Black British Art History:
Film Screening & Discussion
The 2014 British period film, Belle,
traces the life of Dido Elizabeth Belle,
daughter of an English aristocrat
and ex-slave in the 18th century.
Inspired by a portrait of Belle and
her cousin Lady Elizabeth Murray,
Anglo-Nigerian writer Misan Sagay’s
screenplay not only talks about the
issues of slavery, but the presence
of blacks in western art during this
period. The film is directed by Amma
Asante, a member of the British Film
Academy who is of Ghanian descent.
Take a broader view of the history of
African diaspora through this personal
story that eventually had a significant
impact on the status of slavery in
Britain. There will be a brief discussion
following the film.
