ask a number of people
who their favourite poet is
and you will have answers
from Wordsworth to
Shakespeare to TS Elliot
to Japanese poets like
Matshuo Basho to South
African poet, Mafika
Gwala. Shall I continue?
For to do so would take
forever as I have not even
mentioned postmodernism,
experimentalists,
slam...
AND SO …WHAT IS
POETRY?
Perhaps the characteristic
most central to the definition
of poetry is its unwillingness
to be defined,
labelled, or nailed down.
Poetry is to every person
what speaks to him/her at
that moment.
Poetry is the expression
of emotion through language
and; it's a canvas
splattered with all the
colours of the rainbow
where the poet uses
words instead of paint,
and the canvas is you.
You take from the words
and colour your canvas
through your interpretation.
Poetry is emotional and
evocative. It typically
evokes in the reader an
intense emotion: joy,
sorrow, anger, catharsis,
love... Alternatively, poetry
has the ability to surprise
the reader with an Ah Ha!
Experience -- revelation,
insight, further understanding
of elemental
truth and beauty.
Don't constrict poetry with
definitions. Poetry is not a
broken bird or a helpless
infant. Poetry is stronger
than you think. Poetry is
imagination and will break
those chains faster than
you can say, "Beauty is in
the eye of the beholder."
To borrow a phrase,
poetry is a riddle wrapped
in an enigma swathed in a
cardigan sweater... or
something like that.
And that, I think, is the
purpose of poetry.
Read some poetry written
by our own Yorkies and let
the words speak to you.
Mother moon, sister moon
The moon
She speaks to me
So soft and sweet
My ears are filled with her words
And I too fill hers
We are bound together
With a crimson ribbon
So when I cry
She does too
Sisterly, motherly tears
The moon rises
up and up
And we move with the tide
As soft as her words
Love lead the way
Our hearts were drawn to each other like the north and the south. We let love lead the
way as our feet followed the rhythm. The moon and stars gazed at us lending us their
light as we made this moment special. My eyes were fixed to yours and yours to mine
and I started to see our future in them.
We let love lead the way as we are quickly reminded of the sweet days of our youth
when mistakes were part of puberty. Now old age seems like something waiting to
consume me but that won't be a problem as I will love your wrinkles away.
I let love lead the way as you gave me the precious gift that now reflects your smile.
My love still grows stronger and stronger each day even though you are not by my
side. When lonely nights come my tears bring me comfort as I hold on to the memories
when I once was We. I will let my undying love lead the way until we are reunited
again.
remained faithful to their marriage even though she was gone.)
Mother's nightmare
I held you in my arms. I watched as hunger crushed
every bone in your body sucking the life out of you.
Your eyes had nothing but just your soul pleading
with death to take it. Your hair coral in colour and your
hunger nourished by the little air it got.
I held you in my arms.
My lovefor you was as useless as a mother watching
her cub being fed to the lions. The youth in your smile
slowly dying.
Your tears that I wished I could have fed you and the
milk from my breast was worse than poison itself.
The dust we bathed in and our dreams that tumbled
down with the buildings we once called our homes.
Hush and let my love for you carry you over to the
other side.
I will set you free.
Natasia Leggatt
I have tried it all: the
notorious notes (in colour,
then in black), making mindmaps
and drawing diagrams, reciting
pages as though they were the script
to a drama or the lyrics of a musical.
I’ve done the talking to a teddy, I have
Amy Tait
methods that I
remained entertained
and
engaged in my
work. I adopted
sat, stood and danced and even
did “brain exercises” before
studying.I guess it is
thanks to this ongoing
change in study
techniques to
suit me according
to the phase I
was in.
What helps me when I am
studying for exams ...
It’s all about comfort! Make sure you
have a quiet, comfortable and familiar room to study
in. Ensure you study in the right environment with no
distractions. And don’t forget to take good, ACTIVE
study breaks!
Hats off to....
Sarah Galvin
I try to work continiously throughout the term
by keeping my notes up to date and doing
whatever homework I am given. I study by
making flashcards, mindmaps and summaries
which I make colourful so that I feel
motivated to study from them. I also find
youtube videos helpful as they are both
auditory and visual. When I’m revising I
pretend to teach someone else because
it helps me to say the work out loud.
What works for me.
I have discovered 3 things that
really work when I study. Writing: I
make summaries of all my sudy work,Verbalising:
I then read these summaries aloud. Practice: I do
all my homework! I do past papeers and use extra exam aid
books to practice questions. But besides these 3 things it is really
important to ask queestions when you
don’t understand. Don’t wait until
exams because then it is
too late.
