FREDA GRAHAM
1939 - 2002
This book is dedicated to Freda Graham, who undertook a large part of the background research, particularly
in respect of Lloyd's Registers of Shipping, where her conscientious, accurate and intelligent work enabled
us to produce reliable and informative data about the Hine Bros. fleet. She also worked indefatigably through
the archives of the various local newspapers held in microfiche storage in London and produced
comprehensive notes and references to the relevant events of the time. These would arrive accompanied
by humorous and insightful comments, backed up by her knowledge of the subject and of Cumbrian
attitudes and people, and were a joy to read. From a Maryport family herself, and with connections to Hine
Bros. (her grandfather was an engineer on one of the steamers), Freda was an enthusiastic colleague and
a skilled researcher. I am sorry she did not live to see this book: I hope she would have been proud of it.
