The program was affirmed with the 2006 Pennsylvania Staff Development Council Best Practices in Staff Development Award and further validated earlier this year with two $1,000 grants from the same organization. Throughout the year, teachers meet in small groups to analyze student performance data, strategize and compare notes as to what tactics get the best results in their classrooms. On May 17, CSD held a “Best Practices Fair” for teachers, where staff members presented seminars and demonstrations to their peers throughout the District. “This event is evidence of our commitment to collaboration and our Professional Learning Teams,” said Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment Dr. Elizabeth McKeaney. In a Socratic Seminar, students sit in concentric circles, where the inner circle discusses a text through open-ended questions, and the outer circle studies the discussion process. Gary Johnson has stepped down after 16 years as a member of the Colonial Board of School Directors, including four and a half years as vice president and the last three as president. He presided over his final Board meeting on November 17. “It has been my privilege to work with Gary Johnson for the past 10 years,” Board member Susan Moore said. “Gary cares deeply about the District, its students and its residents. He is never one to look for accolades or glory, only what is in the best interest of the District. “He is a very loyal, supportive and kind gentleman,” Moore continued. “Gary is one of the nicest people I know. His leadership will be missed.” Mr. Johnson was elected to the School Board for four-year terms in 1995, 1999, 2003 and 2007. He was named vice president in July 2004 and became president in January 2009. Mr. Johnson is a past chairperson of the Human Resources Committee, Facilities Management and Transportation Committee and the Community Relations and Student Life Committee. He served on the District’s Technology Review Committee and also served terms as president and treasurer of the Central Montco Technical High School Joint Operating Committee. A lifelong District resident, Mr. Johnson attended Ridge Park Elementary School and Plymouth Whitemarsh High School. He was active in the Ridge Park Parent Teacher Organization and the Colonial Parents Council prior to joining the School Board. Teachers share proven techniques at Best Practices Fair 15
Respected anti-bullying program now in place at CMS In September, Colonial Middle School (CMS) began its first full school year with the Olweus B.E.S.T. Program. Olweus (pronounced Ol-VEY-us; the E sounds like a long A) is a comprehensive, internationally recognized schoolwide program designed and evaluated for use in elementary, middle or junior high schools. B.E.S.T. stands for Bully Elimination School-wide Team. CMS teachers began training in October 2010, and the program was introduced to students last March. Through implementation of the program, the school is committed to help eliminate bullying in the building, on the buses and in the community. The first project of the year was an art contest in which all students were encouraged to create a banner that would display the positive climate-improvement efforts made in the school. The winning banner, created by sixth-grader Matt Bullock, incorporates three logos – the Patriot, No Place for Hate® and Olweus B.E.S.T. @ CMS. Banners were then made for each of the school’s grade-level teams. Students who made a commitment to eliminate bullying signed their team’s banner. The banners are displayed throughout the school. On an ongoing basis, all students meet in homerooms every other Wednesday and discuss topics like, “How do you stand up to a bully?” or “What do you do when you encounter a bullying situation?” These sessions provide a venue for teachers to share important skills and also give students the opportunity to express their personal opinions in a supportive environment. “Our goal is to empower students so that they know exactly how they should react in a bullying situation,” said teacher Mary Dicciani, who added that “feedback from students has been positive.” (See insert). 14 A key component of the plan is the consistent message imparted by administrators, teachers, paraprofessionals, cafeteria workers, aides and bus drivers whenever they encounter a bullying situation. The message is S.E.N.D., an acronym created by Dicciani and fellow teacher Amanda Day. S.E.N.D. stands for: Stop the situation Emphasize with the victim and Engage the bystander Name the Bullying Behavior and Deliver the message of consequences S.E.N.D. is used during “On-the-Spot-Interventions,” when an adult “I think the class meetings help us be more connected with each other.” 8th grade student “I have learned not to be a bystander, and I’ve tried to use these strategies outside the classroom.” 7th grade student “I like the B.E.S.T. @ CMS program, because it makes sense, and I can use it when I need to. We talked in class meetings about telling a teacher when we see bullying, and I did that.” 6th grade student present during the time of the incident intervenes with the student(s) showing the bullying behavior, the bystanders and the victim. The adult then gives the appropriate direction, which may include a yellow slip requiring the student(s) to visit with a school counselor. Counselors receive a portion of the yellow slip that details the inappropriate behavior. Counselors discuss the behavior with the student(s), share consequences for future acts, inform the students that their parents will be contacted and then call the parents. “The ‘On-the-Spot Interventions’ have become a vital tool for reporting incidences that show bullying behaviors,” Dicciani said. “Counselors are on-hand each day to speak with the bully and the victim, counseling both in the right ways to behave.
