Tradition is the Preservation of the Fire. . .
In the 1970´s began the story of the successful square recorders by
Joachim Paetzold.
Herbert Paetzold takes on the idea, and for many decades would the
square bass recorders be in close connection with his discovery and
his creativity.
The worldwide expansion of the instrument received a special starting
impulse through the spontaneous decision of Frans Brüggen to
use basses in the Ensemble Sour Cream.
Many renowned players and ensembles such as Tom Beets, Blockflötenorchester
Dortmund, Johannes Fischer, Susanne Fröhlich, Sarah
Jeffery, Miako Klein, Flautando Köln, PLENUM, Tobias Reisige, Eva Reiter,
Nadja Schubert, Spark, QNG, Paul Leenhouts, Dietrich Schnabel,
Antonio Politano and countless others choose the quality of these
unique bass recorders since decades to use in concert and studio
recording settings.
Paetzold (by Kunath) bass recorders hold a life-long value. Sometimes
they will even become a bit more valuable over time. So that it
will stay this way in the future, we emphasize that all new developed
parts are compatible with existing basses.
This way, you can repeatedly enhance your older bass recorder as
desired with new accessories, or have a general overhaul to bring it
up-to-date.
Proof that all people who work daily on perfecting the bass recorders,
understand and live tradition in the sense of ‚ „Preservation of
the fire and not worshipping the ashes.‘‘
The underestimated material: Plywood
In musical instrument making, woodwind instrument making has probably the
highest requirements on the materials used.
Wood expands in contact with humidity. Some types of woods more so than
others, some less. There is not a naturally grown type of wood that can go
against the laws of nature, even when an instrument maker uses elaborate
technology for impregnation.
Over 100 years ago, a simple and effective method was invented from a German
business man, Heinrich H. Basse, which reduces nearly completely the dimensional
variation of the wood.
He glued together many thin
layers of wood under heat
and pressure at a 90° angle.
This way he neutralized the
varying swelling and shrinking
of the wood, making the
wood free of warping and
cracking. Plywood was born.
For our instruments, we use
carefully selected birch plywood,
which is specially cut
and glued.
Along with the lacquering,
we get instruments that set
standards in terms of reliability
and sound.
Quality only goes in one
direction.
3

The Special Material: Solid Wood
Despite the many advantages plywood instruments offer, some do not like
this material.
For those who do not want to miss the musical and exceptional ergonomic
benefits of the Paetzold by Kunath basses, we offer all instruments, except
the subcontrabass, in solid cherrywood.
Cherrywood has the advantage that the instruments with the density of
0.63g/cm³, do not become unbearably heavy. The surface of the cherrywood
gives the instrument a warmer and more sophisticated tone quality.
The used cherrywood is
purchased from specialized
wood dealers that
we have been cooperating
with for decades.
Of course we leave it up
to you, which material we
should build your bass
with.
No matter how you
decide, we guarantee you
unforgettable moments
when you first experience
the sight and sound of
your instrument.
4

Surface Finishing
We offer different finishings for your instrument.
You can choose from a wide selection of natural-looking wood surfaces up to
extravagant airbrushed designs, we can personalize your instrument according
to your wishes. The types of surfaces are shown at the end of the product
Thumb-Keys and Co.
What makes a bass to a Paetzold by Kunath?
In the last decades, new ideas have always been incorporated into the basic
design of the square basses, and are constantly improved.
Details that make music again and again a little more pleasant.
180° turn
Through a patented right (180°
bend), the bocal can be 9x shorter
as on comparable basses,
making the instrument respond
a lot quicker and more direct.
Automatic Thumb-Keys
You will be pleasantly surprised by
how comfortable and easy these
bass thumb-keys are to use. Why
should you renounce this comfort?
6

Self-Regulating Key Pads
Through the special positioning of
the pads, the keys can cover well for
a particularly longer time.
You will find out that a Paetzold
by Kunath is an extremely reliable
companion.
The ErgoKey-Key Mechanism
Have you ever had the pleasure to
hold a Paetzold by Kunath in your
hands?
Have you also wondered why
such a large instrument allows to
be played comfortably by smaller
hands? No? True convenience
means, there is no feeling that
something is missing.
7

