Welcome to Wentworth Woodhouse
History of the House
Wentworth Woodhouse is a Grade I listed country house in South Yorkshire, with the longest
façade of any country house in England. It stands in 83 acres of gardens and grounds and has
extensive views over former parkland including a deer park and lakes which are vested in the
Fitzwilliam Wentworth Amenity Trust.
Wentworth Woodhouse was built for the 1st Marquess of Rockingham from c.1735, the work
continuing over four decades, and then passed to the Fitzwilliam family. During World War II
the mansion was taken over for use by Military Intelligence and after 1945 the onset of open
cast coalmining in the garden and park made it impossible for the family to return. The greater
part of the house was let in 1947 to West Riding County Council, on a long lease, shortly before
the death of the 8th Earl Fitzwilliam in a plane crash in 1948. The house was then used as a
Training College for PT teachers.
Following local government reorganisation in 1974 Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council
became the lessee and the property was taken over as a student campus for Sheffield Polytechnic
College (now Sheffield Hallam University). Faced with mounting costs Rotherham paid to
surrender the lease in 1988. The house and 83 acres of grounds and parkland were sold to W.G.
Haydon-Baillie in 1989. In 1995 Haydon-Baillie charged the property to Bank Julius Baer (BJB)
which took possession in 1998.
The property was bought by the Newbold family in 1999 who continued to reside in the house
until the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust bought the house for just over £7 million
in March 2017.

Weddings at Wentworth Woodhouse
Congratulations on your engagement. We are delighted that you may be considering
Wenworth Woodhouse to celebrate your special day. Wentworth Woodhouse boasts a
Civil Ceremonies/Partnerships
We are happy to discuss your civil ceremony/partnership requirements, once you have
decided on your wedding date. A civil ceremony may only be conducted by the Registrar or
Deputy Registrar for the district in which it is to take place.
The local Registrar for the Wentworth area is based in Rotherham and can be contacted by
telephone on 01709 823542.
N.B. You will be responsible for the fee to allow the Registrar to attend Wentworth
Woodhouse.
All of the following rooms are licenced for civil ceremonies.
Whistlejacket
Originally planned as the dining room this beautiful
room is 40ft square.
The ceiling and walls are of stucco work and are
therefore heavily gilded. The room is home to the Stubbs
portrait of Whistlejacket which can be seen on the north
wall.
Whistlejacket was the celebrated racehorse belonging to
the 2nd Marquess of Rockingham.
This room was furnished by the 4th Earl with
a suite of 2 sofa’s & 12 armchairs supplied by
Gillows of Lancaster in 1832.
The 4 gilt metal electric lights are from the
early 20th Century.

Painted Drawing Room
The paintings in this room are on canvas stretched on frames and depict “the five senses”,
many of these paintings are original works by either Jean Francois Clermont or Andien de
Clermont. The remainder of the paintings may be relelatively modern in comparison.
The small picture over the mantelpiece is of Charles,
Lord Higham (later 2nd Marquess of Rockingham),
and his sister Lady Charlotte Watson-Wentworth.
The large picture is of the 1st Marquess of Rocingham
and his wife, Lady Mary Finch
Marble Saloon
The Marble Saloon is a vast hall measuring 60ft square and 40 ft high.
A Gallery runs around the whole room. The Gallery is supported by 18 iconic fluted pillars in
scagliola; the shafts are sienna, the bases, pedestals, and capitals are white marble with the
square bases being of verd antique.
Over the niches are relivos in panels from the design of James Stuart.
Above the Gallery are 18 Corinthian pilasters of scagliola. The Chimney piece, equally
classic, is later in date and is the work of John Gibson - possibly from 1847.
The ceiling plasterwork by Jonathan and Joseph Rose is reflected in the design on the marble
floor. Religious ideology of the time said that only God was perfect and, consequently, there
is a deliberate mistake constructed in the floor design.
Lower Drawing Room
The Whilst this room has recently been decorated by the BBC and had bookcases installed, at
some point in the future it will be returned to it’s original appearance.
An attractive feature of this room is the skill of the carving of the mantelpiece and the two
corner niches, which closely resemmbles the work of Grinling Gibbons.
The picture is of Lady Anne Watson-Wentworth who married the 3rd Earl Fitzwilliam.
The Pillared Hall
Although guests of note would arrive at the
principal and most important room in
Wentworth Woodhouse (the Marble Saloon),
the usual and more frequently used route to the
house was via the Pillard Hall .
The Pillared Hall
This Palladian space with it’s rows of plain
Tuscan columns supports the floor of the
Saloon above.
The basic and unadorned space remains the
backdrop for a series of Neoclassical statues.