Judi Kuyler
Christelle Herbst
Firstly, I look at studying as the “cool” thing to do. Education
is our right but it is our responsibility to do well and
grab opportunities that come with it. Secondly, know yourself.
I get distracted easily by outside noises, so I listen to
music (anything without lyrics). Know how long to study and
how long to take breaks. Thirdly, studying is mostly done in
class. Listen to your teachers and ask questions. Lastly, set
challenging goals for yourself.

Health
&
Lifestyle
by Kriste Alberts
As a student, I understand
the stress we all go
through, but do we
understand how this
affects us? Tired and
exhausted for exams?
Lack of concentration?
Sleeping more than
studying but still end up
being tired?
This may be the result of
many things but have you
thought of your eating
habits during exams?
Students stress more and
more when it gets to exam
time and as a result may
eat more or eat less. In
either of these cases, it is
extremely unhealthy.
If this is your problem, how
are we going to fix it?
During exams our healthy
eating lifestyle becomes
the last on the list of
priorities. It is very easy to
get into the habit of eating
takeaways, pizza and
drink cup after cup after
cup of coffee. Trust me I
know!
5 Tips for healthy eating habits
during exam time
1. Do NOT skip meals,
especially breakfast.
Check out our information
‘Breakfast – a Great Start
to Your Day’ for some
fantastic breakfast
suggestions, even if you’re
short on time.
2. Time is precious –
choose quick and
healthy meals
Breakfast
•Wholegrain cereal
withmilk and glass of
orange juice
•Wholemeal bread toasted
with chopped banana and
glass of milk
Lunch or Tea
•Bowl of vegetable soup
and wholemeal bread with
an apple and yoghurt
•Chicken / tuna salad wrap
and pure fruit smoothie
•Baked beans on
whole-grain toast
•Baked potato topped with
tinned tuna, baked beans
or grated cheese
•Scrambled egg on toast
with grilled tomato
TOP-TIP! A 'baked' potato
can be easily prepared in a
microwave in about 5
minutes
Dinner
•Chicken or beef stir fry
with noodles
•Egg omelette with cheese
and baked potato
•Pasta with tinned tuna
topped with cheese
TOP TIP! Frozen
vegetables are packed
with nutrients and are
great when you are
pressed for time.
3. Work, rest and play
Adequate sleep is
essential to ensure you
can recall the information
you have worked so hard
to learn as well as to
absorb the new
information you read.
Allow yourself time to relax
before bedtime. Avoid
caffeine-containing drinks
late at night. (Red Bull,
Play, Monster etc.)
To help relieve stress,
clear your mind and lift
your mood, break up your
study with short bursts of
exercise. You could go for
a jog, a swim, a cycle, or
even just walk to the
nearest café.
Work like a Captain and
play like a Pirate.

4. Keep Hydrated!
70% of our bodies consist
of water. The less water
you drink the more your
body needs to work to
keep a balance
(homeostasis). Water is
essential to stay healthy
and improve your
concentration. Drink
between 1.5l and 2l daily.
Consider drinking from a
250ml water bottle and
refill it. Carrying water
around makes you more
conscientious and you end
up finishing it.
Health
&Lifestyle
5. Keep up the snacking.
Snack throughout the day
with healthy eats.
- Popcorn
- Nuts
- Yoghurt
- Fruit or dried Fruit.
Take time to think about
how important it is for your
body to function properly
so that you can be
successful in your studies.
These are but only 5 tips
and there are many others
to consider.
Enjoy, work hard and Good Luck!
Visual Arts
artist Lionel Smith

about ...
Visual Artsby
Robyn Kellerman
A lot of people, including me, don’t realise just how different Art is to all other subjects that
York has to offer. I recently spoke to Britney Marques and Jessica Schreck, two very strong
matric art students at York, and they filled me in on just how challenging it is to take Art as a
school subject.
If you were to take Maths, for example, they give you a textbook, they give you a few formulas,
and then you put all the numbers in the right place and eventually you will end up getting the
right answer. The thing about Art that is so difficult, is that there isn’t an answer, and there’s
no right and wrong. Now you may think that this would make it easy, but it actually makes it
a lot more difficult because you have to come up with everything on your own. There’s nobody
there to tell you what to do or how to do it. So, in Maths, you are given a problem or equation
and everyone will go about solving it in exactly the same way and use the exact same formula,
and hopefully get the exact same answer.
