Violence of the Court
“The justice system responded to her assault with its own
measure of violence. In an act of complete and unprecedented
dehumanization, her sexual organs—human remains—were
brought into the court, covered in a paper towel. The court referred
to this portion of her body as a “specimen.” A portion of a woman’s
body, a sacred, life-giving, indigenous woman’s body was paraded
through the Canadian criminal court system. The very system that
dispossessed indigenous women from their land and that continues
to criminalize their lives at staggering and ever-increasing rates.”
