Alex C.K. HSIEH (-1985)<br />

aged 31 in 1998.<br />

Alex went from Haberdashers to Queen’s College, Cambridge to read Mathematics. He was<br />

an excellent scholar and was ranked in the top five of the Part II Mathematical Tripos list. He<br />

was also a keen and natural bridge player, competing at national level for both school and<br />

university. He went on to take a masters degrees in theoretical physics and computer<br />

science at Stanford University, where he also became a committed Christian. While working<br />

for Oracle as a software engineer, he was diagnosed as having Hodgkin's Lymphoma which,<br />

sadly, led to his untimely death.<br />

1982<br />

Robert C MARTIN (1980-82) was tragically killed, in July 1986, whilst climbing in the Cuillin<br />

Hills on the Isle of Skye. As with all who have ventured in to the mountains, Robert had not<br />

only a great love and appreciation of their grandeur, but also a deep regard for their dangers.<br />

It seems bitterly ironic that such a tragic accident should have happened to a gifted and<br />

safety conscious mountaineer as Robert undoubtedly was.<br />

Robert attended the School for the two years of his sixth form education. In his short time, he<br />

achieved both academic and sporting success, becoming a prefect and representing the<br />

School at cross-country and athletics. At home, he was a member of the Harpenden Venture<br />

Scouts group, being its Chairman for a time. After leaving, Robert gained a degree from<br />

Goldsmith's College of London University, where he was president of the mountaineering<br />

club during his second year. Joining BP in Aberdeen, as a geologist, Robert was following in<br />

his father's footsteps, since the latter had been with the company over 30 years.<br />

1981<br />

James R. F. KENT (1976-1981)<br />

died on 7 September 1985, nine weeks before his 21st birthday.<br />

James was the son of John (1947-55) and Muriel Kent.<br />

In his five years in the Boarding House, James made a useful contribution to the life of the<br />

School. His sports were in particular swimming and javelin-throwing, but he was also a
