MUST DO
MOVE-IN
TASKS
Change the locks. Having new locks
and keys will ensure you and
your family are the only ones
who can enter your new home.
[ one
[ three
Locate the water
shutoofs. If you have
a plumbing emergency,
you'll want to know where
the main water shut-off
valve is and how to turn it off.
[
Locate main circuit
breaker. It's a good idea to
figure out which fuses control
what parts of your house and
label them accordingly.
Check the smoke detectors. Find all the smoke
detectors and test them all. If you don't feel the
home is adequately covered with them, install
some more as quickly as possible. Make sure
there's a fire extinguisher on every floor.
Get connected to your
new neighbourhood. Buy a
subscription to the local
newspaper or community
magazine or see if Welcome
Wagon operates in your area.
This will quickly get you up to
speed on what's happening
in your neighbourhood.
[
Check major appliances. If you
moved major appliances, such as
a stove, dishwasher, washer or
dryer, check to make sure all
appliances and electronics
are working to ensure nothing
was damaged during the move.
Pack a first night box. This is essential to a
successful move. It makes such a big
difference to the comfort of your first night
In your new home so you aren't frantically
searching through boxes at midnight trying to
find your toothbrush.
[ two
Reprogram the garage door opener. Again,
it’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes
to security. Most remotes have a reset button,
but if you need more instructions, contact the
manufacturer to walk you through the steps
for your make and model.
