• "The Last Night"
• You come to me with scars on your wrist
You tell me this will be the last night
Feeling like this
• I just came to say goodbye
Didn't want you to see me cry
I'm fine but I know it's a lie
• This is the last night you'll spend alone
Look me in the eyes so I know you know
I'm everywhere you want me to be
• The last night you'll spend alone
I'll wrap you in my arms and I won't let go
I'm everything you need me to be
BN News spoke with the lead singer of Skillet, John Cooper, about his
faith and career.
The Christian rock band, Skillet, is storming the music industry, topping Christian and
mainstream charts, but lead singer John Cooper emphasizes "it's always about Jesus."
"What I am most proud about Skillet is that we have never one time been embarrassed of our
Christian faith," he told CBN News. "I've never one time said, 'No, we're not a Christian
band,' and tried to dance around it."
When you go into these mainstream, secular rock stations, it's all about sex, drugs, rock and
roll," Cooper explained. "And they've got pictures up all over the place of terrible things, and
let's just be honest, a lot of half-nude -- it's the celebration of sex, and the celebration of
worldliness and debauchery."
"And you go in there... and they sit me down, and their first question is, 'I hear that Skillet's a
Christian band. Tell me that's not possibly true,'" he continued. "And what they want me to
do is they want me to be embarrassed, and they want me to dance around it."
"They want us to say, 'Well, we're not really a Christian band. It's really just about this or this
or this,'" he said. "And without fail, every single time I've looked them in the eye, and I've
said, 'Absolutely, we're a Christian band. We are not embarrassed about it at all.'"
Cooper says rock and roll is not about sex and drugs but about writing songs that reflect your
passions and not caring what other people think.
"What I'm most passionate about in my life is Jesus," he shared. "So I write songs for all kinds
of people. But it's always about Jesus. So I'm very proud of that. And as a part of my
legacy, I pray to God that I never become embarrassed of that."
Cooper told CBN News that he also wants Skillet to be remembered as a band that inspired
Christians to be bold in their faith, no matter where they find themselves in life, including
those in the music industry.
"We desperately need some of these young Christian musicians to remember that it's about
Jesus and about proclaiming Jesus and not be ashamed of him, so that's what I hope that
my legacy is," he explained.
Cooper believes God created music to be powerful, and the Lord uses the music of Skillet to
accomplish his will.
"Every time I take the stage, I believe God is using me as a warrior," he said. "We always do
like sports teams do before they go -- they have a chant; they do their chant. Skillet's chant
is always... that we are going into battle, that God is going to use us."
"So that's basically what I'm getting at is that my everyday life, my passion for Jesus is that...
he's in my marriage; he's in the way I raise my kids; he's in when I fight with my wife; he's in
the music that I create," Cooper continued. "He's in every moment that I go on stage 'cause
everytime you're on stage is a moment for God to use that music."
Skillet's lead singer told CBN News that God has opened doors for the band to minister to
cutters and those who battle suicidal thoughts and mental health struggles. Cutters are
people who cut their own flesh in response to emotional pain and suffering.
Cooper says Skillet's song, "The Last Night," is about cutting and a girl who wants to kill
herself, and how God reaches out to her and saves her.
• For many listeners, Till Lindemann is German hard rock. For over 20 years, Rammstein has
•
shaped their motherland’s musical landscape with their ferocious brand of pounding industrial
metal, and so much of the band’s appeal has been Lindemann’s chasmically deep voice singing in
authoritative German. But last year’s announcement that they would be taking time off from the
studio left fans wondering when they would next hear new material from Deutschland’s greatest
export. So when Lindemann announced he would be releasing a solo record, the horde rejoiced.
But the new Lindemann record, 'Skills in Pills,' is more than a Rammstein clone. The album is a
collaboration with Peter Tägtgren, frontman of Hypocrisy and Pain and producer of such underground
metal icons as Immortal and Dimmu Borgir. Driving, dramatic, and dripping with sexual
deviancy—song titles include “Golden Shower” and “Ladyboy”—'Skills' feels like a distillation of
the Till Lindemann way of life, expressing both filth and purity, strength and weakness. And while
it’s still full of the goose-step riffs, gothic choral moments, and bizarre erotic fantasies that
Rammstein fans love, the singer’s choice to trade in his signature harsh German for English will
no doubt give some headbangers pause.
• Speaking to Lindemann and Tägtgren is like trying to have a polite conversation with Dracula and
Dr. Frankenstein—one is all atmospheric baritone, describing music with colors and flavors; the
other is full of nuts-and-bolts enthusiasm, referencing bands and genres. Both of them laugh a lot,
and seem genuinely stoked to discuss the new record. When Revolver asks the singer why he
waited until 2015 to write a solo album, he seems unsatisfied with the term. “It’s not a solo album,”
he says. “It’s a side project.”
• REVOLVER It’s interesting to discern a solo album from a side project. That implies that
you wanted to create a new band entirely.
TILL LINDEMANN Really, me and Peter never thought about making a whole record—we just
started with a song, and then another song, and all of a sudden we found ourselves with seven
titles, and we decided to continue. And all of a sudden, a record was done.
