FIRE SAFETY PROGRAM / SEMINARS<br />
<strong>Horse</strong> <strong>Racing</strong> <strong>Alberta</strong>’s Animal Welfare Committee<br />
sponsored a Fire Safety Seminar at Stampede Park on<br />
Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 14, 2004. Course instruction included use of a<br />
fire extinguisher, safety practices for <strong>the</strong> use and s<strong>to</strong>rage of<br />
combustibles, recognizing potential fire hazards and dealing<br />
with <strong>the</strong>m, fire smart practices and administering first aid<br />
<strong>to</strong> injured animals.<br />
The seminar was attended by 49 people. Thirty-eight<br />
participants completed <strong>the</strong> testing and received fire safety<br />
certificates. More courses are planned for 2005 and 2006.<br />
Proof of attending a Fire Safety Course will be a requirement<br />
for anyone re-applying <strong>to</strong> work on <strong>the</strong> backstretch<br />
commencing with <strong>the</strong> 2007 licensing year.<br />
<strong>Horse</strong> <strong>Racing</strong> <strong>Alberta</strong> also conducted o<strong>the</strong>r seminars<br />
on animal welfare issues in 2004, including Respira<strong>to</strong>ry<br />
Conditions that Affect <strong>Racing</strong> Performance; and Ethical<br />
Conundrums and Contradictions in <strong>the</strong> Equine World.<br />