In Art, however, you are given a theme and you have to sit and come up with everything by
yourself, there isn’t a textbook on how to paint or how to be original and creative. If you’re
struggling with art and you can’t figure out what you want to do or what you want to paint or
how you want to paint it, you can’t just simply look in a textbook for the answer. Everything
comes from yourself.
The theme for matrics for 2017 term 1 is “rock, paper, scissors”, and you get Britney who’s
literally just painting a rock, Natassia Leggatt who’s building a corset out of paper and wire,
Leon Schröder who is building abstract pieces from scrap wood and found objects, and then
you get Cameron Watkins who is building a cubist inspired self-portrait out of wood.
Art students sit in class and think about how to draw a line in such a way that it can make you
feel sad, and they sit and try to figure out why a squiggly line makes you feel angry,
meanwhile the science students sit in class and try to figure out why they are there. According
to Jessica, many students take Visual Art for granted, as they don’t understand just how much
work and determination goes into the subject. It is not simply putting paint on a canvas, it’s
a lot more than that. Every term they are given a theme, each student has to do both a journal
as well as an art final piece. As an Art student, you must see your Art journal as a journey
which takes you through various explorations of different media, styles and techniques. Art is
a challenging thing, and is most certainly not easy. But at the end of the day, when you can
stand back as an artist and take a proud look at your final piece, it is the most rewarding
feeling.
I think that we as a school should have such pride in our Art students. I personally have such
a great admiration towards our Art students, how can you not? I mean, just take a look at the
new Art wing and the beautiful and vibrant walls of the dungeon!

show was a huge success and had masses,
including myself, hooked.
The first season follows the disappearance of a
young boy, Will Byers, and the disastrous chain
of events it heaves the small town into. While the
show left us all on the edge of our seats bargaining
our souls for just one more episode, we were left
season two-less.
But there is hope yet! The show is set to return on Halloween
2017. Netflix has not been very vocal about the details of
season two, only that it is going to be just as gripping as we’d hope
for. The cast is returning, with a few new members being introduced.
We can only hope for the best. As for me, I’ll be preparing myself for the
hysteria I’ll be experiencing on Halloween 2017.
Noname & Chance The Rapper
Recently, it feels like every time I look up an artist, their Wikipedia bio tells me they’re from Chicago.
This leads me to believe that Chicago is abuzz with up-and-coming musicians. It seems that for
the last few years it has been churning out talent like it’s going out of style. Two of these talented musicians
are Noname (Formerly Noname Gypsy) and Chance the Rapper.
Noname and Chance met as young adults in a programme called YOUmedia, a Chicago-based
creative centre and networking hub for young, aspiring artists. They then took separate, parallel paths.
When they met again years later, Noname’s spoken word had blossomed into freestyling and she was
warming up to the idea of rapping. Chance recognised talent when he saw it and invited Noname to
lay down a track with him, thus, the birth of Lost.
If you’re a Chance the Rapper fan, you may have noticed Noname’s feature on the track “Lost” on
Chance’s 2013 mixtape, Acid Rap. However brief Noname’s appearance was, it brought her wider
exposure to the Hip Hop world, starting momentum in her career as a rapper.
2016 was a good year for both Chance and Noname. Noname released her long-awaited debut
album, Telefone, which was met with high praise. Chance released the critically acclaimed
Coloring Book, which won a Grammy for Best Rap Album and the BET Hip Hop
Award for Best Mixtape. Both artists released music that was received warmly.
These two produce music of the highest quality. Chance produces soulful,
energetic tracks that leave you wanting more and more. Noname produces
poetic, soulful tracks that often tell a story. They both draw from
their experiences growing up and living in Chicago. The best part:
They often collaborate!
So to any of you wanting to enlighten your ears with some good Hip
Hop, I recommend you give either one of these artists a search.
Their music is available for free on Soundcloud. You won’t regret it.
Title– The Shape of Mercy
Author: Susan Meissner
Place of Publication: Colorado Springs
Publisher: Water Brook
Date of Publication: 16 September 2008
Number of Pages: 305
Genre: Christian Fiction with Historical and Contemporary elements
Susan Meissner is a multi-published author, speaker and writing workshop leader with a background in community
journalism. She is a proud mother of four young adults and a wife to an Air Force chaplain who is also a pastor. Her love
and passion for literature has developed from a young age having grown up with parents who loved books. She worked
at her county newspaper from 1995 to 2002, first as a weekly columnist then later as the editor. During this time, she had
won many awards, but had yet to write her first novel. Her paternal grandfather died in July 2002, which is what caused
her to start thinking that she did not want to die without completing her dream of writing a novel. She was forty-two
years old at that time. The Shape of Mercy is a truly inspirational novel, which gets readers to think and engage with the
storyline and characters as well as its themes. It is a story about choices, stigma, preconceived notions and the lengths
that people are willing to go to.