PETER TÄGTGREN We’ve known each other for a long time, and we always knew we wanted to
do something together. Then in 2013, Till invited my family and I to a Rammstein show in Sweden,
and afterwards he said, ‘Now is the time to do it.’ We’d been talking since 2001 or 2002. Till had
done some vocals on my Pain project. So we figured we’d just write some songs together and put
them in the bucket, as we say. All of a sudden, we found ourselves sending MP3s between each
other. One thing lead to another.
• Till, did you ever worry how Rammstein fans would respond when they found out you were
doing something different, especially in English?
LINDEMANN At first, I didn’t like the English sound of my voice, and so it took some time getting
into it, because I never really did it before and wanted to experiment. But now I’ve become very
proud of the way it sounds. I wanted to use this language to represent English-speaking people.
Nobody speaks German outside of Germany. So I wanted to provide more access to my thoughts
and lyrics to the people in Chile and Russia and France or whatever. It’s a new horizon right now.
• That’s brave. Many of the fans, especially in America, love the guttural sounds of you
singing in German.
LINDEMANN Yes, but I think the whole aesthetic of the music is totally different. It’s more gothic,
filled with more melodies, and isn’t as harsh music as Rammstein. Rammstein’s music demands
German lyrics. But I feel that Peter and I found a great way to frame the English vocals. It’s a big
difference. Doing this with English, it was like a totally new garden was opened. In German, there
are only so many things you can write about. With English, I opened the gates and I entered the
garden, and I plucked my cherries. Everything was totally new
Castle Of Glass
Take me down to the river bend
Take me down to the fighting end
Wash the poison from off my skin
Show me how to be whole again
Fly me up on a silver wing
Past the black, where the sirens
sing
Warm me up in the novice glow
And drop me down to the dream
below
Because i'm only a crack in this
castle of glass
Hardly anything left for you to see
For you to see
Bring me home in a blinding dream,
Through the secrets that i have
seen
Wash the sorrow from off my skin
And show me how to be whole
again
"The idea that success equals happiness pisses me off. It’s funny to think that just because you’re
successful you’re now immune to the full range of the human experience. But we also realise that we’re not
kids any more, we’re not youngsters with this teen angst and this feeling of ‘why does the world piss me
off?’ and finding a way to express it. We have had a lot of success and there are a lot of great things going
on for us, but there are things that really matter to us. When we talk about lyrical content we can’t just go
back to being that angry kid, we need to talk about something that makes sense to who we are today. One
of the themes that works really well and stretches into different areas is ‘What’s worth fighting for?’ – you
can come up with a lot of different answers. Human rights, freedom, your creativity, your identity, finding
your voice, being oppressed – all these things happen around the world on a constant basis that we find
people struggling with, and we often struggle with as well. Those things do fill us with a lot of anger and we
want to make a change in the world and to get involved."
“I was on 11 hits of acid a day. I dropped so much acid I’m surprised I can still speak! I’d smoke a bunch of
crack, do a bit of meth and just sit there and freak out. Then I’d smoke opium to come down. I weighed 110
pounds. My mom said I looked like I stepped out of Auschwitz. So I used pot to get off drugs. Every time I’d
get a craving, I’d smoke my pot.”
“My tattoos all symbolise something. The flames on my arm represent the Aries part of my fire sign. My left
shoulder has a Piscean symbol and a Japanese Koi carp on my right. I have the album design on my left
calf muscle. My back piece is six arms spread out and was done by my friend, who said it was a visual
representation of how I reach out and grab the audience. I thought that was nice.”
“My dad – who is a retired police officer – loves Linkin Park and has always been supportive of me. I think
he loves it a little more than I do, actually. The reason why he’s always supported me is because this is
what I’ve always wanted to do. I’ve never backed down and I think he respects that. We’re not a cliched
rock band where everyone is messed up on drugs. We’re all decent people, so that makes me proud too.”
"What is difficult is making a record you think other people want.We make music that we want to hear then
we cross our fingers and hope everyone else likes it too. Obviously being a musician you want to make
music that connects with people, you want people to want to listen to it – that’s the goal. I don’t know any
artists that make music and don’t want people to hear their music. The focus has never been on what other
people think of us, it’s more about what’s going to satisfy us and what’s going to get us excited about
making a record. What’s exciting is making hard, heavy music that’s fun to play. And to challenge
ourselves technically. We put the challenge out to Brad Delson that 'would his 14-year-old self look at him
as a guitar player and think he’s awesome?' I don’t think so, considering Mike has been playing guitar on
the past few records. So we challenged him to go in there and have fun and show the world what a good
guitar player is. And we pushed every member of the band the same way.”
“Being in a band like Linkin Park comes with a lot of benefits because we get to see the world and meet
people. Even though we have sold millions of records we are literally a bunch of guys who have a cool job.
I don’t think I’m any different to who I was when I joined the band other than I’m older and have more
experience. I appreciate that people know me for my music and that’s why they like what I do. They don’t
know what I do outside of music and that’s intentional. I like going to the grocery store, I like going out in
public and hanging out being another dad at the baseball game, and that’s something we cherish – the
attention you want to get is the attention you do get.”
