Cooperation between parties is important
> Your party belongs to the group of social democrats. Do you cooperate with
parties of the same orientation in Serbia, the Democratic Party or the Socialist
Party of Serbia?
- I cannot speak on behalf of the Austrian Social Democratic Party because I froze
my membership when I was elected president, but I believe there is cooperation
within Socialist International.
> How much can that kind of international interparty cooperation help in the resolving
of national issues?
- In general, cooperation between parties that have a similar orientation is a good
thing. That is why both social democrats and conservatives are organized in that
way at the European level.
> Austria once created an economic boom
by opening SMEs. What is the recipe?
- I’m not an economist, but I think a good
education, access to start-up capital and
a dose of entrepreneurial spirit are good
ingredients. During the period of the republic
after World War II, we learned this
lesson from the tragic events before the war:
political stability is extremely important.
Stability and trust between employees and
employers is essential. This is called “social
partnership” and we were successful when
both groups worked together and ensured
that any increase in GDP is allocated in the
fairest possible way.