Abigail Boyles, a mysterious eighty-three year old retired librarian, hires Lauren Durough a young and determined university
student for a very challenging and significant task: to transcribe the phenomenal diary of Mercy Hayworth, a victim
of the Salem witch trials and an ancestor of Abigail. Lauren is a strong-willed woman who decided to study English at
Santa Barbara instead of Economics at Stanford like her entrepreneurial and wealthy father and relatives had wanted her
to do. She is brilliant and talented and yet very confused by all her own preconceived notions as well as that of those
around her. As she transcribes the diary of Mercy, she begins a very personal and important journey of self-discovery that
forces her to re-evaluate her views and opinions of things. She begins to think about how people, no matter their background,
all seem to think that they can understand one another - whether it be the loved and the unloved, the accuser and
the condemned, the free and the bound. “We each seem to think that we understand the other. Truth be told we really
don’t. We understand what we want to understand. That’s how it is. How it’s always been.” (Page 5). But do things truly
need to remain that way? Can we not learn compassion and understanding? Can we not learn from those who have come
before us? Mercy, Abigail and Lauren are three distinct women who come from vastly different generations. So different,
yet so alike and their lives so entwined. Mercy was willing to give her all for love and what she believed to be the right
thing. She had learnt to let go. Abigail on the other hand, as a result of not having the courage to take the necessary risks
for love and what is right, lived with a great deal of regret. Lauren is left to face these fierce obstacles and important questions
and choices. Will she make the right choices and is it too late for Abigail to get the closure she desperately needs?
Susan Meissner has successfully managed to present a new, intriguing and thought provoking novel that represents
different perspectives and aspects of life and people. Though fiction, her writing concerning the Salem witch trials has
historical value as it was well researched, shows deep insight and helps readers to gain better insight and to look deeper
about the events that took place, to not simply take things at face value, to search deeper and find your source of strength
and inspiration. For Susan the answer and source behind her strength, courage and inspiration is God. The Crucible, a
well-known play written by Arthur Miller, is also mentioned in the novel, giving further insight and information. A
strong message that The Shape of Mercy portrays through Mercy’s story is that the actions of men are not the actions of
God and that forgiveness and letting go of preconceived notions and stigma is a choice that only you can make.
Title: The Cuckoo clock of doom
Author: R.L Stine
Publisher: Scholastic
Date of Publication: 1995
Number of Pages: 144
Genre: Fiction, Children’s literature, Horror, Speculative fiction.
A brief synopsis:
This book is about a boy (Michael Webster) who tried to play a trick on his little sister (Tara -The Terrible), but it backfires!
This story revolves mostly around the boy’s birthday and how his sister ruins his birthday by purposefully scratching
his birthday gift. This is his brand new bicycle that he’s been waiting so long to get. She also invites his crush (Mona
Deaton) and her best friend to his bedroom, where they see him in his underwear. That’s not all. She told Mona that
Michael likes her and made him trip with his birthday cake in his hands. She’s truly horrible.
That night his father bought an antique cuckoo clock which Tara touches and the trouble starts. Later at midnight,
Michael goes back to the clock, grabs the cuckoo and turns its head around thrice with the intention of getting Tara in
trouble for it. Every day after that he wakes up a few more years younger until eventually he’s an infant. On this day, his
mother takes him to see his dad’s workplace which is where the clock is. Michael gets hold of the clock, turns its head
back to the way it was whilst knocking an unknown year off the year dial, and goes back to the present, to his birthday
party. There’s no Tara. He knocked the year she was born in off, accidentally, and it’s clear he’s not going back to get her
anytime soon.
Would I recommend this book?
I’d recommend this book to all tweens, teens and parents. It’s not too scary and has the perfect blend of funny and adventure
in with a lot of cliff hangers. It’s great and I loved reading it as a tween.
Thank you, R.L Stine for making my childhood so memorable.
Instructions
First you’ll need to decide on the height of the pencil case. The one
shown is 6” tall so the jean was cut 8” from the hem, allowing 2” of
overlap.
Turn the jeans inside out, and sew the part that you just cut (by machine
or by hand).
Turn the jeans right-side out. Fold over the overlap to decide where to
put the button, then sew it on.
Lay the doily from front to back, and make sure one of the doily openings
will fit the button.
Then glue it into place on the back and on the overlap. For a final
touch, glue on fabric appliqués of your choice