Basset Recorder
The basset is so compact through
our patented design, that it is
sometimes mistaken for a tenor
recorder. When played, it quickly
convinces through its surprisingly
full and expressively warm sound
that is beyond reproach. Here is
a bass. Often this moment is the
basis for a long-lasting love at first
sound.
Although it has an inner bore of
33.5 inches, only a quarter of the
length of our largest instrument, it
has all the advantages of Kunath
bass recorders: the 180° bend, automatic
thumb key, self-regulating
key pads, and the ErgoKey-key
mechanism.
Especially in music school and ensemble
settings, the basset makes
it possible to be played by smaller
hands, making the learning curb
less complicated.
Accessories for the basset recorder
can be found starting on page 18.
Greatbass Recorder
An instrument that impresses
with its manageability and sound
diversity.
The instrument can be played easily
both sitting and standing with
the floor spike included.
The floor spike can be quickly
adjusted to a different size for another
player even during a concert.
The inner bore has a length of 46.5
inches. The 180° bend shortens the
instrument to a handy 43.3 inches
in height.
Of course, the greatbass uses the
useful-proven Paetzold by Kunath
features: 180° bend, automatic
thumb keys, self-regulating pads
and the ErgoKey-key mechanism.
Whether classical, jazz, or contemporary
music - the Paetzold by
Kunath greatbass is at home in all
styles.
The pictured “Black Nugget” is
decorated with gold leaf.
The stand is not included, but can
Contrabass Recorder
This model laid the foundation
for the worldwide success of the
square basses.
For Paetzold by Kunath, it does not
matter whether it is called a contrabass
or a subbass.
But one thing matters. It wants
to be produced with the greatest
possible precision. We grant this
wish. Confidently it plays out its
strength, either as a solo instrument
or in an ensemble.
The model has been optimized
again and again over the years to
set no limits to the rising demands
of professional players.
Many of the style-defining crafted
features such as the 180° bend, the
automatic thumb keys, the self-regulating
key-pads and the ErgoKey
key-mechanism have been developed
on the contrabass.
The instrument has a compact
overall height of about 60 inches,
but the length of the inner bore is
almost 69 inches. The stand shown
can be ordered separately as an
accessory (see page 18 ff).
Subgreatbass
Some instruments are surrounded
by a very special aura. Barely describable,
but immediately noticeable.
Sounding at an impressive length
of a 90.5 inches long inner bore, the
recorder is redefined.
The bocal, just under 7 inches long,
gives you full control over the little
airflow that you need to play clearly
with great ease a wide range from
light to heavy articulation.
With the 180° bend, the nearly
77 inches in height instrument is
remarkably handy. On concert tours
your sensational companion is even
allowed as carry-on luggage on the
airplane in the bag (optional).
And the fingering?
The ErgoKey key-mechanism
expresses how good an ergonomic
design at a high level can be worth
commemorating.
Subcontrabass
A subcontrabass opens endless
possibilities.
Although size at first glance is
not the only factor of quality, this
instrument immediately gives
the feeling, from when you play
the first tones, that the mission of
this bass recorder is to make your
dreams come true.
With the subcontrabass, a new era
in ensemble-playing has begun.
Soothing depth: sophistication and
confidence.
This sound carries over the magical
barrier between 100% and total
perfection.
From this moment on recorder
orchestras without the incomparable
presence of subcontrabasses
are indeed imaginable, but not
desirable.
The largest recorder of the world
sounds from an impressive length
of 141.75 inches (11‘9 ¾‘‘). With the
double180° bend, the total height
is reduced to a living room height
of 96.5 inches, or 8‘ 9 ½‘‘.
Range of 2 octaves (no low F#).
Directly Blown Head Joints
Paetzold (by Kunath) basses have
written over 40 years of music history.
Countless composers have written
special expression pieces directly on
the acoustic body of these instruments.
To further extend the musical possibilities
of the basses, we have developed
directly blown head joints which can
be used instead of the existing head
joints.
These headpieces are suitable for all
previously purchased basses.
In some cases small dimensional
adjustments to your bass may be necessary,
which we will carry out in our
workshop, free of charge.
Through the directly blown head joint
you receive completely new possibilities
of expression.
Experience the feeling when the unique ergonomics of our basses combine
themselves with the possibilities of a directly blown instrument - and again shift
musical boundaries. Just like 40 years ago.
Subcontrabass Stand
The instrument stands upright without
having to be held. You can completely
concentrate on making music. During the
breaks, the instrument stands securely
in place. You do not want to miss this
convenience once you came to enjoy that
the subcontrabass stand is watching your
instrument.
Strap Holders
Your wrists will be happy when they do not
have to work so hard. Of course you do not
have to do everything yourself. Delegate
simple work to helpers like the strap holder.
In conjunction with a conventional bass strap
holder it takes the weight of the bass away
from your hands. You can dedicate yourself to
playing expressively and carefree.
The strapholder is simply clamped onto the instrument.
Telescopic Support Spike
The telescopic support spike makes it possible for the bass to
be adjustable in height from the floor with infinite variability.
This way, you can decide if you want to stand up or sit while
playing. Disassembled for transportation, there is room in the
bag and hard case.
Bocals
In March 2011 the construction of
bocals was changed as part of a model
revision. The goal was to achieve
a long-term stable fit to the bocal for
the mouthpieces.
If you need to replace an old bocal, we
would like to ask you to please also
order a new matching mouthpiece.
Possibly also the drip cup should be replaced.
The long bocal may be used as needed even for contrabasses and subgreatbasses.
Sealing Gaskets
We developed a double sealing
gasket to go around each instrument
joint, so that they are
reliably sealed to one another
to avoid the problem that traditional
bass tenon joints have.
They consist of a particularly
high-quality foam, which we
tested for stability for over tens
of thousands of test cycles. The
result: Under normal conditions,
the seals will last for
many years, and thus longer
than the conventional cork connections of recorders. The seals can be mounted
to all existing Paetzold (by Kunath) basses in our workshop.
The bass is shown for illustration.
Please protect the double seals against pressure from the sides, for example
when inserting the instrument into the suitcase or bag. When storing the bass
always use the supplied gasket protectors.
Installation is included in the price.
